The indicator light on the engine switch illu- minates orange. All electrical accessories can be used. The indicator light on the engine switch illu- minates green. The indicator light turns off when the engineis running.

If you press the engine
switch without press-
ing the brake pedal {continuously variable transmission (CVT)} or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle) while the vehicle is sta-tionary, you can change the operation mode in the order of OFF, ACC, ON, OFF.

When the vehicle is
in ACC operation mode
for approximately 30 minutes, the ACCpower auto-cutout fu
nction automatically
cuts power to the audio system and other electronic devices that
can be used during
ACC operation mode. To enable power after ACC power auto-cut- out function, press the
engine switch while in
ACC.

 Your vehicle is equippe
d with an electronic
immobilizer. To start
the engine, the ID code
which the F.A.S.T.-key sends must match the one registered to the immobilizer computer. (Refer to “Electronic

Changing the operation mode

CAUTION When the engine is not running, put the oper- ation mode in OFF. Leaving the operationmode in ON or ACC for a long time when the engine is not running may cause the bat- tery to be discharged, making it impossibleto start the engine.  When the battery is disconnected, the current operation mode is memo
rized. After recon-
necting the battery, the memorized mode is selected automaticall
y. Before disconnect-
ing the battery for re
pair or replacement,
make sure to put the operation mode in OFF. Be careful if you are not sure which opera-tion mode the vehicle is in when the battery is run down. The operation mode cannot be changed from OFF to ACC or ON if the F.A.S.T.-key is not detected to be in the
vehicle. Refer to “Oper-
ating range for star
ting the engine and
changing the operation mode” on page 5-11.
NOTE
 If the operation mode cannot be changed to OFF, perform the following procedure. 1. Move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position, and then change the operation mode to OFF. (for vehicleswith continuously variable transmission (CVT)) 2. One of the other causes could be low bat- tery voltage. If this
occurs, the keyless
entry system and the F.A.S.T.-key opera-tion will also not
operate. Contact an

Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel in
jection system. This is
a system that automatically controls fuelinjection. There is usually no need to depress the accelerator pedal when starting the engine.To prevent battery drai
n, wait a few seconds
between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened.2. Make sure the parking brake is applied. 3. Press and hold the brake pedal down firmly with your right foot.
4. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the way down (manual transaxle). 5. On vehicles equippe
d with manual trans-
axle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position.On vehicles equipped with continuously variable transmission (CVT), make sure the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK)position.
6. Press the engine switch. 7. Confirm that all wa
rning lights and warn-
ing displays are functioning properly.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditio
ning blower and rear
window defogger, are turned off.

to move your vehicle out of the area. Car-bon monoxide gas, whic
h is odorless and
extremely poisonous, could build up and cause serious injury or death.CAUTION Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine at high rpms or drive at high speeds until th
e engine has had a
chance to warm up.
Starting the engine

NOTE
 After the engine has not
started for a while,
the brake pedal effort needed to start theengine may become grea
ter. If this occurs,
depress the brake pedal more firmly than usual.NOTE
 For vehicles equipped with a manual trans- axle, the engine will
not start unless the
clutch pedal is fully
depressed (Clutch inter-
lock). This is a safety feature.
NOTE
 On vehicles equippe
d with continuously
variable transmission (C
VT), the engine can
only be started when th
e selector lever is in
the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) posi- tion. For safety reasons, the engine should bestarted when the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position in which the driving wheels lock.NOTE

When parking on a hill, set the parking brake, and turn the front wheels toward the curb on a downhill, or away from the curb on an uphill.
Parking brake
To apply 1- Pull the lever up without pushing the
button at the end of hand grip. When the parking brake is set and theignition switch or the operation mode is in the “ON” position, the brake warn- ing light in the instrument cluster willcome on. Before driving, be sure to release the parking brake.
To deactivate 1- Pull the lever up slightly.2- Press and hold the button at the end of
the hand grip.
3- Push the lever downward.

clear view to the rear of the vehicle. Adjust the inside mirror to maximize the view through the rear window.
CAUTION Before driving, be sure that the parking brake is fully released and brake warninglight is off.If you drive without the parking brake fully released, the warning lamp will illuminate and a buzzer sounds when the vehicle speedexceeds 5 mph (8 km/h). If a vehicle is driven without releasing the parking brake, the brakes will be overheated,resulting in ineffectiv

3. If the engine still wi
ll not start, the engine
could be flooded with too much gasoline.While depressing the brake pedal (CVT) or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle), push the accelerator pedal all the waydown and hold it there, then crank the engine for 5 to 6 seconds. Return the igni- tion switch to the “OFF” position andrelease the accelerator pedal. Wait a few seconds, and then crank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds while depressing the brake pedal (CVT) or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle), but do not push theaccelerator pedal.
Release the ignition
switch if the engine starts. If the engine fails to start, repeat these procedures. Ifthe engine still will
not start, contact your
local Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choi
ce for assistance.
When the ambient temperature is -4 °F (-20 °C) or lower, it may not be possible to start from a standstill even with the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or “R” (REVERSE)position. This phenomenon occurs because the trans- axle has not warmed up sufficiently; it does

To gain extra acceleration in “D” (DRIVE) position (when passing an
other vehicle) push
the accelerator to the floor. The CVT will automatically downshift.
For short waiting periods, such as at traffic lights, the vehicle can be
left in selector lever
position and held stationary with the servicebrake. For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place th
e selector lever in the “N”
(NEUTRAL) position and apply the parking brake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the service brake. Prior to moving off after having stopped the vehicle, make sure that the selector lever is in“D” (DRIVE) position. To park the vehicle, fi
rst bring it to a com-
plete stop, fully engage the parking brake,
and then move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position. If the CVT does not shift while driving, or your vehicle does not pick up enough speed when starting on an uphill slope, it may bethat there is something unusual happening in the transmission. Have your vehicle checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice immediately.

Overuse of the brake can cause weakening,resulting in poor brake response and prema- ture wear of the brake pads.When driving down a long or steep hill, use engine braking by moving
the selector lever
to “Ds” (DOWNSHIFT & SPORTY DRIV-ING) or “L” (LOW) position.
 Use the selector lever in the correct shift position in accordance
with driving condi-
tions.Never coast downhill backward in the driv- ing shift position “D” (DRIVE), “Ds” (DOWNSHIFT & SPORTY DRIVING), “L”(LOW) or coast forward in the “R” (REVERSE) position. Engine stopping and in
creased brake pedal
and steering effort could
lead to an accident.
Do not rev the engine

This can damage the CVT. Also, when you depress
the accelera
tor pedal
while holding down the brake pedal with the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) position, the engine revolutions
may not rise as high
as when performing the same operation with the selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position.

CAUTION To avoid transmission overheating, never try to keep your vehicle stationary on a hill by using the accelerator
pedal. Always apply
the parking brake and/or service brake. Do not rev the engine unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary. Unexpected acceler-ation may occur if the se

position other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL).
