It is operated as electric vehicle in the EVdrive mode using the electrical power storedin the drive battery,*

However, EV drive mode is can-celled depending on the drive batterylevel, vehicle speed, and air conditioneroperating conditions. Pay attention to thefollowing points:•Check the EV cruising range in theinformation screen. Refer to “EV cruis-ing range display/Total cruising rangedisplay” on page 6-13.•Drive your vehicle at moderate speedsavoiding quick acceleration/decelera-tion. Repeated quick acceleration/decel-eration causes the drive battery level todecrease quickly, which extremelyreduces the EV cruising range.
zThe vehicle is driven by the motors onlyusing the electricity generated by theengine. This mode is used when the drivebattery level is low, at quick acceleration,or when power is required like climbinguphill. zThe vehicle is driven by the power of theengine, assisted by motors. This mode isused during high-speed driving with bet-ter engine efficiency.
Plug-in Hybrid EV System Main features *1:If there is a remaining amount in thedrive battery, it is actively driven in theEV drive mode. The cruising range var-ies depending on the remaining charge inthe drive battery, vehicle speed, and airconditioner operating conditions.

Motion energy is converted into electric energy using the motor as a power generator.Then a braking force generates and converted electric energy will be charged to the drive battery.zIf you lift your foot off the accelerator pedal during driving, a braking force that equivalent to engine braking of a combusti

will be generated. Also, if you shift the select position into “B” (BRAKE) from “D” (DRIVE), effectiveness of the regenerative
braking is get-
ting strong. Shift the selector lever into “B” (
BRAKE) position according to the driving condition.
zRegenerative brake force increases with the foot brake force when the brake pedal is depressed.zIf a problem occurs in the Plug-in hybrid EV system, or if the
ABS and/or the ASC have been activated, the regenerative braking
will be
restricted. The foot brake will still operate.

zEven when the vehicle is driving in EVdrive mode, it may be automaticallychanged to series hybrid mode or parallelhybrid mode in the following cases:•The plug-in hybrid EV system is too hotor too cold.
•Quick acceleration is applied.•The air conditioner is operating.•The accelerator pedal is depressed hardon an uphill road or expressway.•In cold weather•The vehicle has not been refueled for along time.•The drive battery level is low.
In addition to the above, there are morecases where EV drive mode is automati-cally changed to series or parallel hybridmode.zEven while the vehicle is stopped, theengine may automatically be started in thefollowing cases:•The drive battery level is low.

zIf the warning display appears, refuel assoon as possible.If the vehicle is runs out of fuel, theengine will not start even in a situationneed to be generated electricity, the fol-lowing conditions will occur.•The driving performance falls (sinceonly the electrical power stored in thedrive battery can be used for the driv-ing).•The heating performance cannot beavailable (except vehicles with electricheater).•The effectiveness of the heater is insuffi-cient (vehicles with electric heater).•The catalytic converter may be damageddue to excessive high temperature.

zIt is the battery to operate the motor andthe air conditioning.In addition to the drive battery, OutlanderPHEV has the auxiliary battery to operatelamps, wipers, etc.zCompact, light-weight lithium ion batterywith high energy density is used for thedrive battery.zThe drive battery has the following char-acteristics.Please read this carefully paying attentionto the following:zThe same as ordinary lithium-ion batter-ies, the battery capacity of the drive bat-tery gradually reduces with time, resultingin reduced cruising range. Depending onthe usage conditions, such as frequentquick acceleration/deceleration,extremely hot weather, storing the vehiclein high ambient temperatures, etc., therate of battery capacity drop will increase.

your vehicle, the fuel in the fuel tank maynot be used for a long time and stay in thetank, resulting in deterioration of the fuelquality. As this may af
fect the engine and
fuel system parts, observe the followinginstructions:•Run the engine by pressing the batterycharge switch at least once in 3 months.Refer to “Battery charge switch” on page7-23.• Refuel 20 litres or more of fuel every 6months (to make the total refueling amountin 6 months be 20 litres or more).
zIf refueling of the above
amount is not possi-
ble due to a high fuel level because the vehi-cle has not been used for a long time or forsome other reason, consult a MITSUBISHIMOTORS Authorised Service Point.

zThe performance may be changed due tothe outside temperature.At low temperature, in particular, the EVcruising range is short and the chargingtime is long, compared to operation atnormal temperature.zThe battery is gradually discharged with-out use and the battery charge is lowered.zIt is not necessary to consume the batterycompletely before charging.zIf your vehicle is not used for a long time,check the drive battery level display every3 months.If the drive battery level display shows 0,charge the battery until some indicationappears. Alternately, put the operationmode of the power switch in “ON” to startthe engine automatically, wait for theengine to stop automatically, then put theoperation mode of the power switch in“OFF”.zMitsubishi Motors collects drive batteries.If you scrap your vehicle, please consult aMitsubishi Motors Authorised ServicePoint.

zEven if the charge level is the same, theEV cruising range may vary depending ondriving conditions. Since driving at highspeed or climbing on a hill requires higherconsumption of the drive battery thanusual, the EV cruising range is shortened.zSince the air conditioning (cooling orheating) consumes power of the drive bat-tery, its operation results in a shorter EVcruising range. Maintain an appropriatetemperature.zPut the selector lever to “B” (BRAKE)position according to the road condition.To c h a rg e t h e d r i v e b a t t e r y w i t h a p p r o p r i -ate use of the regenerative brake, it can beincreased the EV cruising range.

The Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System(AVAS) is device that uses sound to alertpedestrians of the presence of the vehicle.The system operates when the vehicle speedis about 35 km/h or less and the engine is notrunning.Refer to “Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System(AVAS)” on page 7-24.

A crash or impact significant enough torequire an emergency response for conven-tional vehicles would also require the sameresponse for Outlander PHEV.Also follow the instructions described belowto avoid severe burns and electrical shock thatmay result in serious injury or death.

zNever touch high-voltage wiring, connec-tors, and other high-vol
tage parts, such as
the inverter unit and drive battery. Anelectric shock may occur if exposed elec-tric wires are visible when viewed frominside or outside of
your vehicle. For their

on page 2-7.zIf the vehicle receives a strong impact tothe floor while driving, stop the vehicle ina safe place and
check the floor.
zNever start the plug-in hybrid EV systemif you found the leak
of a liquid (except
water of the air conditioner) while check-ing the outside of the vehicle because thereis possibility the fuel system has beendamaged and causing of fire or exploding.In such case, immediately contact yourMITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Ser-vice Point.WA R N I N G
zLeaks or damage to the drive battery mayresult in a fire. If you discover them, con-tact emergency services immediately.Since the fluid leak may be lithium man-ganite from the Lithium-ion battery, nevertouch any fluid leaking from the inside oroutside of the vehicle. If the fluid contactsyour skin or eyes, wash
it off immediately
with a large amount of water and receiveimmediate medical attention to help avoidserious injury.zIf you are unable to safely assess the vehi-cle due to vehicle damage, do not touchthe vehicle. Leave the vehicle and contactemergency services. Advise emergencyresponders that this is a Plug-in Hybridvehicle.zIf a fire occurs in this vehicle, leave thevehicle as soon as possible and contactemergency services. Do not attempt toextinguish a fire by yourself. If the fireinvolves a lithium-ion battery, it willrequire large, sustained volumes of waterfor extinguishment. Using a small amountof water or the incorrect fire extinguishercan result in serious injury or death fromelectrical shock.zWhen you leave the vehicle, if possible,open the windows, doors and tailgate toprevent accumulation of poisonous/com-bustible gasses. This will
also assist in the

zAs with any vehicle fire, the byproducts ofcombustion can be toxic. Do not inhalesmoke, vapors, or gas from the vehicle.Move to a safe distance upwind and uphillfrom the vehicle fire and out of the way ofany oncoming traffic while awaiting thearrival of emergency responders.zIf you detect leaking fluids, sparks, smoke,flames, gurgling, popping or hissing noisesoriginating from the high voltage batterycompartment, contact emergency servicesimmediately. This may result in a fire.zPhysical damage to the vehicle or highvoltage battery may result in immediate ordelayed release of toxic and/or flammablegases and fire.zIf your vehicle needs to be towed, trans-port the vehicle on a
flatbed truck or tow
the vehicle with all wheels off the ground.If the any wheels are on the ground whentowing, this may cause damage to the elec-tric motors. When performing inspection and mainte-nance, be careful in the following points.

When an electric leakage occurs or the EV charging cable malfunctionsStop using the EV charging cable immediately and contact a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Author-ised Service Point.When the EV charging cable malfunctionsStop using the EV charging cable immediately and contact a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Author-ised Service Point.If the control box indicator lamp does not illuminate after connecting the charging cable plug to the outlet, check the circuit breaker for the outlet. If the breaker has tripped, the circuit may not be suitable for use with EV charging cable. You should have a licensed electrician inspect and repair the electrical circuit. If the breaker is not tripped, Stop using the EV charging cable and contact a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorised Service Point.

zCustomize (function setting change)The function setting of the keyless opera-tion system, security alarm, outside rear-view mirror, operation mode of the powerswitch, air conditioning, lamps and wind-screen wipers can be changed by MIT-SUBISHI Remote Control.
Devices that support wireless LAN arerequired to communicate with the vehicleusing the MITSUBISHI Remote Control.Also, an SSID* (A) and password (B) arerequired to connect a wireless LAN device tothe vehicle. The SSID and password comewith the key at the time of your purchase ofthe vehicle.

zThe electric heater is required to activate thereservation functions of

The cabin temperature may quicklyrise in sunshine, which poses a risk of heatstroke and dehydration. In cold weather,on the other hand, the cabin temperaturemay quickly drop. Either of which couldlead to death in the worst case.zThe cooling fan in

ment may operate automatically whencharging or when operating air condi-tioner. Do not bring you
