13. If input switch Code 26 is still displayed, go to TEST NO. 14. If
codes are no longer displayed, replace cruise control ECU.
Test No. 9
A malfunction of Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) or incorrect
vacuum in cruise control vacuum pump or actuator may be present.
Probable causes are:
* Malfunction of VSS.
* Malfunction of cruise control vacuum pump.
* Malfunction of actuator.
* Malfunction of cruise control ECU.
1) Check vehicle speed sensor. See VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR TEST
under COMPONENT TESTS. If speed sensor is okay, go to next step. If
speed sensor is defective, replace VSS.
2) Check cruise control vacuum pump. See VACUUM PUMP TEST
under COMPONENT TESTS. If pump is defective, replace pump. If pump is
okay, go to next step.
3) Check actuator. See ACTUATOR TEST under COMPONENT TESTS.
If actuator is defective, replace actuator. If actuator is okay,
replace cruise control ECU.
Test No. 10
A blown bulb in cruise control main switch or malfunction of
cruise control main switch is probable cause of malfunction. Replace
cruise control main switch.
Test No. 11
A malfunction of cruise control main switch, harness or
connector may exist. Probable causes are:
* Malfunction of cruise control main switch.
* Malfunction of connector.
* Malfunction of harness.
1) Check cruise control main switch. See
CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH TESTS under COMPONENT TESTS. If switch is okay,
go to next step. If switch is defective, replace cruise control main
switch.
2) Disconnect cruise control main switch connector C-01. At
harness side of connector, measure voltage between terminal No. 2 and
ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery
voltage is not present, check joint connector C-130 and junction block
connector C-80. Repair as necessary. See Figs. 16, 18, 26 and 28. If
connectors are okay and malfunction remains, check harness between
cruise control main switch and power supply. Repair as necessary.
3) Check cruise control main switch connector C-01,
combination meter connector C-04, and joint connector C-130. Repair as
necessary. See Figs. 8, 9, 16 and 28. If connectors are okay and
malfunction remains, check harness between cruise control main switch
and dash lights rheostat. Repair as necessary.
Test No. 12
A malfunction of bulb, connector or harness may exist.
Probable causes are:
* Malfunction of bulb.
* Malfunction of connector.
* Malfunction of harness.
* Malfunction of cruise control ECU.
1) Perform cruise control indicator test. See

CRUISE CONTROL INDICATOR TEST under COMPONENT TESTS. If cruise control
indicator is defective, replace indicator. If indicator checks okay,
go to next step.
2) If cruise control indicator illuminates when cruise
control connector C-50 terminal No. 23 is grounded at harness side,
replace cruise control ECU. If indicator does not illuminate, check
combination meter connector C-12 and cruise control ECU connector C-
50. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay and malfunction
remains, check harness between combination meter and cruise control
ECU. Repair as necessary.
Test No. 13
1) Perform stoplight switch test. See
BRAKELIGHT/STOPLIGHT SWITCH TEST under COMPONENT TESTS. If switch is
okay, go to next step. If switch is defective, replace brakelight
switch.
2) Check cruise control ECU connector C-50, stoplight switch
connector C-55 and joint connector C-131. Repair as necessary. See
Figs. 13 , 14, 16 and 29. If connectors are okay and malfunction
remains, check harness between joint connector C-131 and cruise
control ECU.
Test No. 14 (A/T)
1) Perform park/neutral switch test. See
PARK/NEUTRAL SWITCH TEST under COMPONENT TESTS. If switch is okay, go
to next step. If switch is defective, replace switch.
2) Check starter relay. Replace if defective. If relay is
okay, check cruise control ECU connector C-50 and joint connector C-
130. Repair as necessary. See Figs. 13, 16 and 28. If connectors are
okay and malfunction remains, check harness between cruise control ECU
and power supply.
COMPONENT TESTS
ACTUATOR TEST
Remove actuator. Apply vacuum to actuator. Actuator linkage
holder should move more than 1.38" (35 mm). Actuator diaphragm should
hold vacuum. Replace actuator if actuator does not test as specified.
BRAKELIGHT/STOPLIGHT SWITCH TEST
Disconnect stoplight switch connector C-55. When brake pedal
is pressed, continuity should be present between terminals No. 2 and
3. See Fig. 14. When brake pedal is released, continuity should be
present between terminals No. 1 and 4. Replace switch if it does not
test as specified.
CLOCKSPRING TEST
WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service
operation. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Do not
apply electrical power to any component on steering column
without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may
deploy.
If clockspring fails any check, replace with a NEW
clockspring.
1) Check connectors and protective tube for damage and
deformities.
2) Visually check case for damage or deformities.

