The operation mode can be in any mode to start the engine.
The starter motor will be turning for up to approximately 15 seconds if the engineswitch is released at once. Pressing the engine switch again while the starter motor is still turning will stop the startermotor. The starter motor will be turning for up to approximately 30 se
conds while the
engine switch is pressed. If the engine does not start, wait for a while and then attempt to start the engine again. Trying repeatedly with the engine or starter motor still turning will damagethe starter mechanism. If the engine will not start because the bat- tery is weak or discharged, refer to“Jump-starting the engine” on page 8-2 for instructions. A longer warm up period will only con- sume extra fuel. The engine is warmed up enough for driv- ing when the bar graph of engine coolanttemperature display starts to move or the low coolant temperature indicator goes out. Refer to “Engine
coolant temperature
display” on page 5-128 or “Low coolant temperature indica
tor” on page 5-166.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel injection system. This system automatically controls fuel injection. There is no need to depress the accelerator pedal when starting the engine. To prevent battery drai
n, wait a few seconds
between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened. 2. Make sure the parking brake is applied.3. Press and hold the brake pedal down with your right foot.
If there is a fault in the steering wheel lock, the warning display will
appear. Immediately
stop the vehicle in a sa
fe place and contact
an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Warning display

Tips for starting
NOTE
WA R N I N G Never run the engine in
a closed or poorly
ventilated area any lo
nger than is needed
to move your vehicle out of the area. Car-bon monoxide gas, whic
h is odorless and
extremely poisonous, could build up and cause serious injury or death.CAUTION Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine at high rpms or drive at high speeds until the engine has had achance to warm up.

Warning display (color liquid crystal display type) Warning light (mono-color liquid crystal dis- play type) If the operation mode is in OFF and the driver’s door is opened with the F.A.S.T.-key in the key slot, a warning is issued with the warning display and the buzzer buzzing forapproximately 3 seconds to remind you to remove the key.
Stopping the engine
WA R N I N G Do not operate the en
gine switch while
driving except in an emergency. If theengine is stopped while driving, the brake servomechanism will ce
ase to function and
braking efficiency will deteriorate. Also, the power steering system will not func- tion and it will require greater manual effort to operate the steering. This couldresult in a serious accident.NOTE
If you have to bring the engine to an emer- gency stop while drivi
ng, press and hold the
engine switch for 3 sec
onds or more, or press
it quickly 3 times or more. The engine will stop and the operation mode will go to ACC. Do not stop the engine wi
th the selector lever
in any position other than the “P” (PARK) position. If the engine
is stopped with the
selector lever in any
position other than the
“P” (PARK) position, the operation mode will go to ACC rather than OFF.Put the operation mode
in OFF after placing
the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) posi- tion.
If the F.A.S.T.-key is not operat- ing properly
NOTE
Do not insert into the
key slot anything other
than the F.A.S.T.-key. This could cause dam- age or a malfunction.
Remove the object or ad
ditional key from the
F.A.S.T.-key before inserting the key into thekey slot. The vehicle
may not be able to
receive the registered ID code from the regis- tered key. Therefore, the engine may not start and the operation mode may not change.

When leaving the ve
hicle unattended, be
sure to close the sunroof and carry the key. Do not try to operate th
e sunroof if it is fro-
zen closed (after snowfall or during extreme cold). Do not sit on or plac
e heavy luggage on the
sunroof or roof opening edge. Do not apply any force that may cause dam- age to the sunroof. Release the switch when the sunroof has reached a completely
open or completely
closed position. If the sunroof does not operate when the sun- roof switch is operate
d, release the switch
and check whether something is trapped by the sunroof. If nothing is trapped, have thesunroof checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Be careful when tilting up the sunroof if a ski carrier or a roof carrier is installed. Depend- ing on the model of ski carrier or roof carrier, the sunroof may contact the carrier when the sunroof is tilted up. Be sure to close the sunroof completely when washing the vehicle or when leaving the vehicle. Do not put any wax on the weatherstrip (black rubber) around the sunroof opening. Ifit is waxed, the weathe
rstrip cannot maintain
a weatherproof seal
with the sunroof.
After washing the vehi
cle or after rain be
sure to wipe off any water that is on the sun- roof before operating it.
Operating the sunroof repeatedly with the engine turned off will run down the battery.Operate the sunroof onl
y while the engine is

To gain extra acceleration in “D” (DRIVE) position (when passing another vehicle) push
the accelerator to the floor. The automatic transaxle will automatically downshift. For short waiting periods, such as at traffic lights, the vehicle can be
left in gear and held
stationary with the service brake. For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place th
e selector lever in the “N”
(NEUTRAL) position and apply the parking brake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the service brake.Prior to moving off after having stopped the vehicle, make sure that the selector lever is in “D” (DRIVE) position or Sports mode posi-tion.
To park the vehicle, fi
rst bring it to a com-
plete stop, fully engage the parking brake, and then move the selector lever to the “P”(PARK) position. If the transaxle does not change gears while driving, or your vehicle does not pick upenough speed when starting on an uphill slope, it may be that there is something unusual happening in the
transaxle, causing a
safety device to activa
te. Have your vehicle
checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair fac
ility of your choice as
soon as possible.
To prevent sudden acce
leration, never run
the engine at high rpms when shifting fromthe “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). Operating the accelerator pedal while the other foot is resting
on the brake pedal will
affect braking efficiency and may cause pre- mature wear of brake pads. Use the selector lever in the correct shift position in accordance
with driving condi-
tions.Never coast downhill backward in the driv- ing shift position {“D” (DRIVE), “L” (LOW) position or sports mode} or coastforward in the “R” (REVERSE) position. Engine stopping and increased brake pedal and steering effort could
lead to an accident.
Do not rev the engine
with the brake pedal
pressed when the vehicle is stationary. This can damage the transaxle. Also, when you depress
the accelerator pedal
while holding down the brake pedal with theselector lever in th
e “D” (DRIVE) position,
the engine revolutions
may not rise as high
as when performing the same operation withthe selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
Passing acceleration
CAUTION
NOTE
In sports mode, downshi
fts do not take place
when the accelerator is depressed all the way to the floor.
Waiting
CAUTION To avoid transaxle ove
rheating, never try to
keep your vehicle stationary on a hill byusing the accelerator
pedal. Always apply
the parking brake and/or service brake.
Do not rev the engine unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary. Unexpected acceler-ation may occur if the se
lector lever is in a
position other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL).

To prevent mistakes in operating the lever, make sure you stop brie
fly at each position.
After operating, check
the position in the
multi-information display. If the brake pedal is not depressed and held, the shift-lock device activates to prevent the selector lever from being moved from the“P” (PARK) position. For a shift indicated by in the illustra- tion, depress the brake pedal before moving the selector lever. If you attempt to move the selector lever before
depressing the brake
pedal, the selector le
