possible aroundthehips, notthewaist. Place

You could alsoslide under
the lapbelt andreceive serious
internal injuries.
. For themost effective protection
when thevehicle isin motion, the
seat should beupright. Alwayssit
well back inthe seat withboth feet
on the floor andadjust theseat belt
properly.
. Do not allow children toplay with
the seat belts. Mostseating posi-
tions areequipped withAutomatic
Locking Retractor (ALR)mode seat
belts. Ifthe seat beltbecomes
wrapped aroundachild's neckwith
the ALR mode activated, thechild
can beseriously injuredorkilled if
the seat beltretracts andbecomes
tight. Thiscanoccur evenifthe
vehicle isparked. Unbuckle theseat
belt torelease thechild. Ifthe seat
belt cannotbeunbuckled oris
already unbuckled, releasethechild
by cutting theseat beltwith a
suitable tool(such asaknife or
scissors) torelease theseat belt.

belt when thevehicle slowsdownrapidly or
during certain impacts.
The Automatic LockingRetractor (ALR)mode
(child restraint mode)lockstheseat beltfor
child restraint installation.
When ALRmode isactivated theseat belt
cannot beextended againuntiltheseat belt
tongue isdetached fromthebuckle andfully
retracted. Theseat beltreturns tothe ELR mode
after theseat beltfully retracts. Foradditional
information, seeªChild restraintsº (P.1-18) .
The ALR mode should beused onlyfor
child restraint installation. Duringnormal
seat beltusebyan occupant, theALR
mode should notbeactivated. Ifitis
activated, itmay cause uncomfortable seat
belt tension.
WARNING
When fastening theseat belts, be
certain thatseatbacks arecompletely
secured inthe latched position. Ifthey
are not completely secured,passengers
may beinjured inan accident orsudden
stop.

If, because ofbody sizeordriving position, itis
not possible toproperly fitthe lap-shoulder belt
and fasten it,an extender thatiscompatible with
the installed seatbelts isavailable thatcanbe
purchased. Theextender addsapproximately 8
in (200 mm)oflength andmay beused foreither
the driver orfront passenger seatingposition.
See aNISSAN dealerforassistance with
purchasing anextender ifan extender isrequired.
WARNING
. Only NISSAN seatbeltextenders,
made bythe same company which
made theoriginal equipment seat
belts, should beused withNISSAN
seat belts.
. Adults andchildren whocanuse the
standard seatbeltshould notuse an
extender. Suchunnecessary use
could result inserious personal
injury inthe event ofan accident.
. Never useseat beltextenders to
install childrestraints. Ifthe child
restraint isnot secured properly, the
child could beseriously injuredina
collision orasudden stop.

mild soap solution orany solution recom-
mended forcleaning upholstery orcarpets.
Then wipewithacloth andallow theseat

. Ifdirt builds upinthe shoulder belt
guide ofthe seat beltanchors, theseat
belts mayretract slowly.Wipe theshoulder
belt guide withaclean, drycloth.
. Periodically checktosee that theseat
belt andthemetal components, suchas
buckles, tongues, retractors, flexiblewires
and anchors, workproperly .If loose parts,
deterioration, cutsorother damage onthe
webbing isfound, theentire seatbelt
assembly shouldbereplaced.

WARNING
Do not allow children toplay with the
seat belts. Mostseating positions are
equipped withAutomatic LockingRe-
tractor (ALR)mode seatbelts. Ifthe
seat beltbecomes wrappedarounda
child's neckwiththeALR mode acti-
vated, thechild canbeseriously injured
or killed ifthe seat beltretracts and
becomes tight.Thiscanoccur evenif
the vehicle isparked. Unbuckle theseat
belt torelease thechild. Ifthe seat belt
can notbeunbuckled orisalready
unbuckled, releasethechild bycutting
the seat beltwith asuitable tool(such
as aknife orscissors) torelease the
seat belt.
Children needadults tohelp protect them.
They need tobe properly restrained.
In addition tothe general information inthis
manual, childsafety information isavailable from
many othersources, including doctors,teachers,
government trafficsafety offices, andcommunity
organizations. Everychildisdifferent, sobe sure
to learn thebest waytotransport yourchild.
There arethree basic types ofchild restraint systems:
. Rear-facing childrestraint
. Forward-facing childrestraint
. Booster seat
The proper restraint depends onthe child's size.
Generally ,infants uptoabout 1year andless
than 20lbs (9kg) should beplaced inrear-
facing childrestraints. Forward-facing child
restraints areavailable forchildren whooutgrow
rear-facing childrestraints andareatleast 1
year old.Booster seatsareused tohelp position
a vehicle lap/shoulder beltonachild whocanno
longer useaforward-facing childrestraint.
WARNING
Infants andchildren needspecial pro-
tection. Thevehicle's seatbelts maynot
fit them properly. Theshoulder beltmay
come tooclose tothe face orneck. The
lap belt may notfitover their small hip
bones. Inan accident, animproperly
fitting seatbeltcould cause serious or
fatal injury. Always useappropriate
child restraints.
All U.S. states andCanadian provinces or
territories requiretheuse ofapproved child
restraints forinfants andsmall children. See

