Be sure all four tires and wheels are the same size and type. When it is necessary to replace any of the tires or wheels, replace all four. All tires should be rotated before the wear difference between the front and rear tires is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wear between tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” on page 9-19. Check the tire inflation pressure regularly.
N00517500275
Overuse of the brake can cause weakening, resulting in poor brake response and prema- ture wear of the brake pads. When driving down a long or steep hill, use engine braking by downshifting.
CAUTION Always use tires of the same size, type, and brand that have no wear differences. Usingtires of different size, type, brands or degree of wear, will increase the differential oil tem- perature and result in possible damage to thedriving system. Further, the drive train will be subject to excessive loading, possibly leading to oil leakage, component seizure, orother serious failures.
To w i n g
CAUTION Do not tow 4-wheel drive vehicles with the front or rear wheels on the ground (Type Aor Type B) as illustrated. This could result in damage to the drivetrain, or unstable towing. If you tow 4-wheel dr
ive vehicles, use Type
C or Type D equipment. Even in “2WD” mode, the vehicle cannot be towed with the front or the rear wheels on the ground.
Jacking up a 4-wheel drive vehicle
WA R N I N G Do not crank the engine while jacking up the vehicle. The tire on the ground may turn and the vehicle may roll off the jack.
Service brake Brake pedal
WA R N I N G Do not leave any objects near the brake pedal or let a floor mat slide under it; doing so could prevent the full pedal stroke that would be necessary in anemergency. Make sure that the pedal can be operated freely at all times. Make sure the floor mat is securely held in place.

Warning display type 1 Warning display type 2 If there is a malfunction in the system, the anti-lock braking system warning light willcome on and the warning display will appear on the information screen in the multi-infor- mation display.Under normal conditions, the ABS warning light only comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or the opera-tion mode is put in ON and goes off a few seconds later.
N00531700574
Avoid hard braking and high-speed driv- ing. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Test the system by restarting the engine and driving at a speed of about 12 mph(20 km/h) or higher. If the warning light/display then remains off during driving, there is no abnormalcondition. However, if the warning light/display do not disappear, or if they come on againwhen the vehicle is driven, have the vehi- cle checked by an authorized MITSUBISHI MOTORS dealer or repairfacility of your choice as soon as possible.
CAUTION The anti-lock braking system cannot prevent accidents. It is your responsibility to take safety precautions and to drive carefully. To prevent failure of the anti-lock braking system, be sure all 4 wheels and tires are the same size and the same type.NOTE
A whining sound is emitted from the engine compartment when dr
iving immediately
after starting the engine. These are the nor- mal sounds the anti-lock braking systemmakes when performing a self-check. It does not indicate a malfunction. The anti-lock braking system can be used after the vehicle has reached a speed over approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). It stopsworking when the vehicle slows below 3 mph (5 km/h).

WA R N I N GDo not stop the engine while the vehicle is moving. Stopping the engine would makethe steering wheel extremely hard to turn, possibly resulting in an accident.NOTE
During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parking space), a protection function may be acti-vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This function will make the steering wheel gradually harder to turn. Inthis event, limit your tu
rning of the steering
wheel for a while. When the system has cooled down, the steering effort will return to normal. If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with the headlights on, the headlights may become dim. This behavioris not abnormal. The headlights will return to their original brightness after a short while.
Electric power steering system warning display
CAUTION If the warning display appears while the engine is running, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer ora repair facility of your choice as soon as possible. It may become harder to turn the steering wheel.
Active stability control (ASC)
CAUTION Do not over-rely on the ASC. Even the ASC cannot prevent the natural laws of physics from acting on the vehicle. This system, like any other system, has limits and cannot helpyou to maintain traction and control of the vehicle in all circumstances. Reckless driv- ing can lead to accidents. It is the driver’sresponsibillty to drive carefully, This means taking into account the traffic, road and envi- ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four wheels. Otherwise, the ASC may not work properly.

