Move the lever to this position only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop. At this position, the transmission is disen- gaged. It is the same as the neutral position ona manual transaxle and should be used when the vehicle is not moving for an extended length of time during driving, such as in atraffic jam.
CAUTION If a malfunction occurs in the CVT while driving, the warning display or the warning display will appear on the informa- tion screen in the multi-information display. In this case, follow these procedures: [When warning display is showing] The continuously variable transmission (CVT) fluid is overheating. The engine con- trol may activate to lower the CVT fluid tem-perature, causing the engine revolutions and vehicle speed to decrease, In this case, take one of the following procedures.• Slow down your vehicle.• Stop your vehicle in a safe place, put the selectorlever in the “P” (PARK) position, and open the engine hood with the enginerunning to allow the engine to cool down.
After a while, confirm that the warning display is no longer showing. It is safe to continue driving if the display is no longer showing. If the warning display remains orflashes frequently, have your vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice. Engine overheating 8-4 For emergencies

If you drive your vehicle with a low battery charge after the engine has been started by using jumper cables, the engine may misfire. This can cause the anti-lock braking systemwarning light to blink on and off. This is only due to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap-pens, fully charge the battery and ensure the charging system is operating properly.
N00836500352
When the engine is overheating, the informa- tion screen in the multi-information displaywill be interrupted and the engine coolant temperature warning display will appear. Also “ ” blink. If this happens: 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers.2. With the engine still running, carefully raise the engine hood to vent the engine compartment.3. Check that the cooling fan is running. If the fan is not turning, stop the engine immediately and contact an authorizedMitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice for assistance. 4. If you see steam or spray coming from under the hood, turn off the engine.
5. If you do not see steam or spray coming from under the hood, leave the engine on until the bar graph for the engine coolant temperature warning display on the multi-information display goes down. When it is in the middle of the normal zone, you can start driving again. If the bar graphstays in the red zone, turn off the engine. 6. When you do not see any more steam or spray, open the hood. Look for obvious leaks, such as a split radiator hose. Be careful as components will be hot. Anyleak source must be repaired. 7. If there is no obvious leak source, check the coolant level in the engine coolantreserve tank. If there is none, or if it is too low, slowly add coolant.
Remove all the caps before charging the battery. Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro- sive diluted sulfuric acid. If electrolytecomes in contact with your hands, eyes, clothes, or the painted surface of your vehicle, thoroughly flush with water. Ifelectrolyte gets in your eyes, flush them immediately and thoroughly with water, and get prompt medical attention. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working near the battery. Keep the battery out of the reach of chil- dren.

To reduce the possibility of catalytic con- verter damage: Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY of the type of recommended in “Fuel selec- tion”. Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of gas could damage the catalytic converter. Do not try to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. If the battery is weak or run down, use jumper cables to properly start the engine.
Do not idle the engine with any spark plug wires disconnected or removed, such as when performing diagnostic tests. Do not idle the engine for a long time if it is idling roughly or otherwise obviously malfunctioning. To prevent the catalytic converter from being damaged from unburned gas, do not race the engine when stopping the engine. Stop driving the vehicle if you think the performance is noticeably low, or theengine has a malfunction such as with the ignition, etc. If you
are not able to stop
driving immediately, slow down and drivefor only a short time. Have your vehicle checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice as soon as possible. In unusual situations involving major engine problems, a burning odor mayindicate severe and abnormal catalytic converter overheating. If this occurs, stop in a safe place, shut the engine off and letthe vehicle cool. Once the engine is cool, immediately take your vehicle to a dealer or a repair facility of your choice for ser-vice.
N00937500477
Use the engine hood release lever (locatedunder the instrument panel near the driver’sdoor) to unlock the engine hood. Pull the lever toward you to release the engine hood latch.
CAUTION Damage to the catalytic converter can result if your vehicle is not kept in proper operating condition. If the engine malfunctions or mis- fires, or if your vehicle performance suffers, have it serviced promptly. Running yourvehicle when it is overheated may result in damage to the converter and vehicle.WA R N I N G Do not park or run your vehicle in areas where combustible materials such as dry grass or leaves can come in contact with a hot exhaust, since a fire could occur. Do not put undercoat paint on the cata- lytic converter.
Engine hood To open
WA R N I N G Never use the release lever to unlatch the engine hood while the vehicle is in motion. Do not drive your vehicle unless the engine hood is locked.

Release the lever and lift the engine hood. Support the engine hood with the hood prop. Insert the hood prop securely in the opening under the hood marked with an arrow.
Unlatch the prop from the engine hood and put it back in its retainer. Slowly lower the engine hood about 8 inches (20 cm), then let it drop from its own weight.
NOTE
To prevent damage to the engine hood and wipers, make sure the wipers are at resting position when you open the engine hood.
CAUTION Always insert the support prop into the hole specially made for it. Propping the engine hood at any other place could cause the prop to slip out and lead to an accident. The hood prop can fall out if the hood is lifted by a strong wind.
To close
CAUTION Be careful not to trap your hands or fingers when closing the engine hood.
Make sure the engine hood is firmly closed before driving. If you drive without the engine hood com- pletely closed, it could open up while driv- ing.NOTE
If this does not close the engine hood prop- erly, drop it again from a slightly higher position. Do not push down strongly on the engine hood. Depending on how strongly or where you push down, you could create a dent inthe vehicle body. If you drive with the engine hood left open, warning display is displayed on the informa- tion screen in the multi-information display.

