DTC Logic INFOID:0000000004780135
DTC DETECTION LOGIC With the Air/Fuel Mixture Ratio Self-Learning Control, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the
theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio f eedback signal from the A/F sensors 1. The ECM calcu-
lates the necessary compensation to correct the of fset between the actual and the theoretical ratios.
In case the amount of the compensation value is extrem ely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the
ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and lights up the MIL (2 trip detection logic).

Description INFOID:0000000004780371
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is located on the combination
meter.
The MIL will light up when the ignition switch is turned ON without
the engine running. This is a bulb check.
When the engine is started, the MIL should go off. If the MIL remains
on, the on board diagnostic system has detected an engine system
malfunction.
For details, refer to EC-90, " Diagnosis Description " .

PRECAUTIONS
• Keep engine control system parts and harness dry.
• Before replacing ECM, perform “ECM Terminals and Refer-
ence Value” inspection and m ake sure ECM functions prop-
erly. Refer to EC-597, " ECM Terminal and Reference Value " .
• Handle mass air flow sensor carefully to avoid damage.
• Do not disassemble m ass air flow sensor.
• Do not clean mass air flow senso r with any type of detergent.
• Do not disassemble electric throttle control actuator.
• Even a slight leak in the ai r intake system can cause serious
incidents.
• Do not shock or jar the camshaft position sensor (PHASE),
crankshaft position sensor (POS).
• After performing each TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS, perform DTC
Confirmation Procedure or Overall Function Check.
The DTC should not be displ ayed in the DTC Confirmation
Procedure if the repair is co mpleted. The Overall Function
Check should be a good result if the repair is completed.
• When measuring ECM signals with a circuit tester, never allow
the two tester probes to contact.
Accidental contact of probes will cause a short circuit and
damage the ECM power transistor.
• Do not use ECM ground termina ls when measuring input/out-
put voltage. Doing so may result in damage to the ECM's tran-
sistor. Use a ground other than ECM terminals, such as the
ground. MEF040D

ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM
Introduction INFOID:0000000004537038
The ECM has an on board diagnostic system, which detects malfunctions related to engine sensors or actua-
tors. The ECM also records various emis sion-related diagnostic information including:
The above information can be checked using procedures listed in the table below. ×: Applicable —: Not applicable
*: When DTC and 1st trip DTC simultaneously appear on the display, they cannot be clearly distinguished from each other.
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on the instrument panel lights up when the same malfunction is detected
in two consecutive trips (Two trip detection logic), or when the ECM enters fail-safe mode.
(Refer to EC-582, " Fail-Safe Chart " .)
Two Trip Detection Logic INFOID:0000000004537039
When a malfunction is detected for the first time, 1st tr ip DTC and 1st trip Freeze Frame data are stored in the
ECM memory. The MIL will not light up at this stage. <1st trip>
If the same malfunction is detected again during the next drive, the DTC and Freeze Frame data are stored in
the ECM memory, and the MIL lights up. The MIL lights up at the same time when the DTC is stored. <2nd
trip> The “trip” in the “Two Trip Detection Logic” m eans a driving mode in which self-diagnosis is performed
during vehicle operation. Specific on board diagnostic item s will cause the ECM to light up or blink the MIL,
and store DTC and Freeze Frame data, even in the 1st trip, as shown below.
×: Applicable —: Not applicable
When there is an open circuit on MIL circuit, the ECM c annot warn the driver by MIL lighting up when there is
malfunction on engine control system. Emission-related diagnostic information Diagnostic service

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) INFOID:0000000004537041
DESCRIPTION The MIL is located on the instrument panel.
1. The MIL will light up when the ignition switch is turned ON with- out the engine running. This is a bulb check.
If the MIL does not light up, refer to DI-20 or see
EC-1010 .
2. When the engine is start ed, the MIL should go off.
If the MIL remains on, the on board diagnostic system has
detected an engine system malfunction.
ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM FUNCTION The on board diagnostic system has the following three functions. SEF217U

HOW TO SWITCH DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE
NOTE:
• It is better to count the ti me accurately with a clock.
• It is impossible to switch the di agnostic mode when an accelerator pedal position sensor circuit has
a malfunction.
• Always ECM returns to Diagnostic Test Mode I after ignition switch is turned OFF.
How to Set Diagnostic Test Mode II (Self-diagnostic Results)
1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully releas ed, turn ignition switch ON and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following procedure quickly five times within 5 seconds.
a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the MIL starts blinking.
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal. Diagnostic Test

Mode I Ignition switch in ON position
Engine stopped BULB CHECK This function checks the MIL bulb for damage (blown, open
circuit, etc.).
If the MIL does not come on, check MIL circuit.
Engine running MALFUNCTION WARNING This is a usual driving condition. When a malfunction is de-
tected twice in two consecutive driving cycles (two trip de-
tection logic), the MIL will light up to inform the driver that a
malfunction has been detected.
The following malfunctions will light up or blink the MIL in
the 1st trip.
• Misfire (Possible three way catalyst damage)
• One trip detection diagnoses