N00849700273
1. Lift up the luggage floor board. 2. To remove the spare tire, remove theinstallation clamp (A) by turning it coun-terclockwise.
N00849801460
1. On vehicles with wheel covers, firstremove the covers (refer to “Wheel cov-ers” on page 8-11). Then, loosen the wheel nuts with the wheel nut wrench. Do not remove the wheel nuts yet.
Driving with an improperly inflated tire can cause an accident. If you have no choice but to drive with an under-inflated tire, keep your speed down and avoid sudden steering or braking, if possible
. Inflate the tire to the
correct pressure as soon as possible. Refer to “Tire inflation pressures” on page 9-17. The compact spare tire should be used only temporarily. While the compact spare tire is being used, the tire pressure monitoring sys-tem will not function properly. Have the tire replaced or repaired at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facilityof your choice as soon as possible. Do not go over 50 mph (80 km/h) when driv- ing with the compact spare tire. Avoid sudden starting and braking when driving with the compact spare tire. Do not drive through automatic car washes and over obstacles that could possibly dam- age the underside of your vehicle. Because the compact spare tire is smaller than theoriginal tire, there is less clearance between the ground and your vehicle. Because the compact spare tire is designed only for your vehicle, do not use it on any other vehicle. Do not put the compact spare tire on a differ- ent wheel, and do not put standard tires, snow tires, wheel covers or trim rings on the compact spare wheel. Otherwise, you coulddamage these parts or other parts on your vehicle.CAUTION
Do not use tire chains with your compact spare tire. Using a chain could cause damage to your vehicle and loss of the chains.

CAUTION Driving with an improperly inflated tire can cause an accident. If you have no choice but to drive with an under-inflated tire, keep your speed down and avoid sudden steering or braking, if possible
. Inflate the tire to the
correct pressure as soon as possible. Refer to “Tire inflation pressures” on page 9-17. After changing the tire and driving the vehi- cle about 620 miles (1,000 km), retighten the wheel nuts to make sure that they have notcome loose. If the steering wheel vibrates when driving after changing the tire, have the tire checked for balance at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice. Do not mix one type of tire with another or use a different size from the one listed. This would cause early wear and poor handling.

under controlled conditions on speci- fied government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete. A tire marked C may have poor traction perfor- mance. The temperature grades are A (the highest), B and C, representing the tire’s resistance to the generation ofheat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled condi- tions on a specified indoor laboratorytest wheel. Sustained high tempera- ture can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, andexcessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure. The grade C cor- responds to a level of performancewhich all passenger car tires must meet under the Federal Motor Vehi- cle Safety Standard No. 109. Grades B and A represent higher levels of performance on the laboratory testwheel than the minimum required by law.
N00939301939
Proper tire inflation pressure is essential for the safe and satisfactory operation of yourvehicle. The wrong tire pressure will cause problems in three major areas: Safety Too little pressure increases flexing in thetire and can cause tire failure. Too muchpressure can cause a tire to lose its ability to cushion shock. Objects on the road and potholes could then cause tire damage thatmay result in tire failure. Economy The wrong tire pressure can cause unevenwear patterns in the tire tread. These abnormal wear patterns will reduce the tread life, and the tire will have to bereplaced sooner. Too little pressure also makes it harder for the tire to roll, and this uses up more fuel. Ride comfort and vehicle stability The superior riding experience built into your vehicle partly depends on the correcttire pressure. Too much pressure gives an uncomfortable and jarring ride. Too little pressure feels as if your vehicle is slow torespond. Unequal tire pressures can make steering your vehicle uneven and unpredictable.
The tire pressure for your vehicle under nor- mal driving conditions is listed on the placard attached to the driver’s door sill. (Refer to “Tire and loading information plac-ard” on page 11-2.) The recommended infl
ation pressures under
normal driving conditions should be used forthe tires listed below. Tire pressures should be checked, and adjusted if necessary, at least once a month. Pressures should be checked more oftenwhenever weather temperatures change severely, because tire pressures change with outdoor temperatures. The pressures listedare always “cold inflation pressure”. Cold inflation pressure is measured after the vehicle has been parked for at least threehours or is driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) after having been parked for three hours.
