If your vehicle breaks down on the road, move to the shoulder and turn on the hazard warning flashers. If there is no shoulder, orthe shoulder is not safe, drive in the right lane slowly with the haza
rd lights flashing until
you come to a safe stopping place. Keep theflashers flashing. If the engine stops, there will be no power assist to the steering and brakes, making these difficult to use.  The brake booster will not work, so the brakes will not grip well. The brake pedal will be harder to press than usual.  Since there is no power steering assist, the steering wheel will be hard to turn.
Get help from your passengers, bystanders, etc. to push the vehicle
and move it to a safe
area.

3. You could be injured if the vehicles move. Set the parking brake firmly on each vehi- cle. Put an automatic transaxle or CVT in “P” (PARK) or a manual transaxle in “N”(Neutral). 4. Turn the ignition switch to the “OFF”OFF. 5. Make sure your battery electrolyte is at the proper level. (Refer to “Battery” on page 9-10.)

Jump-starting the engine

6. Connect one end of one jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the dis- charged battery (A),
and then connect the
other end to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery (B).
7. Connect one end of the other jumper cable
to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery (B), and then connect the other end to the designated ground location of the vehicle with the dischargedbattery (A) at the point farthest from the battery.
8. Start the engine in the vehicle providing the boost. Let the engine idle a few min-utes, then start the engine in the vehicle with the discharged battery. 9. After the engine is
started, disconnect the
cables in the reverse order from the way you connected them.

If you drive your vehicle with a low battery charge after the engine has been started byusing jumper cables, the engine may misfire. This can cause the an
ti-lock braking system
warning light to blink on and off. This is onlydue to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brak
e system. If this hap-
pens, fully charge the battery and ensure thecharging system is operating properly.

If the high coolant temperature warning lightilluminates while the engine is running, the engine may be overheating. If this happens: 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers.2. With the engine st
ill running, carefully
raise the engine hood to vent the engine compartment.
3. Check that the cooling fan is running. If the fan is not turning, stop the engineimmediately and contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice for assistance. 4. If you see steam or spray coming from under the hood, turn off the engine. 5. If you do not see stea
m or spray coming
from under the hood, leave the engine onuntil the high coolant temperature warn- ing light goes off. After the high coolant temperature warning light has gone off,you can start driving again. If the high coolant temperature warning light stays on, turn off the engine.
6. When you do not see any more steam or spray, open the hood. Look for obviousleaks, such as a split radiator hose. Be careful as components will be hot. Any leak source must be repaired.7. If there is no obvious leak source, check the coolant level in the engine coolant reserve tank. If there is none, or if it is toolow, slowly add coolant. 8. If the engine coolant reserve tank needs coolant, you will probably also need to add coolant to the radiator. Do not loosen or remove the radiator cap until the enginehas cooled down. 9. Start the engine, and slowly add coolant, up to the bottom of the filler neck. Use plain water if you have to (and replace itwith the right coolant as soon as possible).
 Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working near the battery. Keep the battery out of the reach of chil- dren.

Turn it slowly counterclock- wise, without pressing down, to the firstnotch. The pressure in the system will then be let out. When the pressure is COM- PLETELY LET OUT, press down andkeep turning the cap counterclockwise until it comes off.

WA R N I N G When checking or servicing the inside of the engine compartment, be sure the engine is stopped and has had a chance tocool down. If you need to work in the engine compart- ment with the engine running, be espe- cially careful that you
r clothing, hair, etc.

 After performing the maintenance work, make sure that no tools or cloths are leftbehind in the engine compartment.If they are left behind, a fire or damage to the vehicle may occur. The fan can turn on automatically even if the engine is not running. Turn the igni- tion switch to the “OFF” position or putthe operation mode in OFF to be safe while you work in
the engine compart-
ment. Do not smoke or allow open flames around fuel or the battery. The fumes are flamma-ble. Be extremely careful when working around the battery. It

and corrosive sulfuric acid. Do not get under your ve

The catalytic converter requires you to use unleaded fuel only. Leaded gasoline willdestroy the emission-control effectiveness of the converter. Normally, the
catalytic converter does not
require maintenance. Ho
wever, it is important
to keep the engine properly tuned for the con- verter to continue to work properly.
To reduce the possibili
ty of catalytic con-
verter damage:  Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY of the type of recommended in the “Fuel selection”.  Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of gas could damage the catalytic converter.  Do not try to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. If the battery is weak or run down, use jumper cables to properly start the engine. Do not idle the engine with any spark plug wires disconnected or
removed, such as
when performing diagnostic tests. Do not idle the engine for a long time if it is idling roughly or otherwise obviously malfunctioning. To prevent the catalytic converter from being damaged from unburned gas, do not race the engine when stopping the engine.

Unlatch the prop from the engine hood and put it back in its retainer. Slowly lower the engi
ne hood approximately
8 inches (20 cm), then let it drop from its own weight.

