Advanced automobile manufacturing tech- niques permit you to operate your new vehi-cle without requiring a long break-in period of low-speed driving. However, you can add to the future perfor-mance and economy of your vehicle by observing the following precautions during the first 300 miles (500 km).Drive your vehicle at moderate speeds duringthe break-in period.  Avoid revving the engine.  Avoid rough driving such as sudden starts, sudden acceleration, prolonged high-speed driving and sudden braking. These would have a detrimental effect on the engine and also cause increased fuel andoil consumption, which could result in malfunction of the engine components. Be particularly careful to avoid full accelera-tion while in low shift position (low gears).  Do not overload the vehicle. Stay within the seating capacity. (Refer to “Cargo load precautions” on page 6-11.)  Do not use this vehicle for trailer towing.

If the electrical circuits become wet, furtheroperation of the vehicle will be impossible; therefore, avoid driving through water unless absolutely necessary. If driving through wateris unavoidable, use the following procedure: Check the depth of the water and the terrain before attempting to drive through it. Drive slowly to avoid creating excessive water splashing.

After operating the vehicle in rough road con- ditions, be sure to perform the following inspection and maintenance procedures:  Check that the vehicle has not been dam- aged by rocks, gravel, etc.  Carefully wash the vehicle with water. Drive the vehicle slowly while lightlydepressing the brake pedal in order to dry out the brakes. If the brakes still do not function properly, contact an authorizedMitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice as soon as possible to have the brakes checked. Remove the insects, dried grass, etc. clog- ging the radiator core.
 After driving through water, check the engine, transaxle and differential oil. If the oil or grease is milky or cloudy because of water contamination, it mustbe replaced with new oil.  Check the inside of the vehicle. If water entry is found, dry the carpet etc. Inspect the headlights. If water is in the headlight housing, have it drained at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice. Have an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer replace grease in the wheel bear- ings.

Since the driving torque can be applied to thefour wheels, the driving performance of thevehicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is greatly affected by the condition of the tires. Pay close attention to the tires. Install only the specified tires on all wheels. Refer to “Tires and wheels” onpage 11-5.
Driving through water
CAUTION Never drive through water that is deep enough to cover wheel hubs, axles or exhaust pipe. Do not change the gearshift lever posi-tion (M/T) or the selector lever position (CVT) while driving through water. Frequent driving through water canadversely affect the life span of the vehicle; consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice and take the necessary measures to prepare, inspect, and repair the vehicle.
 After driving through water, apply the brakes to be sure they are functioning properly. If the brakes are wet and not functioning prop- erly, dry them out by driving slowly while lightly depressing the brake pedal. Inspecteach part of the vehicle carefully.

 Be sure all four tires and wheels are the same size and type. When it is necessary to replace any of the tires or wheels, replace all four. All tires should be rotated before the wear difference between the front and rear tires is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wear between tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” on page 9-19.  Check the tire inflation pressure regularly.

Overuse of the brake can cause weakening, resulting in poor brake response and prema- ture wear of the brake pads.When driving down a long or steep hill, use engine braking by downshifting.
CAUTION Always use tires of the same size, type, and brand that have no wear differences. Usingtires of different size, type, brands or degree of wear, will increase the differential oil tem- perature and result in possible damage to thedriving system. Further, the drive train will be subject to excessive loading, possibly leading to oil leakage, component seizure, orother serious failures.

CAUTION Do not tow 4-wheel drive vehicles with the front or rear wheels on the ground (Type Aor Type B) as illustrated. This could result in damage to the drivetrain, or unstable towing. If you tow 4-wheel dr

Jacking up a 4-wheel drive vehicle
WA R N I N G Do not crank the engine while jacking up the vehicle.The tire on the ground may turn and the vehicle may roll off the jack.

WA R N I N G Do not leave any objects near the brake pedal or let a floor mat slide under it; doing so could prevent the full pedal stroke that would be necessary in anemergency. Make sure that the pedal can be operated freely at all times. Make sure the floor mat is securely held in place.

 Wear your seat belt properly. Refer to “Seat belt warning” on page 4-15.

Oil pressure warning display
CAUTION If the vehicle is driven while the engine oil is low, or the oil level is normal but the warn- ing is displayed, the engine may overheat and damage may result. If the warning is displayed while the engine is running, park your vehicle in a safe place as soon as possible and check the engine oillevel. If this warning display comes on when the engine oil level is proper, have your vehicle checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.NOTE
 The oil pressure warning display does not show the amount of oil. The oil level must be checked using the dipstick.
Combination headlights and dimmer switch Headlights
NOTE
 Do not leave the headlights and other lights on for a long period of time when the engineis not running. The battery will run down.
 When it rains, or when the vehicle has been washed, the inside of the lens sometimes becomes foggy. This is the same as when window glass mists up on a humid day, and does not indicate a problem. When the lightis switched on, the heat will dry out the fog. However, if water collects inside the light, have it checked by an authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

 Before changing lanes, check your mir- rors and use your turn-signal light.  While driving, watch the behavior of other drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Always obey applicable laws and regula- tions. Be a polite and alert driver. Always leave room for unexpected events, such assudden braking.  If you plan to drive in another country, obey their vehicle registration laws andmake sure you will be able to get the rightfuel.

