4-wheel drive operation requires special driv- ing skills.Carefully read the “4-wheel drive operation” section on page 5-81 and take care to drive safety.
The control mode can
be switched by press
the switch while the operation mode in ON. If you press the switch, you can change the control mode in the order of AWC ECO,NORMAL, SNOW, LOCK, AWC ECO.
The currently selected control mode is dis- played on the multi-
information display.
In addition, when the control mode ischanged, the selected mode appears on the interrupt display screen of the information screen in the multi-information display.The control mode displa
y will appear on the
information screen for a few seconds, and then the original screen will return.
S-AWC control mode
Function

This is the most fuel efficient mode. Normal operation is in 2WD, but 4WD performance will be provided under slippery conditions.
NORMAL
This mode can be used on both dry and wet roads. The distri- bution of driving/braking torque to each wheel is auto-matically controlled according to the driving condition.
SNOW
This mode is for driving on slippery road surfaces, such as snow-covered roads.
LOCK
This mode is for driving where maximum traction is required. This mode is suitable for driv-ing on rough roads or driving in mud, sand or fresh snow.
S-AWC drive mode-selector

CAUTION Do not operate the drive mode-selector with the front wheels spinning on a snowy road or in similar conditions
. The vehicle could
lunge in an unexpected direction. Driving on dry, paved roads in “LOCK” mode causes increased fuel consumption andnoise.

When turning a sharp corner in “4WD LOCK” or “LOCK” posi
tion at low speed, a
slight difference in
steering may be experi-
enced similar to feeling as if the brakes wereapplied. This is calle
d tight corner braking
and results from each of the four tires being at a different distance from the corner. The phe-nomenon is typical of 4-
wheel drive vehicles.
If this occurs, either straighten out the steer- ing wheel or change to another mode. Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD AUTO”, “4WD LOCK” or “SNOW” inaccordance with the road conditions, and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start.

start assist is activated, the vehicle may move backwards if the brake pedal is not suf-ficiently depressed, if the vehicle is heavily loaded, or if the road is very steep or slip- pery. The hill start assist is
not designed to keep
the vehicle stopped in place on uphill slopesfor more than 2 seconds. When facing uphill, do not rely on using the hill start assist to
maintain a stopped position
as an alternative to depressing the brake pedal.Doing so could cause an accident. Do not turn the ignition switch to the “OFF”, “LOCK” or “ACC” po
sition while the hill
start assist is operating. The hill start assist could stop operating,
which could result in

The anti-lock braking
system helps prevent
the wheels from locking up when braking. This helps maintain vehicle drivability andsteering wheel handling.
 When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly different from normal driving conditions. Use the steering wheel carefully. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi- cle is equipped with
the anti-lock braking
system, leave a greater braking distance when: • Driving on gravel or snow-covered roads. • Driving on uneven road surfaces. Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted
situations where brakes are
applied suddenly. This system may alsoprevent the wheels from locking when you drive over manholes, steel roadwork plates, road markings
, or any uneven road
surface.  When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat-ing and hear a unique
sound. It may also
feel as if the pedal
resists being pressed.
In this situation, simply hold the brakepedal down firmly. Do not pump the brake, which will result in reduced braking performance.

 The anti-lock braking system can be used after the vehicle has

approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). It stops working when the vehicle slows below 3 mph (5 km/h).

Cruise control is an automatic speed control system that keeps a set speed. It can be acti- vated at speeds from about 25 mph(40 km/h). Cruise cont
rol does not work at
speeds below about 25 mph (40 km/h).
NOTE
 The indicator may come on when you start the engine. This means that the battery voltage momentarily dropped when theengine was started. It
does not indicate a
malfunction, provided th
at the display goes
out immediately.  When a spare tire has been put on your vehi- cle, the gripping ability of the tire will be lower, making it more
likely that the dis-
play/indicator will blink.

Cruise control
CAUTION When you do not wish to drive at a set speed, turn off the cruise control for safety. Do not use cruise control when driving con- ditions will not allow
you to stay at the same
speed, such as in heavy traffic or on roadsthat are winding, icy, snow-covered, wet, slippery, on a steep downhill slope.NOTE
 Cruise control may not
be able to keep your
speed on uphills or downhills.  Your speed may decr
ease on a steep uphill.
You may use the accelerator pedal if youwant to stay at your set speed.  Your speed may increase to more than the set speed on a steep downhill. You have to usethe brake to control your speed. As a result, the set speed driving is deactivated.
