If your vehicle becomes stuck in sand, mud or snow
1. Slowly press down on the accelerator pedal to
get your vehicle moving again. For an all-
wheel drive vehicle, set the drive mode-sel
ector to the “4WD AUTO” or “4WD LOCK”
position and then slowly press down on the
accelerator pedal to get your vehicle moving.
2. If there is nothing to stop your tires from sli
pping, rock your vehicle back and forth to free
it.
P. 8-13
WA R N I N G When trying to rock your vehicle out of a
stuck position, make sure that there are no
people nearby. The rocking motion may cau
se the vehicle to
suddenly lurch forward or backward, possibly injuring bystanders. Avoid revving the engine or spinning the
wheels. Prolonged efforts to free a stuck ve
hicle may result in overheating and transa
xle failure.
If your vehicle is still stuck after se
veral rocking attempts, call for help.

When the warning display or the warn- ing display appears on the information screen in the multi-information display while youare driving, there could be a malfunction in the CVT.
N00560600054
This position locks the transmission to pre- vent the vehicle from moving. The engine can be started from the “P” (PARK) position.
NOTE
While the selector lever position display is blinking, a buzzer will sound intermittently.
Warning display
CAUTION If a malfunction occurs in the CVT while driving, the warning display or the warning display will appear on the informa- tion screen in the multi-information display. In this case, follow these procedures: [When warning display is showing] The continuously variable transmission (CVT) fluid is overheating. The engine con-trol may activate to lower the CVT fluid tem- perature, causing the engine revolutions and vehicle speed to decrease, In this case, takeone of the following procedures.• Slow down your vehicle.• Stop your vehicle in a safe place, put theselector lever in the “P” (PARK) position, and open the engine hood with the engine running to allow the engine to cool down.
After a while, confirm that the warning display is no longer showing. It is safe to continue driving if the display is no longer showing. If the warning display remains orflashes frequently, have your vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice. [When warning display is showing] It may be that there is something unusual happening in the CVT, causing a safety device to activate. Have your vehicleinspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as possible.

To gain extra acceleration in “D” (DRIVE) position (when passing another vehicle) push the accelerator to the floor. The CVT will automatically downshift.
For short waiting periods, such as at traffic lights, the vehicle can be left in selector leverposition and held stationary with the service brake. For longer waiting periods with the enginerunning, place the selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position and apply the parking brake, while holding the vehicle stationarywith the service brake. Prior to moving off after having stopped the vehicle, make sure that the selector lever is in“D” (DRIVE) position or Sports mode posi- tion.
Operation of the CVT
CAUTION Before selecting a position with the engine running and the vehicle stationary, firmly depress the brake pedal to prevent the vehi- cle from creeping. The vehicle will begin to move as soon as the CVT is engaged, especially when the engine speed or idle speed is high, or with the airconditioning operating. Do not release the brake pedal until you are ready to drive away. Depress the brake pedal
with the right foot at
all times.Using the left foot could cause driver move- ment delay in case of an emergency. To prevent sudden acceleration, never run the engine at high rpms when shifting from the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL).Type 1 Type 2
Operating the accelerator pedal while the other foot is resting on the brake pedal will affect braking efficiency and may cause pre- mature wear of brake pads. Use the selector lever in the correct shift position in accordance with driving condi- tions.Never coast downhill backward in the driv- ing shift position {“D” (DRIVE) or sport mode} or coast forward in the “R”(REVERSE) position. Engine stopping and increased brake pedal and steering effort could lead to an accident. Do not rev the engine with the brake pedal pressed when the vehicle is stationary. This can damage the CVT. Also, when you depress the accelerator pedal while holding down the brake pedal with theselector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) position, the engine revolutions may not rise as high as when performing the same operation withthe selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
Passing acceleration
CAUTION
NOTE
In sports mode, downshifts do not take place when the accelerator is depressed all the way to the floor.
Waiting
CAUTION To avoid transmission overheating, never try to keep your vehicle stationary on a hill by using the accelerator pedal. Always apply the parking brake and/or service brake. Do not rev the engine unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary. Unexpected acceler-ation may occur if the selector lever is in a position other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL).

Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD LOCK” or “LOCK” and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start. Keep the pressure on the accelerator pedal as constantas possible, and drive at low speed.
Your vehicle may not provide sufficient hill climbing ability and engine braking on steepslope. Avoid driving on steep slopes even
though the vehicle is an 4-wheel drive vehi- cle.

If the electrical circuits become wet, furtheroperation of the vehicle will be impossible; therefore, avoid driving through water unless absolutely necessary. If driving through wateris unavoidable, use the following procedure: Check the depth of the water and the terrain before attempting to drive through it. Drive slowly to avoid creating excessive water splashing.
Driving on sandy or muddy roads
CAUTION Do not force the vehicle or drive recklessly on sandy surfaces. In comparison with nor- mal road surfaces, the engine and otherdrive-system components are put under excessive strain when driving on such a sur- face. This could lead to accidents. If any of the following conditions occur while the vehicle is being driven, immedi-ately park your vehicle in a safe place and follow these procedures:• If the engine coolant temperature display
flashes on the information screen in the multi-information display or the engine power drops suddenly. Refer to “Engine overheating” on page 8-4.• If the “ ” warning display and “SLOW DOWN” or the “ ” warning display and “SERVICE REQUIRED” appear on the information screen in the multi-information display.Refer to “Warning display” on page 5-52.
WA R N I N G When attempting to rock your vehicle out of a stuck position, be sure that the area around the vehicle is clear of people and physical objects. The rocking motion may cause the vehicle to
suddenly launch for-
ward/backward, causing injury or dam- age to nearby people or objects.NOTE
Avoid sudden braking, sudden acceleration and sharp turning; such operations could result in the vehicle becoming stuck. If the vehicle becomes stuck in sandy or muddy roads, it can often be moved with a rocking motion. Move the gearshift leveralternately between the 1st and “R” (Reverse) positions (M/T), the “D” (DRIVE) and “R” (REVERSE) positions (CVT), whilepressing lightly on the accelerator pedal. Driving on rough road can cause rust on the vehicle; wash the vehicle thoroughly as soon as possible after such use.
Climbing/descending sharp grades
Driving through water
CAUTION Never drive through water that is deep enough to cover wheel hubs, axles or exhaust pipe. Do not change the gearshift lever posi-tion (M/T) or the selector lever position (CVT) while driving through water. Frequent driving through water canadversely affect the life span of the vehicle; consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice and take the necessary measures to prepare, inspect, and repair the vehicle.

The anti-lock braking system and brake force distribution function may not work, so hard braking could make the vehicle unstable. Avoid hard braking and high-speed driving.Stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact an authorized MITSUBISHI MOTORS dealer or repair facility of your choice.
N00529200077
After driving on snow or icy roads, removeany snow and ice which may have be left around the wheels. On vehicles that have an anti-lock braking system, be careful not todamage the wheel speed sensors (A) or the cables located at each wheel.
N00568400061
The power steering system operates while the engine is running. It helps reduce the effortneeded to turn the steering wheel. The power steering system has mechanical steering capability in case the power assist is
lost. If the power assist is lost for some rea- son, you will still be able to steer your vehi- cle, but you will notice it takes much more effort to steer. If this happens, have your vehi-cle inspected at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
NOTE
The anti-lock braking system warning light and brake warning light
illuminate at the
same time and the warning displays appear alternately on the information screen in the multi-information display.
After driving on icy roads
Electric power steering sys- tem (EPS) FrontRear
WA R N I N G Do not stop the engine while the vehicle is moving. Stopping the engine would makethe steering wheel extremely hard to turn, possibly resulting in an accident.NOTE
During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parking space), a protection function may be acti-vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This function will make the steering wheel gradually harder to turn. Inthis event, limit your turning of the steering wheel for a while. When the system has cooled down, the steering effort will return to normal. If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with the headlights on, the headlights may become dim. This behavioris not abnormal. The headlights will return to their original brightness after a short while.

