After operating the vehicle in rough road con- ditions, be sure to perform the following inspection and maintenance procedures: Check that the vehicle has not been dam- aged by rocks, gravel, etc. Carefully wash the vehicle with water. Drive the vehicle slowly while lightlydepressing the brake pedal in order to dry out the brakes. If the brakes still do not function properly, co
ntact an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice as soon as possible to have the brakes checked. Remove the insects, dried grass, etc. clog- ging the radiator core.
After driving through water, check the engine, transaxle and differential oil. If the oil or grease is milky or cloudy because of water contamination, it mustbe replaced with new oil. Check the inside of the vehicle. If water entry is found, dry the carpet etc. Inspect the headlights. If water is in the headlight housing, have it drained at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice. Have an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer replace grease in the wheel bear- ings.

Since the driving torque can be applied to thefour wheels, the driving performance of thevehicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is greatly affected by the condition of the tires. Pay close attention to the tires. Install only the specified tires on all wheels. Refer to “Tires and wheels” onpage 11-5.
Be sure all four tires and wheels are the same size and type. When it is necessary to replace any of the tires or wheels, replace all four. All tires should be rotated before the wear difference between the front and rear tires is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wear between tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” on page 9-19. Check the tire inflation pressure regularly.
After driving through water, apply the brakes to be sure they are functioning properly. If the brakes are wet and not functioning prop- erly, dry them out by driving slowly while lightly depressing the brake pedal. Inspecteach part of the vehicle carefully.
Inspection and maintenance following rough road opera-tion
CAUTION
Cautions on the handling of 4-wheel drive vehicles Tires and wheels
CAUTION Always use tires of the same size, type, and brand that have no wear differences. Usingtires of different size, type, brands or degree of wear, will increase the differential oil tem- perature and result in possible damage to thedriving system. Further, the drive train will be subject to excessive loading, possibly leading to oil leakage, component seizure, orother serious failures.

Before changing lanes, check your mir- rors and use your turn-signal light. While driving, watch the behavior of other drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Always obey applicable laws and regula- tions. Be a polite and alert driver. Always leave room for unexpected events, such assudden braking. If you plan to drive in another country, obey their vehicle registration laws andmake sure you will be able to get the rightfuel.

Check the battery. At the same time, check the terminals and wiring. During extremely cold weather, the battery will not be as strong. Also, the battery powerlevel may drop because more power is used for cold starting and driving. Before driving the vehicle, check to see ifthe engine runs at the proper speed and if the headlights are as bright as normally. Charge or replace the battery if necessary.During extreme cold weather, it is possi- ble that a very low battery could freeze.
Warm the engine sufficiently. After start- ing the engine, allow a short warm-up time to distribute oil to all cylinders. Then drive your vehicle slowly. Stay at low speeds at first so that the transaxle, transfer case and rear axle oil have time to spread to all the lubricationpoints. Manual transaxle can be harder to shift in cold weather conditions. This is normaland shifting will get easier as the transaxle warms up. Check the engine antifreeze. If there is not enough coolant because of a leak or from engine overheating, add Mitsubishi Motors Genuine Super LongLife Coolant Premium or equivalent. Please read this section in conjunction with the “Engine coolant” on page 9-7.

All the parts of the brake system are criticalto safety. Have the vehicle serviced by anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice at regular inter- vals according to the “WARRANTY ANDMAINTENANCE MANUAL”. Check the brake system while driving at a low speed immediately after starting, espe- cially when the brakes are wet, to confirm they work normally.A film of water can be formed on the brake discs and prevent normal braking after driv- ing in heavy rain or through large puddles, orafter the vehicle is wash
ed. If this occurs, dry
the brakes out by driving slowly while lightly depressing the brake pedal.
Driving during cold weather
WA R N I N G The battery gives off explosive hydrogen gas. Any spark or flame can cause the bat- tery to explode, which could cause serious injury or death. Always wear protective clothes and a facemask when working with your battery, or let a skilled mechanic do it.
WA R N I N G Never open the radiator cap when the radiator is hot. You could be seriously burned.

If you drive your vehicle with a low battery charge after the engine has been started by using jumper cables, the engine may misfire. This can cause the anti-lock braking systemwarning light to blink on and off. This is only due to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap-pens, fully charge the battery and ensure the charging system is operating properly.
N00836500352
When the engine is overheating, the informa-tion screen in the multi-information display
will be interrupted and the engine coolant temperature warning display will appear. Also “ ” blink. If this happens: 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers.2. With the engine still running, carefully raise the engine hood to vent the engine compartment.3. Check that the cooling fan is running. Ifthe fan is not turning, stop the engine immediately and contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice for assistance. 4. If you see steam or spray coming from under the hood, turn off the engine. 5. If you do not see steam or spray comingfrom under the hood, leave the engine on until the bar graph for the engine coolant temperature warning display on the multi-information display goes down. When it is in the middle of the normal zone, you can start driving again. If the bar graphstays in the red zone, turn off the engine.
6. When you do not see any more steam or spray, open the hood. Look for obvious leaks, such as a split radiator hose. Be careful as components will be hot. Anyleak source must be repaired. 7. If there is no obvious leak source, check the coolant level in the engine coolantreserve tank. If there is none, or if it is too low, slowly add coolant. 8. If the engine coolant reserve tank needscoolant, you will probably also need to add coolant to the radiator. Do not loosen or remove the radiator cap until the enginehas cooled down.
Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro- sive diluted sulfuric acid. If electrolyte comes in contact with your hands, eyes, clothes, or the painted surface of your vehicle, thoroughly flush with water. Ifelectrolyte gets in your eyes, flush them immediately and thoroughly with water, and get prompt medical attention. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working near the battery. Keep the battery out of the reach of chil- dren.