Do not use thelower anchors ifthe combined
weight ofthe child andthechild restraint
exceeds 65lbs (29.5 kg).If the combined
weight ofthe child andthechild restraint is
greater than65lbs (29.5 kg),use thevehicle's
seat belt(not thelower anchors) toinstall the
child restraint. Besure tofollow thechild
restraint manufacturer's instructionsforinstalla-
tion.
Follow thesestepstoinstall aforward-facing
child restraint usingtheLATCH system:
1. Position thechild restraint onthe seat.

ments tothe LATCH lower anchors. Check
to make suretheLATCH attachment is

secured againstthevehicle seatback.
If necessary ,adjust orremove thehead
restraint toobtain thecorrect childrestraint
fit. Ifthe head restraint isremoved, storeitin
a secure place.Besure toreinstall the
head restraint whenthechild restraint

information.
If the seating position doesnothave ahead
restraint anditis interfering withtheproper
child restraint fit,try another seatingposition

place itin aforward-facing direction.Always
follow thebooster seatmanufacturer's
instructions.

the vehicle seatsothat itis stable.
If necessary ,adjust orremove thehead
restraint toobtain thecorrect booster seat
fit. Ifthe head restraint isremoved, storeitin
a secure place.Besure toreinstall the
head restraint whenthebooster seatis

If the seating position doesnothave ahead
restraint anditis interfering withtheproper

and supplemental airbag.
NISSAN recommends thatpre-teens andchil-
dren beproperly restrained inarear seat.
NISSAN alsorecommends thatappropriate
child restraints andbooster seatsbeproperly
installed inarear seat. Ifthis isnot possible, the
occupant classification sensorsaredesigned to
operate asdescribed abovetoturn thefront
passenger airbag OFF forspecified child
restraints. Failingtoproperly securechild
restraints andtouse theAutomatic Locking
Retractor (ALR)mode(childrestraint mode)
may allow therestraint totip ormove inan
accident orsudden stop.Thiscanalso result in
the passenger airbag inflating inacrash instead
of being OFF.(See ªChild restraintsº (P.1-18)
for proper useand installation.)
If the front passenger seatisnot occupied, the
passenger airbag isdesigned nottoinflate ina
crash. However, heavyobjects placedonthe
seat could resultinair bag inflation, because of
the object beingdetected bythe occupant
classification sensors.Otherconditions could
also result inair bag inflation, suchasifa child is
standing onthe seat, oriftwo children areonthe
seat, contrary tothe instructions inthis manual.
Always besure thatyouand allvehicle
occupants areseated andrestrained properly.Using
thepassenger airbag status light,youcan
monitor whenthefront passenger airbag is
automatically turnedOFFwiththeseat occu-
pied. Thelight willnotilluminate whenthefront
passenger seatisunoccupied.
If an adult occupant isin the seat butthe
passenger airbag status lightisilluminated
(indicating thattheairbag isOFF) ,it could be
that theperson isasmall adult, orisnot sitting
on the seat properly .
If achild restraint mustbeused inthe front seat,
the passenger airbag status lightmayormay
not beilluminated, dependingonthe size ofthe
child andthetype ofchild restraint beingused.If
the airbag status lightisnot illuminated
(indicating thattheairbag might inflate ina
crash) ,it could bethat thechild restraint orseat
belt isnot being usedproperly .Make surethat
the child restraint isinstalled properly,the seat
belt isused properly andtheoccupant is
positioned properly.If the airbag status lightis
not illuminated, repositiontheoccupant orchild
restraint inarear seat.
If the passenger airbag status lightwillnot
illuminate eventhough youbelieve thatthechild
restraint, theseat belts andtheoccupant are
properly positioned, thesystem maybesensing
an unoccupied seat(inwhich casetheairbag is
OFF) .Your NISSAN dealercancheck thatthe system
isOFF byusing aspecial tool.However,
until youhave confirmed withyour dealer that
your airbag isworking properly,reposition the
occupant orchild restraint inarear seat.
The airbag system andpassenger airbag status
light willtake afew seconds toregister achange
in the passenger seatstatus. However, ifthe
seat becomes unoccupied, theairbag status
light willremain off.
If amalfunction occursinthe front passenger air
bag system, thesupplemental airbag warning
light
, located inthe meter andgauges area,
will blink. Havethesystem checked bya
NISSAN dealer.
