The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag are
not designed to deploy in situations where
they cannot provide protection to the occu-
pants.
Some typical situations are shown in the
illustrations.
Because the front airbags and driver’s knee
airbag do not protect the occupants in all
types of collisions, be sure to always wear
your seat belts properly. The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag
may deploy if the underside of the vehicle
suffers a moderate to severe impact (under-carriage impact). Some typical situations are
shown in the illustrations.
Because the front airbags and driver’s knee
airbag may deploy in certain types of unex-
pected impacts, as shown in the illustrations,
and these unexpected impacts can move you
out of position, it is important to always wear
your seat belts properly. When worn properly,
seat belts can help maintain your distance
from the airbags and driver’s knee airbag
when they begin to inflate. The beginning
stage of airbag inflation is the most forceful
and can cause serious injury or death if you
are close to the deploying airbag. The front airbags and driver’s

The side airbags (A) are contained in the driver and front passenger seatbacks. The side airbag is designed to inflate only on the side of the vehicle that is impacted, even with no passenger in the front seat.
A label is attached to the seatbacks in vehi- cles with side airbags.

The curtain airbags are contained in the frontand rear pillars and roof side rail. The curtain airbag is designed to inflate only on the side of the vehicle that is impacted, even with nopassenger in the front seat.
Do not place objects, such as packages or pets, between the airbags and the driver or the front passenger. Such objects can adversely affect airbag performance, or cause serious injury or death when theairbag deploys. Immediately after airbag inflation, some parts of the airbag system will be hot. Do not touch them. You could be burned. The airbag system is designed to work only once. After the airbags deploy, they will not work again. They must promptlybe replaced and the entire airbag system must be inspected by an authorized Mit- subishi Motors dealer.WA R N I N G

WA R N I N G The side airbag and curtain airbag can cause serious injury or death to anyone too close to the airbag when it deploys. To reduce the risk of injury from a deployingside airbag and curtain airbags, all occu- pants must be properly restrained and seated well back, upright, and in the mid-dle of the seat. Do not lean against the door.
WA R N I N G In order to reduce the risk of injury from a deploying side airbag, do not allow any rear seat passengers to hold onto the back of either front seat. Special care should be taken with children. Do not place any objects near or around the front of either front seatback. Suchobjects can interfere with proper side air- bag deployment and cause injury during deployment of the side airbag. Do not place stickers, labels or additional trim on the back of either front seat. Theycan interfere with proper side airbag deployment. Do not install seat covers or re-cover seats that have side airbags. Covers can inter- fere with proper side airbag deploymentand adversely affect side airbag perfor- mance. Do not attach a microphone (A) or any other object around the part where the curtain airbag (B) deploys, such as on thewindshield, side door glass or front and rear pillars and roof side rail. When the curtain airbag inflate, the microphone orother object may be hurled with great force or the curtain airbag may not inflate correctly, resulting in death or serious injury.
WA R N I N G Do not put a hanger or any heavy or pointed object on the coat hook. If the cur- tain airbag was activated, any such item could be propelled away with great forceand could prevent the curtain airbag from inflating correctly. Hang clothes directly on the coat hook (without using a hanger).Make sure there are no heavy or sharp objects in the pockets of clothes that you hang on the coat hook. Never install a rear-facing child restraint system in the front passenger seat. Rear-facing child restraint systems MUST ONLY be used in the rear seat.

SRS servicing
WA R N I N G Any maintenance performed on or near the components of the SRS should be per- formed only by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Do not permit anyone elseto do any service, inspection, maintenance or repair on any SRS components or wir- ing. Similarly, no part of the SRS shouldever be handled, removed or disposed by anyone except an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.Improper work methods on the SRS com- ponents or wiring could result in an acci- dental airbag deployment or could makethe SRS inoperable. Either of these situa- tions could result in serious injury or death. Do not modify your steering wheel or any other SRS component or related vehiclepart. For example, replacement of the steering wheel, or modifications to the front bumper or body structure canadversely affect SRS performance and may lead to injury. If your vehicle has received any damage, you should have the SRS inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer to make sure it is in proper working order.
Do not modify your front seats, center pil- lar or center console. Such modifications can adversely affect SRS performance and may lead to injury. Also, if you discover any tear or openseam in the seat fabric near the side air- bag, have the seat inspected by an autho- rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. If you find a crack in or damage to the front pillar, rear pillar, or roof side railwhere the curtain airbag is located, have the SRS inspected by an authorized Mit- subishi Motors dealer.NOTE
When you transfer ownership of the vehicle to another person, we urge you to alert the new owner that it is equipped with the SRS and refer that owner to the applicable sec-tions in this owner’s manual. If you decide to junk or scrap your vehicle, we urge you to first take
it to an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer so that the SRS can be made safe for disposal. If any of the following parts needs to be modified for use by a handicapped person, the advanced airbag system will be greatly affected. Wind buffeting can be described as the per-
ception of pressure on the ears or a booming
or rumbling sound. Your vehicle may exhibit
wind buffeting when driving with one or both
rear door windows down or partially opened.
This is a normal occurrence that can be mini-
mized. If the buffeting occurs with the reardoor windows open, open the front door win-
dows as well as the rear door windows to
minimize the condition.

The sunroof can be opened and closed with
the ignition switch in the “ON” position.
Press the switch (1), the sunroof automati-
cally opens and the sunroof will stop several
centimeters this side of
the full open position.
Press the switch (1) again, and the sunroof
will be fully open.
To stop the moving sunroo f, press the switch.

WA R N I N G Before driving with a child in the vehicle,
be sure to lock the window switch to make
it inoperative. Children tampering with
the switch could easily trap their hands or
heads in the window. What to do if you hear wind
buffeting when driving
Sunroof
(if so equipped)
WA R N I N GDo not stick your head, hands or anything
else in the sunroof opening. Before operating the sunroof, make sure
that nothing can be trapped (head, hands,
fingers, etc.).Never leave a child (or other person who is
incapable of safely operating the sunroof
switch) alone in the vehicle.

NOTE
The sunroof stops just before reaching the
fully open position. If the vehicle is driven
with the sunroof in this position, wind buf-
feting is lower than with the sunroof fully
open.

NOTE
The safety mechanism can be activated if the driving conditions or other circumstances cause the sunroof to be subjected to a physi-cal shock similar to that caused by a trapped hand or head.WA R N I N G The safety mechanism is deactivated while the switch (2) is pressed continuously. Therefore be especially careful that handsor head are not trapped in the sunroof opening.
Do not deliberately trap your hands or head in order to activate the safety mecha- nism. Personal injury and malfunction of the sunroof could result.CAUTION The safety mechanism is deactivated just before the sunroof closes. This allows the sunroof to close completely. Therefore be especially careful that fingers are not trappedin the sunroof opening.NOTE
When leaving the vehicle unattended, be sure to close the sunr
oof and if a key was
used to start the engine, remove the key from the ignition switch. Do not try to operate the sunroof if it is fro- zen closed (after snowfall or during extreme cold).
