If the electrical circuits become wet, furtheroperation of the vehicle will be impossible; therefore, avoid driving through water unless absolutely necessary. If driving through wateris unavoidable, use the following procedure: Check the depth of the water and the terrain before attempting to drive through it. Drive slowly to avoid creating excessive water splashing.

After operating the vehicle in rough road con- ditions, be sure to perform the following inspection and maintenance procedures: Check that the vehicle has not been dam- aged by rocks, gravel, etc. Carefully wash the vehicle with water. Drive the vehicle slowly while lightlydepressing the brake pedal in order to dry out the brakes. If the brakes still do not function properly, contact an authorizedMitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice as soon as possible to have the brakes checked. Remove the insects, dried grass, etc. clog- ging the radiator core.
After driving through water, check the engine, transaxle and differential oil. If the oil or grease is milky or cloudy because of water contamination, it mustbe replaced with new oil. Check the inside of the vehicle. If water entry is found, dry the carpet etc. Inspect the headlights. If water is in the headlight housing, have it drained at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice. Have an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer replace grease in the wheel bear- ings.

Since the driving torque can be applied to thefour wheels, the driving performance of thevehicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is greatly affected by the condition of the tires. Pay close attention to the tires. Install only the specified tires on all wheels. Refer to “Tires and wheels” onpage 11-5.
Driving through water
CAUTION Never drive through water that is deep enough to cover wheel hubs, axles or exhaust pipe. Do not change the gearshift lever posi-tion (M/T) or the selector lever position (CVT) while driving through water. Frequent driving through water canadversely affect the life span of the vehicle; consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice and take the necessary measures to prepare, inspect, and repair the vehicle.
After driving through water, apply the brakes to be sure they are functioning properly. If the brakes are wet and not functioning prop- erly, dry them out by driving slowly while lightly depressing the brake pedal. Inspecteach part of the vehicle carefully.

Be sure all four tires and wheels are the same size and type. When it is necessary to replace any of the tires or wheels, replace all four. All tires should be rotated before the wear difference between the front and rear tires is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wear between tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” on page 9-19. Check the tire inflation pressure regularly.

Overuse of the brake can cause weakening, resulting in poor brake response and prema- ture wear of the brake pads.When driving down a long or steep hill, use engine braking by downshifting.
CAUTION Always use tires of the same size, type, and brand that have no wear differences. Usingtires of different size, type, brands or degree of wear, will increase the differential oil tem- perature and result in possible damage to thedriving system. Further, the drive train will be subject to excessive loading, possibly leading to oil leakage, component seizure, orother serious failures.

Jacking up a 4-wheel drive vehicle
WA R N I N G Do not crank the engine while jacking up the vehicle.The tire on the ground may turn and the vehicle may roll off the jack.

WA R N I N G Do not leave any objects near the brake pedal or let a floor mat slide under it; doing so could prevent the full pedal stroke that would be necessary in anemergency. Make sure that the pedal can be operated freely at all times. Make sure the floor mat is securely held in place.

ped condition. It also
provides sufficient driving force and steering performance as the vehicle turns while press- ing the acceleration pedal.

The skid control function is designed to helpthe driver maintain control of the vehicle onslippery roads or during rapid steering maneuvers. It works by controlling the engine output and the brake on each wheel.

The ASC is automatically activated when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or the operation mode is put in ON. You candeactivate the system by pressing down the“ASC OFF” switch for 3 seconds or longer.
When the ASC is deactivated, the dis- play/indicator will turn on. To reactivate the ASC, momentarily press the “ASC OFF” switch ; the display/indicator is turned off.
Do not install any aftermarket limited slip differential (LSD) on your vehicle. The ASC may stop functioning properly.NOTE
An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa- tions. The sound is associated with checkingthe operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if you depress it. These do not indicate a malfunc-tion. • When the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or the operation mode is put in ON. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.
When the ASC is activated, you may feel a vibration in the vehicle body or hear a whin- ing sound from the engine compartment.This indicates that the system is operating normally. It does not indicate a malfunction. When the anti-lock braking system warning light is illuminated, the ASC is not active.
Traction control function
CAUTION
CAUTION When driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy road, be sure to install snow tires and drivethe vehicle at moderate speeds.
Skid control function
NOTE
The skid control function operates at speeds of about 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher.
ASC OFF switch
CAUTION For safety reasons, the “ASC OFF” switch should be operated when your vehicle isstopped. Be sure to keep the ASC on while driving in normal circumstances.NOTE
Using the “ASC OFF” switch turns off both the stability control function and the tractioncontrol function.

Cold inflation pressure must not go above the maximum values molded into the tire side- wall. After driving several miles, your tire inflation pressure may increase 2 to 6 psi (14to 41 kPa) from the cold inflation pressure. Do not let air out of the tires to get back to the specified cold pressure, or your tires will betoo low. Check your tires each time you refuel. If one tire looks lower than the others, check thepressure for all of them.You should also take the following safety precautions: Keep your tires inflated to the recom- mended pressures. (See the tire and load-ing information placard attached to the driver’s door sill.) Stay within the recommended load limits. Make sure that the weight of any load in your vehicle is evenly distributed. Drive at safe speeds. After filling your tires to the correct pres- sure, check them for damage and air leaks. Be sure to reinstall the caps on thevalve stems.

Check tire pressures regularly. Have regular maintenance done on the wheel balance and front and rear suspen- sion alignment. Rotate your tires regularly as described in the “Tire rotation” section on page 9-19.

Tread wear indicators are built into the origi- nal equipment tires on your vehicle to helpyou know when your tires should be replaced. Many states have laws requiring that you replace your tires at this point.These indicators are molded into the bottom of the tread grooves and will appear when the tire tread is worn down to 1/16 inch (1.6mm).
Replacing tires and wheels
CAUTION Avoid using different
size tires from the one
listed and the combined use of different types of tires, as this can affect driving safety.Refer to “Tires and wheels” on page 11-5. On all-wheel drive vehicles, always use tires of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear differences. Using tires that differ in size, type, brand or thedegree of wear, will increase the differential oil temperature, resulting in possible damage to the driving system. Further, the drive trainwill be subjected to excessive loading, possi- bly leading to oil leakage, component sei- zure, or other serious problems. Only Mitsubishi Motors Authorized wheels should be used, because your vehicle isequipped with a tire pressure monitoring sys- tem. Use of another type of wheel risks air leaksand sensor damage, as it will not be possible to install the tire pressure sensor properly.