3) Continuity should be present between:
* Connector No. 1, terminal No. 1 and connector No. 4,
terminal No. 2.
* Connector No. 1, terminal No. 2 and connector No. 4,
terminal No. 1.
* Connector No. 1, terminal No. 3 and connector No. 3.
See Fig. 31.
4) Align paint mark on SRS connector No. 4 with notch in
clockspring connector No. 2 and join connectors. See Fig. 32. Using a
DVOM, check for continuity between terminals No. 22 and 23 at SRS Test
Harness (MB991613) connector No. 5.

CLOSED THROTTLE POSITION SWITCH TEST & THROTTLE POSITION
SENSOR TEST
Closed Throttle Position Switch
1) Disconnect throttle position sensor connector. Continuity
should be present between terminals No. 1 and 2 with accelerator pedal
released. See Fig. 25. Continuity should not be present with
accelerator pedal pressed.
2) If continuity is not present with accelerator released,
loosen throttle position sensor mounting screw. Turn throttle position
sensor completely clockwise. Recheck continuity. Replace throttle
position sensor if closed throttle position switch does not test as
specified.

manufacturer's original setting has been changed.
1) Loosen throttle cable. Loosen fixed SAS lock nut. See
Fig. 7. Turn fixed SAS counterclockwise until throttle valve is fully
closed. Turn fixed SAS clockwise until throttle valve begins to open.
Turn fixed SAS clockwise 1 1/4 turns after throttle valve begins to
open.
2) Tighten lock nut while holding fixed SAS in position.
Adjust throttle cable. Adjust basic idle speed. See BASIC IDLE SPEED.
Adjust Throttle Position (TP) sensor. See TP SENSOR ADJUSTMENT under
THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR.

IDLE MIXTURE
NOTE: Idle mixture is computer controlled on fuel injected engines
and is nonadjustable. CO level should not exceed .5%. HC
level should not exceed 100 ppm. If mixture levels exceed
limits, see G - TESTS W/CODES article.
THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR
TP SENSOR ADJUSTMENT
NOTE: Ensure basic idle speed is set to specification before
adjusting TP sensor. See BASIC IDLE SPEED under IDLE SPEED &

