3-1. Push-Button Ignition Switch■Safety PrecautionsRefer to "Safety Precautions" P94.■ Operating Range for Push-
Button Start System1) Antenna
2) Operating rangeNOTEIf the access key fob is not detected
within the operating range of the
antennas inside the vehicle, the push-
button ignition switch and the engine
start cannot be operated.
Even when the access key fob is
outside the vehicle, if it is placed too close to the glass, it may be possible to
switch the power or to start the engine.
Do not leave the access key fob in
the following places. It may become
impossible to operate the push-button
ignition switch and the engine start. - On the instrument panel
- On the floor
- Inside the glove box
- Inside the door trim pocket
- On the rear seat
- On the rear shelf
When operating the push-button
ignition switch or starting the engine, if
the access key fob battery is
discharged, perform the procedure
described in "Access Key Fob – If
Access Key Fob Does Not Operate
Properly" P325. In such a case,
replace the battery immediately. Refer
to "Replacing Battery of Access Key
Fob" P376.

3-2. Hazard Warning FlasherThe hazard warning flasher is used to
warn other drivers when you have to park
your vehicle under emergency conditions.
The hazard warning fl asher works with the
ignition switch in any position.
To turn on the hazard warning flasher,
press the hazard warning button on the
instrument panel. All the turn signal lights
and the turn signal indicator lights will
flash. To turn off the flasher, press the
button again.NOTEWhen the hazard warning flasher is on,
the turn signals do not work.
3-3. Meters and GaugesNOTELiquid crystal displays are used in
some of the meters and gauges in the
combination meter. You will find their
indications hard to see if you wear
polarized glasses.■ SpeedometerThe speedometer shows the vehicle
speed.
■ TachometerThe tachometer shows the engine speed
in thousands of revolutions per minute.NOTEThe initial movement of the bar display
that occurs when the ignition switch is
turned to the “ON” position can be
activated or deactivated.
For details, refer to "General settings"
P161.

CAUTION
Do not operate the engine with
the pointer of the tachometer in
the red zone. In this range, fuel
injection will be cut by the engine
control module to protect the
engine from overrevving. The
engine will resume running
normally after the engine speed is
reduced below the red zone. Pay extra attention to the engine
speed when the engine is cold, as
the red zone will be lower than
normal.

■Fuel GaugeThe fuel gauge shows the approximate
amount of fuel remaining in the tank.
When the ignition switch is in the “OFF” or
“ACC” position, the fuel gauge shows “E”
even if the fuel tank contains fuel.
The gauge may move slightly due to fuel
level movement in the tank (e.g., during
braking, turning or acceleration).NOTEYou will see the “ ” sign in the fuel
gauge. This indicates that the fuel filler
lid is located on the right side of the
vehicle.
■ Engine Coolant Temperature
GaugeThe temperature gauge shows engine
coolant temperature when the ignition
switch is in the “ON” position.
The coolant temperature will vary in
accordance with the outside temperature
and driving conditions.
We recommend that you drive moderately
until the pointer of the temperature gauge
reaches near the middle of the range.
Engine operation is optimum with the
engine coolant at this temperature range
and high revving operation when the
engine is not warmed up enough should
be avoided.
■ Outside TemperatureDisplays the outside temperature within
the range of -40°F (-40°C) to 122°F
(50°C). Low outside temperature indicator
comes on when the ambient temperature
is 37°F (3°C) or lower.NOTEThe outside temperature indicator
shows the temperature around the
sensor. However, the temperature may
not be indicated correctly or the
update may be delayed in the follow-
ing conditions.