 Check the battery. At the same time, check the terminals and wiring. Duringextremely cold weather, the battery will not be as strong. Also, the battery power level may drop because more power isused for cold starting and driving. Before driving the vehicle, check to see if the engine runs at the proper speed and ifthe headlights are as bright as normally.Charge or replace the battery if necessary. During extreme cold weather, it is possi- ble that a very low battery could freeze.  Warm the engine sufficiently. After start- ing the engine, allow a short warm-up time to distribute oil to all cylinders. Then drive your vehicle slowly. Stay at low speeds at first so that the transaxle, transfer case and rear axle oil have time to spread to all the lubricationpoints.
 Manual transaxle can be harder to shift in cold weather conditions. This is normal and shifting will get easier as the transaxle warms up. Check the engine antifreeze. If there is not enough coolant because of a leak or from engine overheating, addMitsubishi Motors Genuine Super Long Life Coolant Premium or equivalent. Please read this section in conjunctionwith the “Engine coolant” on page 9-7.

It is normal for an engi
ne to use oil. You may
need to add oil between the recommended oilchange intervals. Before starting the engine, check the engine oil level. Refill if necessary. To check the oil level, remove the dipstick, wipe it off, and gently reinsert it all the way. Slowly pull the dipstick straight out andcheck the oil level by checking the upper sur- face of the dipstick. Th
e oil level must not go
above the line on the dipstick. If the level does not reach the line which shows the smallest amount of oil required, remove the oil filler cap on the engine valve cover, and fill to within the “Good” range.

Mitsubishi Motors recommends using only engine oils with the ILSAC certification sym- bol on the front of the container. If you cannot find oils with the ILSAC certi- fication symbol, use an API classification SN or higher oil with the following label.
This mark appears on the top of the oil con- tainer and tells you two important things about the oil. Use engine oil with the proper thickness for the outdoor temperatures where you will bedriving.
SAE 0W-20 engine oil is strongly recom- mended for optimum fuel economy and cold starting.If SAE 0W-20 is not available, the ILSAC certification oil of other viscosity grades can be temporarily used. The oil filter should be
replaced at the time or
mileage specified in the “WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL”.Only use high quality replacement filters on this vehicle. The manufacturer’s specifica- tions for Genuine Mitsubishi oil filtersrequire that the filter can withstand a pressure of 256 psi (1.8 MPa). A Genuine Mitsubishi oil filter is the best replacement filter.Follow the installation
instructions printed on
the filter.
 The engine oil will deteriorate rapidly if the vehicle is subjected to severe conditions (for example, repeated operation on rough roads, in mountainous regions, on roads with many uphill and downhill gradients, or over shortdistances). Consequently, the oil will require earlier replacement in accordance with the schedule in the “WARRANTY AND MAIN-TENANCE MANUAL”.

The engine coolant reserve tank (A) lets you quickly see when you need to add coolant. When the engine is cold, the level of the cool-ant in the reserve tank should be between the FULL and LOW marks. The radiator usually stays full so there is no reason to remove theradiator cap (B) except when you check thecoolant freeze point or replace the antifreeze coolant.
Mitsubishi Motors Genuine Coolant provides excellent protection against corrosion and rust formation on all metals, including alumi- num, and prevents clogs in some parts of theengine. If you need to add co
olant often, or if the
level in the reserve tank does not drop whenthe engine cools, the cooling system shouldbe pressure-tested for leaks. Take your vehi- cle to an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer
or a repair facility of your choice for testing.
The radiator cap must be tight sealed to pre- vent losing coolant, which may result in engine damage. Only use a GenuineMitsubishi Parts radiator cap, or an approved equivalent.  Do not overfill the reserve tank.

Above -31 °F (-35 °C) : 50 % concentration of anti-freeze Below -31 °F (-35 °C) : 60 % concentrationof anti-freeze You can check the concentration level with a gauge from an automotive supply store, oryour authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or service station can check it for you.
 Do not use water to adjust the concentration of coolant. Do not top off the tank with plain water only. Water by itself boils at a lower temperatureand does not stop rust or freezing. If the water freezes, it will damage your cooling system. Do not use tapwater. It can causecorrosion and rust.
Radiator cap
WA R N I N G Wait for the engine to cool down before opening the radiator cap. Otherwise hotsteam or boiling coolant could spray up from the radiator and scald you.