MIXTURE. Perform all adjustments with engine at normal
operating temperature, front wheels in straight-ahead
position, cooling fan and all accessories off, and
transmission in Park or Neutral.
Eclipse 2.0L Non-Turbo
1) TP sensor is not adjustable. Disconnect TP sensor
connector. Using external ohmmeter, measure resistance between TP
sensor terminals No. 1 and 3. See Fig. 8. If resistance is not 3500-
6500 ohms, replace TP sensor.
2) While slowly rotating throttle valve from idle to full
open, measure resistance between TP sensor terminals No. 2 and 3. If
resistance does not change smoothly in proportion to throttle opening,
replace TP sensor.
Montero
1) Disconnect TP sensor connector. Using jumper wires,
connect an external ohmmeter between TP sensor terminals No. 1 and 2.
See Fig. 9 . Insert .025" (.65 mm) feeler gauge between fixed speed
adjusting screw and throttle lever.
2) Loosen TP sensor mounting screws and rotate TP sensor
fully clockwise. Ensure there is continuity between terminals No. 1
and 2. Rotate TP sensor counterclockwise until there is no continuity,
and tighten screws. Install Test Harness (MB991348) between TP sensor
and harness connector.
3) Turn ignition on. Using external voltmeter, measure TP
sensor output voltage between terminals No. 1 and 3. If voltage is not
.4-1.0 volt, check harness and sensor. See DTC P0120 in G - TESTS
W/CODES article.
All Other Models
1) Disconnect TP sensor connector. Using jumper wires,
connect an external ohmmeter between TP sensor terminals No. 1 and 2
on Diamante or No. 3 and 4 on all other models. See Fig. 9. On
Diamante and Mirage 1.8L with cruise control, insert .055" (1.40mm)
feeler gauge between fixed speed adjusting screw and throttle lever.
On Galant, insert .025" (.65 mm) feeler gauge between fixed speed
adjusting screw and throttle lever. On all other models, insert .018"
(.45 mm) feeler gauge between fixed speed adjusting screw and throttle\
lever.
2) Loosen TP sensor mounting screws and rotate TP sensor
fully counterclockwise. Ensure there is continuity between terminals
No. 1 and 2 on Diamante, or No. 3 and 4 on all other models. Rotate TP
sensor clockwise until there is no continuity and tighten screws.
Install Test Harness (MB991348) between TP sensor and harness
connector.
3) Turn ignition on. Using external voltmeter, measure TP
sensor output voltage between terminals No. 1 and 3 on Diamante, or
No. 2 and 4 on all other models. If voltage is not .4-1.0 volt, check
harness and sensor. See DTC P0120 in G - TESTS W/CODES article.

Mitsubishi - Rear Window Defoggers
Diamante, Eclipse, Galant, Mirage, Montero, Montero Sport,
3000GT
DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
Rear window defogger is a heating filament grid bonded to
inside of window. Rear window defogger is controlled by defogger
switch on instrument panel and a defogger relay.
On Montero, a timer relay controls defogger operation for 9-
11 minutes, then turns defogger off. On Eclipse and Galant, defogger
timer circuit is integral with Electronic Timer Alarm Control System
(ETACS) ECU. Timer will operate defogger for 11 minutes then turn off,\
even with defogger switch in ON position and indicator light
illuminated. On Diamante, timer will operate defogger for 20 minutes,
then turn off.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

NOTE: For additional trouble shooting information on Eclipse and
Galant, see SYMPTOM TESTS.
DEFOGGER DOES NOT WORK
Check for blown fuse, poor contact, defective defogger
switch, poor connection or open wire.
DEFOGGER TIMER INOPERATIVE