Malfunction Indicator LightIf this light illuminates steadily or blinks
while the engine is running, it may indicate
that there is at least one problem or poten-
tial problem somewhere in the emission
control system.
▼ If the light illuminates constantly
If the light illuminates constantly while
driving or does not turn off after the engine
starts, an emission control system
malfunction has been detected.
We recommend that you have your
vehicle checked by an authorized
SUBARU dealer immediately.
NOTEThis light also illuminates when the
fuel filler cap is not tightened until it
clicks.
If you have recently refueled your vehicle,
the cause of the CHECK ENGINE warning
light/malfunction indicator light coming on
could be a loose or missing fuel filler cap.
Remove the cap and retighten it until it
clicks. Make sure not hing is interfering
with the sealing of the cap. Tightening the
cap will not make the CHECK ENGINE
warning light/malfunction indicator light
turn off immediately. It may take several
driving trips. If the light does not turn off,
take your vehicle to your authorized
SUBARU dealer immediately.
▼ If the light is blinking
If the light is blinking while driving, an
engine misfire condition has been
detected which may damage the emission
control system.
To prevent serious damage to the emis-
sion control system, you should conform
to the following instructions.
Reduce vehicle speed.
Avoid hard acceleration.
Avoid steep uphill grades.
Reduce the amount of cargo, if
possible. The CHECK ENGINE warning light/

CAUTION
If the CHECK ENGINE warning light/
malfunction indicator light illumi-
nates while you are driving, have
your vehicle checked/repaired by
your SUBARU dealer as soon as
possible. Continued vehicle opera-
tion without havi ng the emission
control system checked and
repaired as necessary could cause
serious damage, which may not be
covered by your vehicle’s warranty.

This coolant temperature low indicator
light/coolant temper ature high warning
light has the following three functions.
Illumination in BLUE indicates insuffi-
cient warming up of the engine
Blinking in RED indicates that the
engine is close to overheating
Illumination in RED indicates over-
heating condition of the engine
For the system check, this indicator light/
warning light illuminates in RED for
approximately 2 seconds when the igni-
tion switch is turned to the “ON” position.
After that, this indicator light/warning light
changes to BLUE and maintains illumina- tion in
BLUE. This BLUE illuminated light
turns off when the engine is warmed up
sufficiently.
If the engine coolant temperature
increases over the specified range, the
indicator light/warning light blinks in RED.
At this time, the engine is close to over-
heating.
If the engine coolant temperature
increases further, the indicator light/
warning light illuminates in RED continu-
ously. At this time, the engine may be
overheating.
When the indicator light/warning light
blinks in RED or illuminates in RED, safely
stop the vehicle as soon as possible, and
refer to the emergency steps for the
engine overheating. Refer to "Engine
Overheating" P319. After that, have the
system checked by your nearest
SUBARU dealer.
Also, if the indicator light/warning light
often blinks in RED, the electrical system
may be malfunctioning. Contact your
SUBARU dealer for an inspection.
NOTEIf the engine is restarted after a certain
driving condition, this indicator light/
warning light may illuminate in RED.
However, this is not a malfunction if the indicator light/warning light turns
off after a short time.
■ Charge Warning LightIf this light illuminates when the engine is
running, it may indicate that the charging
system is not working properly.
If the light illuminates while driving or does
not turn off after the engine starts, stop the
engine at the first safe opportunity and
check the drive belt. If the belt is loose,
broken or if the belt is in good condition
but the light remains illuminated, contact
your nearest SUBARU dealer immedi-
ately.■ Oil Pressure Warning
LightIf this light illuminates when the engine is
running, it may indicate that the engine oil
pressure is low and the lubricating system
is not working properly.