The windshield and rear window washer fluidreservoir is in the engine compartment.
Check the washer fluid level at regular inter- vals and add washer fluid to reservoir if nec- essary. Open the reservoir cap and check the fluidlevel with the dipstick. When freezing weather is anticipated, flush out the water in the reservoir by operating the pump. Fill the reservoir with windshield anti-freeze (not radiator antifreeze), and operatethe system for a few seconds to flush out the residual water.
N00938700245
The brake fluid and the clutch fluid share the reservoir tank.
The fluid level must be between the “MAX” and “MIN” marks on the reservoir. The fluid level falls slightly with wear of the brake pads, but this does not indicate any abnormality. The fluid in the master cylinder should be checked when doing other work under theengine hood. The brake
system should also be
checked for leaks at the same time. If the fluid level falls markedly in a shortlength of time, it indicates leaks from the brake system. If this occurs, have the vehicle checked by anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

Good brakes are essential for safe driving. Check the brake pads for wear. For good braking performance, replace the brake padswith the same type pads as the originals.
N00941700076
Brake hoses and tubing should be checkedfor: Severe surface cracking, scuffing or worn spots. If the fabric casing of the hose is showing through any cracks or worn spotsin the rubber hose cover, the hose should be replaced. The brakes can fail if the hose wears through. Improper installation may cause twisting, or wheel, tire or chassis interference.
N00941800077
Check the following parts for damage and grease leaks: Ball joint boots of the front suspension and steering linkage Bellows on both ends of the drive shaft
N00942200094
The best way to keep carbon monoxide gas from entering inside your vehicle is to have the engine exhaust system properly serviced. Have a competent mechanic inspect the com-plete exhaust system and nearby body areas for broken, damaged, deteriorated, or mispo- sitioned parts if you notice any of the follow-ing: A change in the sound of the exhaust sys- tem The smell of exhaust fumes inside the vehicle
The underside or rear of the vehicle is damaged
Also check the exhaust system each time the vehicle is raised for lubrication, oil changes, or required service. Any open seams or looseconnections could let dangerous exhaust fumes seep into the luggage compartment and passenger compartments. Check for holes or exhaust gas leaks caused by corrosion or damage. Check the joints and connections for looseness or exhaust gas leaks. Check the rubber hangers and brackets for damage.
N00942500101
The hood lock release mechanism and hood safety catch should be checked, cleaned, and oiled when needed for easy movement and tostop rust and wear. Use Multipurpose Grease NLGI Grade 2 sparingly for all sliding parts of the hood latch and release lever. Work thegrease into the hood lock mechanism until all the movable surfaces are covered.

Salt and other chemicals spread on winter roads in some geographical areas can have a detrimental effect on the vehicle underbody.
You should flush the underbody with a high pressure hose every time you wash the out- side of your vehicle. Take special care to remove mud or otherdebris which could trap and hold salt and moisture. After washing your vehicle, wipe off allwaterdrops from the rubber parts around the doors to prevent the doors from freezing.
N00946000234
Wax your vehicle once or twice a year, or when water does not bead up on the paint.Use a soft cloth to put a small amount of wax on the painted surfaces. After the wax has dried, polish with a dry soft cloth.Do not wax your vehicle in direct sunlight. You should wax when the painted surfaces are cool.
N00946100046
If painted surfaces have been severely dam-aged and lost their original luster and color tone, polish the surface lightly with a fine polishing compound. Avoid limiting yourpolishing to the damaged surface only; polish a somewhat wider area, moving the polishing cloth in one direction. After polishing, flushthe compound from the surface and apply a coat of wax to regain a beautiful luster.
Some hot water washing equipment uses high pressure and heat to clean your vehicle. Because hot water can damage plastics parts and seep inside your vehicle, make sure you do the following when using such equip-ment:• Keep the washing nozzle at least 28 inches(70 cm) away from the vehicle body.• When washing around the door glass, holdthe nozzle at a distance of more than 28 inches (70 cm) and at a right angle to the glass surface.
Make sure to do the following when using an automatic car wash, with help from eitherthis manual or the car wash operator, to avoid damaging your vehicle:• Fold the outside rearview mirrors.• Remove the antenna.• Tape the wiper arm assembly.• If your vehicle is equipped with a rearspoiler or roof rails, check with the car wash operator before using the car wash.• If your vehicle is equipped with the rainsensor wipers, place the wiper switch leverin the “OFF” position to deactivate the rain sensor.
During cold weather
CAUTION
NOTE
When the door is frozen, opening it by force may tear off or crack the rubber gasket installed around the door. Pour warm water to melt the ice. Be sure to thoroughly wipeoff the water after opening the door. To pre- vent freezing of the weatherstripping on the doors, hood, etc., treat with silicone lubri-cant.
Waxing
CAUTION Waxes containing high abrasive compounds should not be used. These waxes remove rust and stain effectively from the paintwork, but are harmful to the finish of the paint, because they also remove paint/clearcoat.They are also harmful to other glossy sur- faces such as the grille, trim, moldings, etc. Do not use gasoline, benzine, kerosene or paint thinners to remove road tar or other dirt from the vehicle surface. Do not put wax on the areas having black matte coating because it can cause unevendiscoloration, patches, blurs, etc. If these get wax on them, wipe the wax off right away with a soft cloth and warm water.
