must be between the
limits shown on the outside of the battery. Fillit with distilled water as needed. The inside of the battery is divided into several compart- ments. Take the cap off of each compartmentand fill to the mark. Do not fill above the top line because a spill during driving could cause damage.

The battery is weaker in cold temperatures. This has to do with its chemical and physical properties and is why a very cold battery,especially one with a lo
w charge, will have a
hard time starting your vehicle. It is recommended that you have your batteryand charging system checked by an autho- rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice before the start of coldweather. If necessary, have it charged. This will provide more relia
ble starting, and longer
battery life.

To disconnect the battery cable, stop theengine. Disconnect the
negative (-) terminal
first, then the positive (+) terminal. To recon- nect the battery, first
connect the positive (+)
terminal and then the negative (-) terminal,before starting the vehicle.
Checking battery electrolyte level
WA R N I N G If the battery goes flat, be sure to check the battery electrolyte level before con- necting booster cables. After checking the battery electrolyte level, make sure the caps are fittedsecurely.
 If any of the caps has a loose fit, replace the battery.
During cold weather Disconnection and connection

 Open the terminal cover (A) before discon- necting or connecting the positive (+) termi-nal of the battery.  Loosen the nut (B) and then disconnect the battery cable from the positive (+) terminal.WA R N I N G Never disconnect the battery while the engine is running,
or you could damage
the vehicle’s electrical parts. Never short-circuit the battery. This could cause it to overhea
t and be damaged.
Keep sparks, cigarettes, and flames away from the battery because the battery couldexplode. Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro- sive diluted sulfuric acid. If it spills on nearby parts, it can crack, stain, or dis- color them. And if it
gets on your skin or
in your eyes, it can cause burns or blind- ness. Please observe the following han- dling instructions:

It is a good idea to carry a shovel or a short- handled spade in the vehicle during the win- ter so that you can clear away snow if you getstranded. A small hand-brush for sweeping

Salt and other chemical
s spread on winter
roads in some geographical areas can have a detrimental effect on the vehicle underbody.You should flush the underbody with a high pressure hose every time you wash the out- side of your vehicle.Take special care to remove mud or other debris which could trap and hold salt and moisture. After washing your vehicle, wipe off all waterdrops from the rubber parts around thedoors to prevent the doors from freezing.

Wax your vehicle once or twice a year, orwhen water does not
bead up on the paint.
Use a soft cloth to put a small amount of wax on the painted surfaces.
After the wax has
dried, polish with
a dry soft cloth.
Do not wax your vehicle in direct sunlight. You should wax when the painted surfacesare cool.

do the following when using such equip-ment:• Keep the washing nozzle at least 28 inches(70 cm) away from the vehicle body.• When washing around the door glass, holdthe nozzle at a distance of more than 28 inches (70 cm) and at a right angle to the glass surface.
 Make sure to do the following when using an automatic car wash, with help from eitherthis manual or the car wash operator, to avoid damaging your vehicle:• Fold the outside
rearview mirrors.
• Remove the antenna.
During cold weather
NOTE
When the door is frozen, opening it by force may tear off or crack the rubber gasket installed around the door. Pour warm water to melt the ice. Be
sure to thoroughly wipe
off the water after opening the door. To pre- vent freezing of the
weatherstripping on the
doors, hood, etc., treat
with silicone lubri-
cant.
Waxing
CAUTION Waxes containing high abrasive compounds should not be used. Th
ese waxes remove rust
and stain effectively fr
om the paintwork, but
are harmful to the finish of the paint, because they also remove
paint/clearcoat.
They are also harmful to other glossy sur- faces such as the grille, trim, moldings, etc. Do not use gasoline, benzine, kerosene or paint thinners to remove
road tar or other dirt
from the vehicle surface. Do not put wax on the areas having black matte coating because
it can cause uneven
discoloration, patches, bl
urs, etc. If these get
wax on them, wipe the wax off right away with a soft clot
h and warm water.