contact your nearest SUBARU dealer
immediately.■ AT OIL TEMP Warning
Light (AT Models) If this light illuminates when the engine is
running, it may indicate that the transmis-
sion fluid temperature is too hot.
If the light illuminates while driving, imme-
diately stop the vehicle in a safe place and
let the engine idle until the warning light
turns off.■ Low Tire Pressure
Warning Light (If
Equipped)When the ignition switch is turned to the
“ON” position, the low tire pressure
warning light will illuminate for approxi-
mately 2 seconds to check that the tire
pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is
functioning properly. If there is no problem
and all tires are properly inflated, the light
will go out.
Each tire, including the spare (if provided),
should be checked monthly when cold
and inflated to the inflation pressure
recommended by the vehicle manufac-
turer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation
pressure label. (If your vehicle has tires of
a different size than the size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pres-
sure label, you should determine the
proper tire inflation pressure for those
tires.)
As an added safety feature, your vehicle
has been equipped with a tire pressure
monitoring system (TPMS) that illumi-
nates a low tire pressure telltale when one
or more of your tires is significantly under-
inflated. Accordingly, when the low tire
pressure telltale illuminates, you should
stop and check your tires as soon as
possible, and inflate them to the proper
pressure. Driving on a significantly under-
inflated tire causes the tire to overheat
and can lead to tire failure. Under-inflation
also reduces fuel efficiency and tire tread
life, and may affect the vehicle’s handling
and stopping ability.
Please note that the TP MS is not a substi-
tute for proper tire maintenance, and it is
the driver’s responsibility to maintain
correct tire pressure, even if under-infla-
tion has not reached the level to trigger
illumination of the TPMS low tire pressure
telltale.
Your vehicle has also been equipped with
a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate
when the system is no t operating properly.
The TPMS malfunction indicator is
combined with the low tire pressure tell-
tale. When the system detects a malfunc-
tion, the telltale will flash for approximately one minute and then remain continuously
illuminated. This sequence will continue
upon subsequent vehicle start-ups as long
as the malfunction exists. When the
malfunction indicator is illuminated, the
system may not be able to detect or signal
low tire pressure as intended. TPMS
malfunctions may occur for a variety of
reasons, including the installation of
replacement or alternate tires or wheels
on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS from
functioning properly. Always check the
TPMS malfunction telltale after replacing
one or more tires or wheels on your
vehicle to ensure that the replacement or
alternate tires and wheels allow the TPMS
to continue to function properly.
Should the warning light illuminate
steadily after blinking for approximately
one minute, have the system inspected by
your nearest SUBARU dealer as soon as
possible.
WARNING
If this light does not illuminate
briefly after the ig nition switch is
turned on or the light illuminates
steadily after blinking for approxi-
mately one minute, you should have
your Tire Pressure Monitoring Sys-
tem checked at a SUBARU dealer as
soon as possible.

Warning and Indicator Lights
140■ABS Warning LightThe ABS warning light illuminates
together with the brake system warning
light if the EBD system malfunctions. For
further details of the EBD system malfunc- tion warning, refe
r to "Brake System
Warning Light" P140.
NOTEIf the warning light behavior is as
described in the following conditions,
the ABS may be considered normal.
The warning light illuminates right
after the engine is started but turns off
immediately, remaining off.
The warning light remains illumi-
nated after the engine has been
started, but it turns off while driving.
The warning light illuminates during
driving, but it turns off immediately and
remains off.
When driving with an insufficient battery
voltage such as when the engine is jump
started, the ABS warn ing light may illumi-
nate. This is due to the low battery voltage
and does not indicate a malfunction.
When the battery becomes fully charged,
the light will turn off.
■ Brake System
Warning LightThis light has the following functions.
▼ Parking brake warning
The light illuminates with the parking
brake applied while the ignition switch is in
the “ACC” or “ON” position. It turns off
when the parking brake is fully released.
▼ Brake fluid level warningThis light illuminates when the brake fluid
level has dropped to near the “MIN” level
of the brake fluid reservoir with the ignition
switch in the “ON” position and with the
parking brake fully released.
CAUTION
If any of the following conditions
occur, we recommend that you
have the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake
System) repaired at the first avail-
able opportunity by your
SUBARU dealer.
- The warning light does not
illuminate when the ignition
switch is turned to the “ON”
position.- The warning light illuminates
when the ignition switch is
turned to the “ON” position,
but it does no t turn off even
after starting the vehicle.- The warning light illuminates
during driving.
When the warning light is on (and
brake system warning light is off),
the ABS function shuts down;
however, the conventional brake
system continues to operate
normally.
WARNING
Driving with the brake system
warning light on is dangerous.
This indicates your brake system
may not be working properly. If
the light remains illuminated,
have the brakes inspected by a
SUBARU dealer immediately. If at all in doubt about whether the
brakes are operating properly, do
not drive the vehicle. Have your
vehicle towed to the nearest
SUBARU dealer for repair.
