Precautions for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) “AIR BAG” and “SEAT
BELT PRE-TENSIONER”

The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the SRS and SB section of
this Service Manual.
WARNING:
To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death
in the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be per-
formed by an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.
Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to per-
sonal injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable and Air
Bag Module, see the SRS section.
Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this
Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or
harness connectors.
Precautions Necessary for Steering Wheel Rotation After Battery DisconnectBGS0004C
NOTE:
This Procedure is applied only to models with Intelligent Key system and NATS (NISSAN ANTI-THEFT
SYSTEM).
Remove and install all control units after disconnecting both battery cables with the ignition knob in the
″LOCK″ position.
Always use CONSULT-II to perform self-diagnosis as a part of each function inspection after finishing
work. If DTC is detected, perform trouble diagnosis according to self-diagnostic results.
For models equipped with the Intelligent Key system and NATS, an electrically controlled steering lock mech-
anism is adopted on the key cylinder.
For this reason, if the battery is disconnected or if the battery is discharged, the steering wheel will lock and
steering wheel rotation will become impossible.
If steering wheel rotation is required when battery power is interrupted, follow the procedure below before
starting the repair operation.
OPERATION PROCEDURE
1. Connect both battery cables.
NOTE:
Supply power using jumper cables if battery is discharged.
2. Use the Intelligent Key or mechanical key to turn the ignition switch to the ″ACC″ position. At this time, the
steering lock will be released.
3. Disconnect both battery cables. The steering lock will remain released and the steering wheel can be
rotated.
4. Perform the necessary repair operation.
5. When the repair work is completed, return the ignition switch to the ″LOCK″ position before connecting
the battery cables. (At this time, the steering lock mechanism will engage.)
6. Perform a self-diagnosis check of all control units using CONSULT-II.

CHECKING RELIEF OIL PRESSURE
CAUTION:
Make sure that belt tension is normal before starting the following procedure.
1. Connect the hydraulic pressure gauge [SST] between oil pump
discharge connector and high-pressure hose. Bleed air from the
hydraulic circuit while opening valve fully. Refer to PS-7, "
Air
Bleeding Hydraulic System" .
2. Start engine. Run engine until oil temperature reaches 50 to
80°C (122 to 176°F).
CAUTION:
Leave the valve of the hydraulic pressure gauge [SST]
fully open while starting and running engine. If engine is
started with the valve closed, the hydraulic pressure in
oil pump goes up to the relief pressure along with
unusual increase of oil temperature.
Be sure to keep hose clear of belts and other parts when engine is started.
3. Fully close the hydraulic pressure gauge [SST] valve with
engine at idle and measure the relief oil pressure.
CAUTION:
Never keep valve closed for 10 seconds or longer.
4. Open the valve slowly after measuring. Repair oil pump if the
relief oil pressure is outside the standard. Refer to PS-31, "
Dis-
assembly and Assembly (Except for QR20DE Models)" , PS-35,
"Disassembly and Assembly (QR20DE Models)" .
5. After inspection, disconnect the hydraulic pressure gauge [SST]
from hydraulic circuit, then add fluid and bleed air. Refer to PS-
7, "Air Bleeding Hydraulic System" .

REMOVAL
1. Drain power steering fluid from reservoir tank.
2. Remove tyres from vehicle.
3. Remove side splash guard.
4. Remove heat insulator from vehicle. (Except for QR20DE mod-
els).
5. Loosen drive belt. Refer to EM-14, "
DRIVE BELTS" (QR20DE
models), EM-128, "
DRIVE BELTS" (Except for QR20DE mod-
els).
6. Remove drive belt from oil pump pulley.
7. Disconnect the pressure sensor electrical connector.
8. Remove piping of high pressure and low pressure (drain fluid
from their pipings). Refer to PS-39, "
HYDRAULIC LINE" .
9. Remove power steering oil pump mounting bolts, and then
remove power steering oil pump. Refer to PS-39, "
HYDRAULIC
LINE" .
INSTALLATION
Installation is the reverse order of removal. For tightening torque, refer to PS-39, "HYDRAULIC LINE" .
Perform the following procedure after installing.
–Adjust belt tension (Except for QR20DE models). Refer to EM-128, "DRIVE BELTS" .
–About the installation of QR20DE drive belt, refer to EM-14, "DRIVE BELTS" .
–Bleed air. Refer to PS-7, "Air Bleeding Hydraulic System" .