NOTE: The following information only applies to Eclipse and Galant.
NOTE: Perform INPUT SIGNAL INSPECTION before proceeding with
SYSTEM TESTS. To identify circuit connector terminals, see
WIRING DIAGRAMS .
Communication With All Systems Not Possible (Eclipse &
Galant)
1) Check voltage between ground and Data Link Connector (DLC)\
terminal No. 16 (Red/Black wire on Eclipse or Brown/Red wire on
Galant). See Fig. 1. If battery voltage is present, go to step 3). If
battery voltage is not present, go to next step.
2) Check junction block connectors between DLC and power
supply. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If connectors are okay, check circuit
between power supply and DLC. See WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as
necessary.
3) Check continuity between ground and DLC terminals No. 4
and 5. If continuity is present, replace scan tool and retest. If
continuity is not present, check circuit between ground and DLC. See
WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary.
Communication With One-Shot Pulse Input Signal Only Is Not
Possible (Eclipse & Galant)
Check circuit between DLC and junction block No. 1. See
WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, check
harness connectors to ETACS-ECU, DLC and junction/joint connectors.
Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace ECU.
Defogger Does Not Operate With Defogger Switch ON (Eclipse &
Galant)
1) Check defogger switch input signal. See
INPUT SIGNAL INSPECTION . If switch input signal is okay, check
defogger circuit and relay. See DEFOGGER RELAY TEST under COMPONENT
TESTS. Repair or replace as necessary. If switch input signal is not
okay, go to next step.
2) Check defogger switch. See DEFOGGER SWITCH TEST under
COMPONENT TESTS. Replace as necessary. If defogger switch is okay,
turn ignition on. Check voltage between ground and defogger switch
harness-side connector terminal No. 4 (Eclipse) or terminal No. 2
(Galant). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage reading is 5 volts (Eclipse)
or battery voltage (Galant), go to next step. If voltage reading is
not as specified, go to step 4).
3) Check joint/junction connectors between switch, instrument
panel cluster and ETACS-ECU. See WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as necessary.
If connectors are okay, check circuit between defogger switch and
ground. Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, replace ECU.
4) Check harness connectors to ETACS-ECU and instrument panel
cluster. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, check circuit
between ECU and defogger switch. Repair as necessary.
Defogger Relay Circuit System Check (Eclipse & Galant)
1) Check defogger relay. See DEFOGGER RELAY TEST under
COMPONENT TESTS. Replace as necessary. If relay is okay, go to next
step.
2) Check voltage between ground and relay harness-side
connector terminals No. 3 and 5. See WIRING DIAGRAMS. If battery
voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not
present, go to step 4).
3) Check harness connectors to relay, ETACS-ECU, junction
block and rear wiring/liftgate. See WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as
necessary. If connectors are okay, check circuit between defogger
relay and rear defogger, defogger and ground, or defogger relay and
ECU. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary. If circuits are okay,

replace ECU.
4) Check harness connectors to junction block and ignition
switch. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, check circuit
between ignition switch and junction block, and between fusible link
No. 2 and junction block. See WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as necessary.
COMPONENT TESTS
DEFOGGER RELAY TEST
Diamante & Eclipse
1) Remove defogger relay. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS. Ground
relay terminal No. 1, and apply battery voltage to terminal No. 3. See
Fig. 2 . Check relay continuity using ohmmeter.
2) Continuity should exist between terminals No. 2 and 5.
With voltage disconnected, continuity should not exist between
terminals No. 2 and 5. Ensure continuity exists between terminals No.
1 and 3. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay.
Galant, Mirage & Montero Sport
1) Remove defogger relay. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS. Ground
relay terminal No. 3, and apply battery voltage to terminal No. 1. See
Fig. 2 . Check relay continuity using ohmmeter.
2) Continuity should exist between terminals No. 2 and 5.
With voltage disconnected, continuity should not exist between
terminals No. 2and 5. Ensure continuity exists between terminals No. 1
and 3. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay.
Montero
1) Remove defogger relay. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS. Ground
relay terminal No. 3 and apply battery voltage to terminal No. 1. See
Fig. 3 . Check relay continuity using ohmmeter.
2) Continuity should exist between terminals No. 4 and 5.
With voltage disconnected, continuity should not exist between
terminals No. 4and 5. Ensure continuity exists between terminals No. 1
and 3. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay.
3000GT
1) Remove defogger relay. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS. Ground
relay terminal No. 3, and apply battery voltage to terminal No. 5. See
Fig. 4 . Check relay continuity using ohmmeter.
2) Continuity should exist between terminals No. 1 and 2.
With voltage disconnected, continuity should not exist between
terminals No. 1and 2. Ensure continuity exists between terminals No. 3
and 5. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay.

DEFOGGER TIMER TEST
Montero
Remove defogger timer from interior relay block. Connect test
battery and test light to timer. See Fig. 7. Ensure test light
illuminates for about 11 seconds when battery voltage is applied to
terminal No. 3. Reapply battery voltage to terminal No. 3 and observe
test light. Test light should go off. If timer does not test as
specified, replace timer.
