ration mode is put in
ON, this indicator
normally comes on and
goes off after the engine has started.
This indicator will come on if the fuel tankfiller cap is not properly tightened. If thisindicator comes on and stays on after refuel-ing, stop the engine and check that the cap isproperly tightened. (Turn the cap clockwiseuntil you hear clicking sounds.)If this indicator does not go off after severalseconds or lights up while driving, have thesystem checked as soon as possible at anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice.

Check the battery. At the same time,check the terminals and wiring. Duringextremely cold weather, the battery willnot be as strong. Also, the battery powerlevel may drop beca

used for cold starting and driving.
Before driving the vehicle, check to see ifthe engine runs at the proper speed and ifthe headlights are as bright as normally.Charge or replace the battery if necessary.During extreme cold weather, it is possi-ble that a very low battery could freeze.Warm the engine sufficiently. After start-ing the engine, allow a short warm-uptime to distribute oil to all cylinders. Thendrive your vehicle slowly.Stay at low speeds at first so that thetransaxle, transfer case and rear axle oilhave time to spread to all lubricationpoints.Check the engine antifreeze.If there is not enough coolant because of aleak or from engine
overheating, add Mit-

Tongue loads can be adjusted by proper dis-tribution of the load in the trailer. This can bechecked by separately
weighing the loaded
trailer and then the tongue.The GAWRs are printed on the certificationlabel which is riveted on the door sill on thedriver’s side.Refer to “Vehicle labeling” on page 11-2.Choose a proper hitch and ball, and makesure it is installed at a height that is compati-ble with the trailer.Use a good equalizing hitch which uniformlydistributes the trailer tongue load throughoutthe frame.
A safety chain must al
ways be used between
the towing vehicle and the trailer. Leave suf-ficient slack in the chain for turns. The chainshould cross under the trailer tongue to pre-vent the tongue from dropping to the groundin case it becomes damaged or separated.For correct safety chai

Your vehicle will need service more oftenwhen you’re towing a trailer. Refer to “WAR-RANTY AND MAINTENANCE MAN-UAL”. Especially important in traileroperation are automatic transaxle fluid,engine oil, rear axle

its own electric or surge-type brakes.If you choose electric br
akes, be sure they are
electrically actuated. Do not attempt to tapinto your vehicle’s hydraulic system. No mat-ter how successful it
may seem, any attempt
to attach trailer brakes to your vehicle’shydraulic system will lower braking effec-tiveness and create a potential hazard.
Gross axle weight rating (GAWR) Trailer hitches
WA R N I N GIf you make any holes in the body of yourvehicle for installing
a trailer hitch, be
sure to seal the holes later when youremove the hitch. If
you don’t seal them,
deadly carbon monoxide (CO) from yourexhaust can enter your vehicle. Refer to“Exhaust system” on page 9-24.

Normally, the catalyti
c converter does not
require maintenance. However, it is importantto keep the engine properly tuned for the con-verter to continue to work properly.To reduce the possibili
ty of catalytic con-
verter damage:Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY ofthe type of recommended in the “Fuelselection”.Do not drive with an extremely low fuellevel. Running out of gas could damagethe catalytic converter.
Do not try to start the engine by pushingor towing the vehicle. If the battery isweak or run down, use jumper cables toproperly start the engine.Do not idle the engine with any spark plugwires disconnected or removed, such aswhen performing
diagnosti
c tests.
Do not idle the engine
for a long time if it
is idling roughly or otherwise obviouslymalfunctioning.To prevent the catalytic converter frombeing damaged from unburned gas, do notrace the engine when turning off the igni-tion switch.Stop driving the vehicle if you think theperformance is noticeably low, or theengine has a malfunction such as with theignition, etc. If you are not able to stopdriving immediately,
slow down and drive
for only a short time. Have your vehiclechecked at an authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice as soon
as possible.
In unusual situations involving majorengine problems, a burning odor mayindicate severe and abnormal catalyticconverter overheating.
If this occurs, stop
in a safe place, shut the engine off and letthe vehicle cool. Once
the engine is cool,
immediately take
your vehicle to an
authorized Mitsubishi
Motors dealer or a
repair facility of your choice for service.

tant that the transaxle
fluid is kept at the correct level.The fluid level should be checked when thebar graph for the engine coolant temperaturedisplay on the multi-information displayshows the engine is warmed up and the fluidin the transaxle is heated to its normal work-ing temperature. Driving with the wrong fluidlevel will rapidly wear
out the transaxle and
destroy the fluid.1. With the brake pedal fully depressed andthe engine idling,
select each gear
momentarily, ending with the selectorlever in the “P” (PARK) position.
2. The fluid level should be at the HOTmark, but never above the HOT markwhen the engine is warmed up. Add ordrain fluid to get to the correct level.3. Make certain that the dipstick cap isinstalled properly to keep dirt and waterout of the transaxle.