The tools and jack are stowed in the luggagecompartment.
Before removing the jack, lift up the luggage floor board.
WA R N I N G Removing the radiator cap could scald you with escaping hot water or steam. When checking the radiator level, cover the cap with a cloth before trying to remove it. Turn it slowly counterclock-wise, without pressing down, to the first notch. The pressure in the system will then be let out. When the pressure is COM-PLETELY LET OUT, press down and keep turning the cap counterclockwise until it comes off.

It is normal for an engi
ne to use oil. You may
need to add oil between the recommended oilchange intervals. Before starting the engine, check the engine oil level. Refill if necessary. To check the oil level, remove the dipstick, wipe it off, and gently reinsert it all the way. Slowly pull the dipstick straight out andcheck the oil level by checking the upper sur- face of the dipstick. Th
e oil level must not go
above the line on the dipstick. If the level does not reach the line which shows the smallest amount of oil required, remove the oil filler cap on the engine valve cover, and fill to within the “Good” range.

The engine coolant reserve tank (A) lets you quickly see when you need to add coolant. When the engine is cold, the level of the cool-ant in the reserve tank should be between the FULL and LOW marks. The radiator usually stays full so there is no reason to remove theradiator cap (B) except when you check the coolant freeze point or replace the antifreeze coolant.
Mitsubishi Motors Genuine Coolant provides excellent protection against corrosion andrust formation on all metals, including alumi- num, and prevents clogs in some parts of the engine. If you need to add co
olant often, or if the
level in the reserve tank does not drop when the engine cools, the cooling system shouldbe pressure-tested for leaks. Take your vehi- cle to an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer
or a repair facility of your choice for testing.
The radiator cap must be tight sealed to pre- vent losing coolant, which may result in engine damage. Only use a GenuineMitsubishi Parts radiator cap, or an approved equivalent.

To add coolant Use “Mitsubishi Motors Genuine Super LongLife Coolant Premium” or equivalent
*.
* : similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrate and non-borate coolant with long life hybrid organic acid technologyCAUTION Do not use alcohol or methanol antifreeze or any engine coolants that contain them. Using the wrong antifreeze can corrode aluminum parts.
The required concentration of anti-freeze dif- fers depending on the expected ambient tem- perature. Above -31 °F (-35 °C) : 50 % concentration of anti-freezeBelow -31 °F (-35 °C) : 60 % concentration of anti-freeze You can check the concentration level with agauge from an automotive supply store, or your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or service station can check it for you. Do not use water to adjust the concentration of coolant. Do not top off the tank with plain water only. Water by itself boils at a lower temperatureand does not stop rust or freezing. If the water freezes, it will damage your cooling system. Do not use tapwater. It can causecorrosion and rust.

Do not overfill the reserve tank. Your vehicle uses a special radiator cap that stays sealed and lets the coolant flow from the reserve tank back to the radiatorwhen the engine cools down. If you need to change the cap, use the exact same kind. Check the coolant freeze point in the radi- ator with the proper gauge, and only when it is safe. If you add antifreeze, the con-tents of the reserve tank must be protected against freezing. Keep the front of the radiator and con- denser clean. If the engine coolant temperature does not rise after the engine is warmed-up, takeyour vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice to have the thermostat checked, and replaced if necessary.

The air cleaner filter w
ill get dirty and dusty
from use and not filter properly. Replace itwith a new filter using the schedule in the “WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL”. 1. Remove the upper cover and duct. For details, refer to “Removing and installingthe upper cover and duct” on page 9-11. 2. While holding down
the tab (A), pull out
the connector (B). 3. Unclamp the cover. Open up the top of the cover and take out the air cleaner filter.
4. Replacing the air cleaner filter and put the cover back on in its original position.
WA R N I N G Wait for the engine to cool down before opening the radiator cap. Otherwise hot steam or boiling coolant could spray up from the radiator and scald you.

The windshield and rear window washer fluidreservoir is in the engine compartment.
Check the washer fluid level at regular inter- vals and add washer fluid to reservoir if nec- essary. Open the reservoir cap and check the fluidlevel with the dipstick. When freezing weather is anticipated, flush out the water in the reservoir by operating the pump. Fill the reservoir with windshield anti-freeze (not radiator antifreeze), and operatethe system for a few seconds to flush out the residual water.
N00938700245
The brake fluid and the clutch fluid share the reservoir tank.
The fluid level must be between the “MAX” and “MIN” marks on the reservoir. The fluid level falls slightly with wear of the brake pads, but this does not indicate any abnormality. The fluid in the master cylinder should be checked when doing other work under theengine hood. The brake system should also be checked for leaks at the same time. If the fluid level falls markedly in a shortlength of time, it indicates leaks from the brake system. If this occurs, have the vehicle checked by anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
