Torque change curve of engine and drive shaft
Compression stroke Combustion stroke
Small changes from engine (k):
Damper increases the torque changes to clutchLarge changes from engine (j):
Damper decreases the torque changes to
transaxle by absorbing the impact
3) Operation
Compensating the irregular operation of engine: The secondary flywheel operates almost evenly
so does not cause gear noises
The mass of the primary flywheel is less than conventional flywheel so the engine irregularity
increases more (less pulsation absorbing effect).
Transaxle protection function: Reduces the torsional vibration to powertrain (transaxle) by reducing
the irregularity of engine. -

(3) Starting with jumper cable
If the battery is weak or terminated, the battery from another vehicle can be used with jumper
cables to start the engine.
Connecting order ▶
The positive (+) terminal of the discharged battery
The positive (+) terminal of the booster battery
The negative (-) terminal of the booster battery
Connect one end of the other jumper cable to the body of the discharged vehicle, such as the
engine block or a front towing hook. 1.

Starting ▶
Prepare a set of jumper cables.
Place another vehicle that has the same 12 V of power near to the discharged vehicle.
Switch off all electrical accessories for the discharged vehicle.
Apply the parking brake and shift the transaxle to the P position (automatic transaxle) or neutral (N)
position (manual transaxle).
Connect the jumper cables.
Try to start the discharged vehicle while accelerating the engine rpm in the booster vehicle.
Attempt to start the engine with the discharged battery.
After starting the engine, carefully disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse sequence of
connection. 1.

1. OVERVIEW
The axle is the device of transferring the drive power from the engine to the wheels; its inside is fitted to
the side gear spline of the differential gear and outside is connected to the drive wheels. The axles in
front and rear of vehicle are known as the front axle and rear axle respectively.
For the FR (Front engine, Rear wheel drive) type vehicle driven by the rear wheels, the drive power is
basically transferred to the rear wheels in the following order in 2WD mode: Engine-
>Clutch→Transmission→Propeller shaft (Rear propeller shaft)→Final reduction gear (Rear
axle)→Rear axle shaft→Rear wheels. In 4WD mode, the drive power to the rear wheels is
distributed to the front wheels in order of Front propeller shaft->Front axle->Front axle shaft->Front
wheel via the T/C assembly. And, 4WD solenoid valve releases the vacuum and engage the locking
hub actuator to the LH/RH front hub end gear to transfer the drive power of the axle shaft to the front
wheels.
The front axle and front axle shaft are used in only 4WD model. The rear axle has the independent
rear drive axle (IRDA) which is used on the independent rear suspension (IRS).

Power Transfer Process in Axle System at 4WD and 2WD Modes ▶
The vehicle is usually driving in 2WD mode but, if the driver operates, the drive power is distributed to
the front wheels rather than rear wheels via the transfer case only in 4WD mode in following order:
Front propeller shaft->Front axle->Front axle shaft->Front wheel.
Refer to "CHASSIS T/C" section for detailed information for 4WD drive.

1. OVERVIEW
The propeller shaft transfers the power through the transmission and transfer case to the front/rear
axle differential carrier (final reduction gear). It is manufactured by a thin rounded steel pipe to have
the strong resisting force against the torsion and bending. Both ends of propeller shaft are connected
to the spider and the center of propeller shaft is connected to the spline to accommodate the changes
of the height and length. The rubber bushing that covers the intermediate bearing keeps the balance o
f
rear propeller shaft and absorbs its vibration.
Function of propeller shaft ▶
Transmits driving torque.
Compensates the angle change (universal joint / CV joint).
Compensates the axial length change (splines for the slip joint). -
