NOTE:
To ensure a complete and thorough diagnosis, the battery, starter and generator test segments must be done
as a set from start to finish.
1.PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
Perform the preliminary inspection. Refer to CHG-37, "
Inspection Procedure".

2.DISABLE THE POWER GENERATION VOLTAGE VARIABLE CONTROL SYSTEM
Disable the power generation voltage variable control with either of the following procedures.
After selecting “ENGINE” on the “SELECT SYSTEM” screen of CONSULT-III, set the “ALTERNATOR DUTY”
value to 0 % by selecting “ALTERNATOR DUTY” with “Active Test”. Continue “Active Test” until the end of
inspection. (When the DUTY value is 0 or 100 %, the normal power generation is performed according to the
characteristic of the IC regulator of the generator.)
Turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect the battery current sensor connector and leave it disconnected dur-
ing the course of the test.
NOTE:
Running the engine with the battery current sensor disconnected will cause DTC's (P1550-P1554) to set.
After finishing the inspection, connect the battery current sensor connector and erase the self-diagnostic
results history of the engine using CONSULT-III.

ENG SPEED rpm Indicates the engine speed computed from the
signal of the crankshaft position sensor (POS)
and camshaft position sensor (PHASE). Accuracy becomes poor if engine
speed drops below the idle rpm.
If the signal is interrupted while the
engine is running, an abnormal value
may be indicated.
MAS A/F SE-B1 V The signal voltage of the mass air flow sensor is
displayed. When the engine is stopped, a certain
value is indicated.
When engine is running specification
range is indicated in “SPEC”.
B/FUEL SCHDL msec “Base fuel schedule” indicates the fuel injection
pulse width programmed into ECM, prior to any
learned on board correction. When engine is running specification
range is indicated in “SPEC”.
A/F ALPHA-B1 % The mean value of the air-fuel ratio feedback cor-
rection factor per cycle is indicated. When the engine is stopped, a certain
value is indicated.
When engine is running specification
range is indicated in “SPEC”.
This data also includes the data for
the air-fuel ratio learning control.

gine coolant temperature determined
by the ECM is displayed.

air-fuel ratio feedback control:
RICH: means the mixture became ″rich″, and
control is being affected toward a leaner mixture.
LEAN: means the mixture became ″lean″, and
control is being affected toward a rich mixture. After turning ON the ignition switch,
″RICH″ is displayed until air-fuel mix-
ture ratio feedback control begins.
When the air-fuel ratio feedback is
clamped, the value just before the
clamping is displayed continuously.
HO2S2 MNTR(B1) RICH/LEAN Display of heated oxygen sensor 2 signal:
RICH: means the amount of oxygen after three
way catalyst is relatively small.
LEAN: means the amount of oxygen after three
way catalyst is relatively large. When the engine is stopped, a certain

speed signal sent from combination meter is dis-
played.

age is displayed. ACCEL SEN 2 signal is converted by
ECM internally. Thus, it differs from
ECM terminal voltage signal. ACCEL SEN 2

played. TP SEN 2-B1 signal is converted by
ECM internally. Thus, it differs from
ECM terminal voltage signal. TP SEN 2-B1

signal voltage of the intake air temperature sen-
sor) is indicated.
START SIGNAL ON/OFF Indicates start signal status [ON/OFF] computed
by the ECM according to the signals of engine
speed and battery voltage. After starting the engine, [OFF] is dis-
played regardless of the starter sig-
nal.

P0340 CMP SENSOR (PHASE)
DescriptionINFOID:0000000001670964
The camshaft position sensor (PHASE) senses the retraction of
camshaft (INT) to identify a particular cylinder. The camshaft position
sensor (PHASE) senses the piston position.
When the crankshaft position sensor (POS) system becomes inoper-
ative, the camshaft position sensor (PHASE) provides various con-
trols of engine parts instead, utilizing timing of cylinder identification
signals.
The sensor consists of a permanent magnet and Hall IC.
When engine is running, the high and low parts of the teeth cause
the gap with the sensor to change.
The changing gap causes the magnetic field near the sensor to
change.
Due to the changing magnetic field, the voltage from the sensor changes.
ECM receives the signals as shown in the figure.

NOTE:
If DTC P0340 is displayed with DTC P1129, first perform the trouble diagnosis for DTC P1129. Refer to

P0340 CMP SENSOR (PHASE)
DescriptionINFOID:0000000001693299

DTC DETECTION LOGIC
NOTE:
If DTC P0340 is displayed with DTC P1129, first perform the trouble diagnosis for DTC P1129. Refer to
EC-551, "
DTC Logic".
DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE
1.PRECONDITIONING
If DTC Confirmation Procedure has been previously conducted, always turn ignition switch OFF and wait at
least 10 seconds before conducting the next test.
TESTING CONDITION:
Before performing the following procedure, confirm that battery voltage is more than 10.5V with igni-
tion switch ON.
>> GO TO 2.
2.PERFORM DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE-I
1. Start engine and let it idle for at least 5 seconds.
If engine does not start, crank engine for at least 2 seconds.
2. Check 1st trip DTC.

1.CHECK STARTING SYSTEM
Turn ignition switch to START position.
Does the engine turn over? Does the starter motor operate?
YES >> GO TO 2.
NO >> Check starting system.
2.CHECK GROUND CONNECTION
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Check ground connection E15. Refer to Ground Inspection in GI-58, "
Circuit Inspection".
Is the inspection result normal?
YES >> GO TO 3.
NO >> Repair or replace ground connection.
3.CHECK CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR (PHASE) POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT
1. Disconnect camshaft position (CMP) sensor (PHASE) harness connector.
2. Turn ignition switch ON.
3. Check the voltage between CMP sensor (PHASE) harness connector and ground.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES >> GO TO 4.
NO >> Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
4.CHECK CMP SENSOR (PHASE) GROUND CIRCUIT FOR OPEN AND SHORT
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnect ECM harness connector.
3. Check the continuity between CMP sensor (PHASE) harness connector and ECM harness connector.
4. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES >> GO TO 5.
NO >> Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
5.CHECK CMP SENSOR (PHASE) INPUT SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN AND SHORT
1. Check the continuity between CMP sensor (PHASE) harness connector and ECM harness connector.