It is normal for an engi
ne to use oil. You may
need to add oil betwee
n the recommended oil
change intervals. Before starting the engine,check the engine oil level. Refill if necessary. To check the oil level, remove the dipstick, wipe it off, and gently
reinsert it all the way.
Slowly pull the dipsti
ck straight out and
check the oil level by checking the upper sur- face of the dipstick. Th
e oil level must not go
above the line on the dipstick. If the level does not reach the line which shows the minimum amo
unt of oil required,
remove the oil filler cap on the engine valve cover, and fill to within the “Good” range.
To close
CAUTION Be careful not to trap your hands or fingers when closing the engine hood. Make sure the engine hood is firmly closed before driving.If you drive without the engine hood com- pletely closed, it c
ould open up while driv-
ing.
NOTE
 If this does not clos
e the engine hood prop-
erly, drop it again from a slightly higherposition.  Do not push down strongly on the engine hood. Depending on how strongly or whereyou push down, you could create a dent in the vehicle body.

Check the washer fluid
level at regular inter-
vals and add washer fluid to reservoir if nec-essary. Open the reservoir cap and check the level of washer fluid.Full level is approximately 2 inches (5 cm) When freezing weather is anticipated, flush out the water in the reservoir by operating the pump. Fill the reservoir with windshield anti-freeze (not radiator an
tifreeze), and operate
the system for a few seconds to flush out the residual water.

The fluid level must be between the “MAX” The fluid level falls slightly with wear of the brake pads, but this
does not indicate any
abnormality. The fluid in the master cylinder should be checked when doing other work under the engine hood. The brake system should also bechecked for leaks at the same time. If the fluid level falls
noticeably in a short
length of time, it indi
cates leaks from the
brake system.
If this occurs, have the vehicle checked by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice. Use the brake fluid conforming to DOT 3 or DOT 4. The reservoir cap must be tightly sealed to keep dirt and water out.

The electrolyte level
must be between the
limits shown on the outside of the battery. Fillit with distilled water as needed. The inside of the battery is divided into several compart- ments. Take the cap off of each compartmentand fill to the mark. Do not fill above the top line because a spill during driving could cause damage.

The battery is weaker in cold temperatures. This has to do with its chemical and physical properties and is why a very cold battery,especially one with a lo
w charge, will have a
hard time starting your vehicle. It is recommended that you have your batteryand charging system checked by an autho- rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice before the start of coldweather. If necessary, have it charged. This will provide more relia
ble starting, and longer
battery life.

Checking battery electrolyte level

 If any of the caps has a loose fit, replace the battery.

Keep sparks, cigarettes, and flames away from the battery because the battery couldexplode. Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro- sive diluted sulfuric acid. If it spills on nearby parts, it can crack, stain, or dis- color them. And if it
gets on your skin or
in your eyes, it can cause burns or blind- ness. Please observe the following han- dling instructions:

It is important to fami
liarize yourself with the
following terms:
 Cold tire pressure: • The measured pressure after the vehiclehas been parked for
at least three hours,
or • The measured pressure when the vehicleis driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) after having been parked for three hours.
 Maximum pressure: the maximum per- missible cold tire inflation pressure for this tire.  Recommended inflation pressure: the inflation pressure for optimum tire perfor- mance. Intended outboard sidewall: • The sidewall that
contains a whitewall,
bears white lettering or bears manufac-turer, brand, and/or model name molding that is higher or deeper than the same molding on the other sidewall of the tire,or • The outward facing sidewall of an asym- metrical tire that has a particular sidethat must always face outward when mounted on a vehicle.
 Passenger car tire: a tire intended for use on passenger cars,
multipurpose passen-
ger vehicles, and trucks
that have a gross
vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,000pounds or less.
• If electrolyte gets on plastic parts or other nearby parts, wipe it off with a softcloth or chamois soak
ed in a solution of
water and neutral detergent then imme- diately rinse the affected parts with plenty of water.• If electrolyte gets on your hands orclothes, rinse thoroughly with water. Ifelectrolyte gets in
your eyes, flush them
with water immediately and get immedi- ate medical attention.
 Open doors and wind
ows in any closed
space where you may be charging orworking with the battery. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working with the battery, or have a skilled automobi
le technician do it.
If you are quick-charging your battery, first disconnect the battery cables. In order to prevent a
short-circuit, be sure
to disconnect the negative (-) terminal first, and reconnect it last. Battery posts, terminals and related acces- sories contain lead
and lead compounds.
Wash hands after handling.NOTE
 Check each battery terminal for corrosion. You can stop more corrosion by washingwith a solution of baking soda and water. Grease the posts and cl
amps after cleaning or
tightening them.WA R N I N G
 Check to see that the battery is securely installed and cannot be
moved. Also check
each terminal for tightness.  If you will not be driv
ing your vehicle for a
long period of time, re
move the battery and
store it in a place where the battery fluid will not freeze. The batter
y only should be stored
with a full charge.  Before cleaning the ba
ttery, tighten all the
filler port caps to keep
dirt and moisture out.
Tires

ated is dangerous.
These type tire conditions will adverselyaffect vehicle performance. These type tire conditions can also cause a tread separation or blowout which mayresult in an accident causing serious injury or death. Tires, including spar
e tire, degrade over
time with age even when they are not being used. It is recommended that tires over 6 yearsgenerally be replaced
even if damage is
