β Hold the fuel filler cap on the fuel filler tube with one hand and unlock it by
turning the vehicle key to the left (only valid for vehicles which do not have
automatic unlocking of the fuel filler flap).
β Unscrew the fuel filler cap anti-clockwise and place the fuel filler cap from
above on the fuel filler flap ββfig. 147 - right.
Closing fuel filler cap
β Screw on the cap by turning it to the right until it is heard to lock.
β Hold the fuel filler cap on the fuel filler tube with one hand and lock it by turn-
ing the vehicle key to the right (only valid for vehicles which do not have auto-
matic locking of the fuel filler flap).
β Close the fuel filler flap until it locks.
The correct grade of fuel for your vehicle as well as the tyre size and inflation
pressures are stated on a sticker affixed to the inside of the fuel filler flap. Further
information on fuel β
βpage 176.
The fuel tank has a capacity of about 55 litres or 60 litres 1)
. WARNING
Pay attention to any legal requirements if you do carry a spare canister in the
vehicle. We do not recommend carrying any fuel canisters in your vehicle for
safety reasons. The canister can be damaged in the event of an accident and
fuel may leak out. CAUTION
β Before refuelling it is necessary to switch off the auxiliary heating system
(auxiliary heating and ventilation).
β Remove any fuel which has spilled onto the paintwork of your vehicle immedi-
ately - risk of paint damage! β
On vehicles fitted with a catalytic converter, never let the fuel tank run com-
pletely empty. An irregular supply of fuel to the engine can result in misfiring and
unburnt fuel may get into the exhaust system, which may result in overheating
and damage to the catalytic converter.
β The fuel tank is full just as soon as the pump nozzle switches off for the first
time, provided the nozzle has been operated properly. Do not continue refuelling -
otherwise the expansion volume is filled up. ο1)

Working in the engine compartment
Particular care is required when carrying out any work in the en-
gine compartment!
There is a risk of injuries, scalding, accidents and fire when working in the en-
gine compartment, e.g. inspecting and replenishing oil and other fluids. For this
reason, it is essential to comply with the warning instructions stated below and
with the general applicable rules of safety. The engine compartment of your car
is a hazardous area β
β .
WARNING
β Never open the bonnet if you see that steam or coolant is flowing out of
the engine compartment - risk of scalding! Wait long enough until the steam
or coolant has stopped escaping.
β Switch off the engine and pull out the ignition key.
β Apply the handbrake firmly.
β If your vehicle is fitted with a manual gearbox, move the gearshift lever in-
to Neutral, or if it is fitted with automatic gearbox, move the selector lever in-
to position
P.
β Allow the engine to cool down.
β Keep children clear of the engine compartment.
β Do not touch any hot engine parts - risk of burns!
β Never spill oil and other fluids over the hot engine. Such fluids (e.g. the an-
tifreeze contained in the coolant) may ignite!
β Avoid short circuits in the electrical system - particularly on the battery.
β Never place your hand into the radiator fan as long as the engine is still
warm. The fan might suddenly start running!
β Never open the cap of the coolant expansion reservoir so long as the en-
gine is still warm. The cooling system is pressurized!
β Cover over the cap of the reservoir with a large cloth when opening it as
protection for your face, hands and arms from hot steam or hot coolant.
β Do not let objects, such as e.g cleaning cloth or tools lie in the engine com-
partment. WARNING (Continued)
β If you wish to work under the vehicle, you must secure the vehicle from
rolling away and support it with suitable supporting blocks: the car jack is not
sufficient for this - risk of injury!
β In cases where it be necessary to carry out inspection work when the en-
gine is running there is an additional risk from rotating parts (e.g. the V-ribbed
belt, alternator, radiator fan) and from the high-voltage ignition system.
Please observe in addition the following:
βNever touch the electrical cables of the ignition system.
β Absolutely avoid any jewellery, loose items of clothing or long hair from
getting into the rotating parts of the engine - Hazard! Therefore remove
any jewellery beforehand, tie up your hair and wear tight fitting clothing.
β Please also comply with the warning instructions stated below when car-
rying out any essential work on the fuel system or on the electrical system.
βAlways separate the car battery from the electrical system.
β Do not smoke.
β Never carry out any work close to naked flames.
β Always keep a working fire extinguisher at hand. CAUTION
When replenishing fluids in the engine, always ensure that the fluids are on no ac-
count mixed up. This may result in major operating problems and also vehicle
damage! ο 181

Note
β All bolts must be clean and must turn easily.
β You must never grease or oil the wheel bolts!
β When fitting on unidirectional tyres, ensure that the tyres rotate in the correct
direction ββpage 192
. ο
Subsequent steps After changing the wheel, you must perform the following steps.
β
Stow and attach the replaced wheel in the spare wheel well using a special
screw ββfig. 163 .
β Stow the vehicle tool kit in the space provided.
β Check the tyre pressure on the spare wheel just mounted as soon as possible.
β Have the tightening torque of the wheel bolts checked with a torque wrench
as soon as possible. Steel and light alloy wheels must be tightened to a tight-
ening torque of 120 Nm.
β Change the damaged wheel or consult a specialist garage about possibilities
for getting repairs done. WARNING
It is necessary to observe the guidelines given on β
βpage 194 if the vehicle is
subsequently fitted with tyres which are different to those it was fitted with
at the works. Note
β If you find, when changing the wheel, that the wheel bolts are corroded and
difficult to turn, the bolts must be replaced before checking the tightening torque.
β Drive cautiously and only at a moderate speed to a workshop where the tight-
ening torque can be checked. ο
Full wheel trim Pulling off
β
Hook the clamp found in the vehicle tool kit into the reinforced edge of the full
wheel trim. β
Push the wheel key through the clamp, support the wheel key at the tyre and
pull off the wheel trim.
Install
β First press the full wheel trim onto the wheel at the valve opening provided.
Then press the full wheel trim into the wheel in such a way that its entire cir-
cumference locks correctly in place. CAUTION
β Use the pressure of your hand, do not knock on the full wheel trim! Heavy
knocks mainly on the points where the full wheel trim has not been inserted into
the wheel, can result in damage to the guide and centring elements of the full
wheel trim.
β Check for yourself that the safety wheel bolt is located in the hole in the area
of the valve before fitting the full wheel trim onto a steel wheel which is attached
with a safety wheel bolt β
βpage 203, Securing wheels against being stolen. ο
Wheel bolts with caps Fig. 164 Removing the cap.
Pulling off
β Push the plastic clip sufficiently far onto the cap until the inner catches of the
clip are positioned at the collar of the cap and detach the cap ββfig. 164 .
Install
β Push the caps fully onto the wheel bolts.
The caps are located in the well of the luggage compartment. ο 201