If an abnormal condition occurs in the sys- tem, the following display/indicator will turnon. Warning display type 1 Warning display type 2
CAUTION When display/indicator blinks, ASC is operating, which means that the road is slip- pery or that your vehicle’s wheels are begin- ning to slip. If this happens, drive slowerwith less accelerator input. If the temperature in the braking system con- tinues to increase due to continuous brake control on a slippery road surface, the display/indicator will blink. To prevent the brake system from overheating, the brakecontrol of the traction control function will be temporarily suspended. The engine control of the traction controlfunction and normal brake operation will not be affected. Park your vehicle in a safe place. When the temperature in the braking system has come down, the display/indicator will be turned off and the traction control function will start operating again.NOTE
The display/indicator may turn on when you start the engine. This means that the bat- tery voltage momentarily dropped when the engine was started. It does not indicate a malfunction, provided that the display goesout immediately.
When a compact spare tire has been put on your vehicle, the gripping ability of the tire will be lower, making it more likely that the display/indicator will blink.

Tire pressure monitoring system
Features and controls 5-77
5
Type 1 Type 2Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the inflation pressure recom-mended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label. (If your vehicle has tires of a different sizethan the size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label, you should determine the proper tire inflation pressurefor those tires.) As an added safety feature, your vehicle has been equipped with a ti
re pressure monitoring
system (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire
pressure telltale when one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated. Accordingly, when the low tire pressure tell- tale illuminates, you should stop and checkyour tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pres
sure. Driving on a sig-
nificantly under-inflated tire causes the tire tooverheat and can lead to tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiency and tire tread life, and may affect the vehi-cle’s handling and stopping ability. Pleasenote that the TPMS is not a substitute for proper tire maintenance, and it is the driver’s responsibility to maintain correct tire pres-sure, even if under-inflation has not reached the level to trigger illumination of the TPMS low tire pressure telltale. Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate when the system is not operating properly. The TPMS malfunction indicator is combinedwith the low tire pressure telltale. When the system detects a malfunction, the telltale will flash for approximately one min-ute and then remain continuously illuminated. This sequence will continue upon subsequent vehicle start-ups as long as the malfunctionexists. When the malfunction indicator is illumi- nated, the system may not be able to detect orsignal low tire pressure as intended.
CAUTION If the tire pressure monitoring system warn- ing light does not illuminate when the igni- tion switch is turned to the “ON” position or the operation mode is put in ON, it means that the tire pressure monitoring system isnot working properly. Have the system inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. In such situations,
a malfunctioning of the
system may be preventing the monitoring of the tire pressure. Avoid sudden braking, sharp turning and high-speed driving. If a malfunction is detected in the tire pres- sure monitoring system, the tire pressure monitoring system warning light will blink for approximately 1 minute and then remaincontinuously illuminated. The warning light will issue further warnings each time the engine is restarted as long as the malfunctionexists. Check to see whether the warning light goes off after few minutes driving. If it then goes off during driving, there is no problem. However, if the warning light does not gooff, or if it blinks again when the engine is restarted, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. In such situations,
a malfunctioning of the
system may be preventing the monitoring ofthe tire pressure. For safety reasons, when the warning light appears while driving, avoid sudden braking, sharp turning andhigh-speed driving.
NOTE
In addition, the warning display is displayed on the information screen in the multi-infor- mation display.

When the average speed is being dis- played, if you hold down the multi-infor- mation meter switch, these calculationswill be reset to zero.
CAUTION If the engine is overheating, “ ” will blink. In this case, the bar graph is on the red zone. Immediately park the vehicle in a safe place and take the required measures. Refer to“Engine overheating” on page 8-4.
Driving range display
NOTE
The driving range is determined based on the fuel consumption data. This may vary depending on the driving conditions and hab-its. Treat the distance displayed as just a rough guideline. When you refuel, the driving range display is updated. However, if you only add a small amount of fuel, the correct value will not be displayed. Fill to a full tank whenever possible. When your vehicle is stopped on an extremely steep hill, the driving range valuemay, change. This is due to the movement of fuel in the tank and does not indicate any breakdown.
The display setting can be changed to the preferred units (miles or km). Refer to “Changing the function settings (With ignition switch or operation mode in ON)” on page 5-98.