The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the SRS and SB section of
this Service Manual.

Disconnect both battery cables in advance.
Do not tamper with or force air bag lid open, as this may adversely affect air bag performance.
Be careful not to scratch pad and other parts.
When removing or disassembling any part, be careful not to damage or deform it. Protect parts, which
may get in the way with cloth.
When removing parts with a screwdriver or other tool, protect parts by wrapping them with vinyl or tape.
Keep removed parts protected with cloth.
If a clip is deformed or damaged, replace it.
If an unreusable part is removed, replace it with a new one.
Tighten bolts and nuts firmly to the specified torque.
After re-assembly has been completed, make sure each part functions correctly.
Remove stains in the following way.
Water-soluble stains:
Dip a soft cloth in warm water, and then squeeze it tightly. After wiping the stain, wipe with a soft dry cloth.
Oil stain:
Dissolve a synthetic detergent in warm water (density of 2 to 3% or less), dip the cloth, then clean off the stain
with the cloth. Next, dip the cloth in fresh water and squeeze it tightly. Then clean off the detergent completely.
Then wipe the area with a soft dry cloth.
Do not use any organic solvent, such as thinner or benzine.

Precaution for Seat Belt ServiceBHS0003Q
CAUTION:
Before removing the front seat belt pre-tensioner assembly, turn the ignition switch off, discon-
nect both battery cables and wait at least 3 minutes.
Do not use electrical test equipment for front seat belt pre-tensioner connector.
After replacing or reinstalling front seat belt pre-tensioner assembly, or reconnecting front seat
belt pre-tensioner connector, check the system function. Refer to SRS-16, "
SRS Operation Check"
.
Activate front seat belt pre-tensioner assembly before disposing. Refer to SRS-48, "DISPOSAL OF
AIR BAG MODULE AND SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER" .
Do not use disassembled buckle or seat belt assembly.
Replace anchor bolts if they are deformed or worn out.
Do not oil tongue and buckle.
If any component of seat belt assembly is questionable, do not repair. Replace the whole seat belt
assembly.
If webbing is cut, frayed, or damaged, replace seat belt assembly.
When replacing seat belt assembly, use a genuine NISSAN seat belt assembly.
AFTER A COLLISION
WARNING:
Inspect all seat belt assemblies including retractors and attaching hardware after any collision.
NISSAN recommends that all seat belt assemblies in use during a collision be replaced unless the col-
lision was minor and the belts show no damage and continue to operate properly. Failure to do so
could result in serious personal injury in an accident. Seat belt assemblies not in use during a colli-
sion should also be replaced if either damage or improper operation is noted. Seat belt pre-tensioners
should be replaced even if the seat belts are not in use during a frontal collision in which the air bags
are deployed.
Replace any seat belt assembly (including anchor bolts) if:
The seat belt was in use at the time of a collision (except for minor collisions and the belts, retractors and
buckles show no damage and continue to operate properly).
The seat belt was damaged in an accident. (i.e. torn webbing, bent retractor or guide).
The seat belt attaching point was damaged in an accident. Inspect the seat belt attaching area for damage
or distortion and repair as necessary before installing a new seat belt assembly.
Anchor bolts are deformed or worn out.
The front seat belt pre-tensioners should be replaced even if the seat belts are not in use during the colli-
sion in which the air bags are deployed.

CAUTION:
Before removal or installation, be sure to turn ignition switch OFF and disconnect both battery cables,
then wait for at least 3 minutes.
REMOVAL OF RETRACTOR
1. Slide outer anchor cover upward. Remove anchor bolt.
2. Remove center pillar lower garnish and center pillar upper garnish. Refer to EI-38, "
Removal and Installa-
tion" .
3. Remove shoulder anchor mounting anchor nut.
4. Remove seat belt adjuster mounting bolt.
5. Disconnect seat belt pre-tensioner connector.
CAUTION:
For disconnecting pre-tensioner connector, insert a
screwdriver wrapped with tape into cutout, and raise lock
to disconnect connector.
Connect connector with lock raised, and push lock into
connector.
