■ Charging the 12-volt battery

■ After the 12-volt battery has discharged or when the terminal has been
removed and installed during exchange, etc.
The gasoline engine may not stop even if the vehicle is being d riven by the
hybrid battery (traction battery). If this continues for a few days, contact any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or an y reliable
repairer.
■ Sounds and vibrations specific to a Hybrid Electric Vehicle
There may be no engine sound or vibration even though the vehic le is able to
move with the “READY” indicator is illuminated. For safety, app ly the parking
brake and make sure to shift the shift lever to P when parked.
The following sounds or vibrations may occur when the hybrid sy stem is
operating and are not a malfunction:
● Motor sounds may be heard from the engine compartment.
● Sounds may be heard from the hybrid battery (traction battery) when the
hybrid system starts or stops.
● Relay operating sounds such as a snap or soft clank will be emitted from the
hybrid battery (traction battery), behind the rear seats, when the hybrid sys-
tem is started or stopped.
● Sounds from the hybrid system may be heard when the back door is open.
● Sounds may be heard from the transmission when the gasoline engine
starts or stops, when driving at low speeds, or during idling.
● Engine sounds may be heard when accelerating sharply.
● Sounds may be heard due to regenerative braking when the brake pedal is
depressed or as the accelerator pedal is released.
● Vibration may be felt when the gasoline engine starts or stops.
● Cooling fan sounds may be heard from the air intake vent. (P. 124)

WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
■ When driving on slippery road surfaces
● Sudden braking, acceleration and steering may cause tire slippage and
reduce your ability to control the vehicle.
● Sudden acceleration, engine braking due to shifting, or changes in engine
speed could cause the vehicle to skid.
● After driving through a puddle, depress the brake pedal to make sure that
the brakes are functioning properly. Wet brake pads may prevent the
brakes from functioning properly. If the brakes on only one sid e are wet
and not functioning properly, steering control may be affected.
■ When shifting the shift lever
● Do not let the vehicle roll backward while a forward driving position is
selected, or roll forward while the shift lever is in R.
Doing so may result in an accident or damage to the vehicle.
● Do not shift the shift lever to P while the vehicle is moving.
Doing so can damage the transmission and may result in a loss o f vehicle
control.
● Do not shift the shift lever to R while the vehicle is moving forward.
Doing so can damage the transmission and may result in a loss o f vehicle
control.
● Do not shift the shift lever to a driving position while the vehicle is moving
backward.
Doing so can damage the transmission and may result in a loss o f vehicle
control.
● Moving the shift lever to N while the vehicle is moving will disengage the
hybrid system. Engine braking is not available with the hybrid system dis-
engaged.
● Be careful not to shift the shift lever with the accelerator pedal depressed.
Shifting the shift lever to any position other than P or N may lead to unex-
pected rapid acceleration of the vehicle that may cause an acci dent and
result in death or serious injury.

NOTICE
■When encountering flooded roads
Do not drive on a road that has flooded after heavy rain, etc. Doing so may
cause the following serious damage to the vehicle:
● Engine stalling
● Short in electrical components
● Engine damage caused by water immersion
In the event that you drive on a flooded road and the vehicle i s flooded, be
sure to have any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorize d repairer, or
any reliable repairer check the following:
● Brake function
● Changes in quantity and quality of oil and fluid used for the engine, hybrid
transmission, etc.
● Lubricant condition for the bearings and suspension joints (where possi-
ble), and the function of all joints, bearings, etc.

■Important points regarding stability
Vehicle movement resulting from uneven road surfaces and strong
crosswinds will affect handling. The vehicle may also be rocked by
passing buses or large trucks. Frequently check behind when mov -
ing alongside such vehicles. As soon as such vehicle movement
occurs, immediately start to decelerate smoothly by slowly appl ying
the brakes. Always steer the vehicle straight ahead while braki ng.
■Passing other vehicles
Consider the total combined length of your vehicle and trailer and
ensure that the vehicle-to-vehicle distance is sufficient befor e exe-
cuting lane changes.
■Transmission information
To maintain engine braking efficiency and charging system perfo r-
mance when using engine braking, do not use the transmission in
D. Shift the shift lever to B.
■If the engine overheats
Towing a loaded trailer up a long, steep incline in temperature s
exceeding 30 C (85F) may result in the engine overheating. If the
engine coolant temperature gauge indicates that the engine is o ver-
heating, turn the air conditioning off immediately, leave the r oad and
stop the vehicle in a safe place. ( P. 757)
■When parking the vehicle
Always place wheel chocks under the wheels of both the vehicle
and trailer. Firmly set the parking brake and shift the shift l ever to P.

Hybrid transmission (2ZR-FXE engine)
While the power switch is in ON mode and the brake pedal
depressed*, shift the shift lever while pushing the shift release
button on the shift knob.
Shift the shift lever while pushing the shift release button on
the shift knob.
Shift the shift lever normally.
When shifting the shift lever between P and D, make sure that t he
vehicle is completely stopped and the brake pedal is depressed.
*: To shift the shift lever from P, the brake pedal must be depre ssed
before the shift release button is pushed. If the shift release button is
pushed first, the shift lock will not be released.

Hybrid transmission (M20A-FXS engine)
While the power switch is in ON mode and the brake pedal
depressed*, shift the shift lever while pushing the shift relea se
button on the shift knob.
Shift the shift lever while pushing the shift release button on
the shift knob.
Shift the shift lever normally.
When shifting the shift lever between P and D, make sure that t he
vehicle is completely stopped and the brake pedal is depressed.
*: To shift the shift lever from P, the brake pedal must be depressed
before the shift release button is pushed. If the shift release button is
pushed first, the shift lock will not be released.

■ Downshift restriction warning buzzer (S mode)
To help ensure safety and driving performance, downshifting ope ration may
sometimes be restricted. In some circumstances, downshifting ma y not be
possible even when the shift lever is operated. (A buzzer will sound twice.)
■ S mode
● When the shift range is S4 or lower, holding the shift lever toward “+” sets
the shift range to S6.
● Automatically selects a higher shift range before the engine speed becomes
too high.
■ If the S indicator does not come on or the D indicator is displayed even
after shifting the shift lever to S
This may indicate a malfunction in the transmission system. Hav e the vehicle
inspected by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorize d repairer, or
any reliable repairer immediatel y. (In this situation, the transmission will oper-
ate in the same manner as when the shift lever is in D.)
Remove the cover.
Remove the cover using flathead
screwdriver. To prevent damage to the
cover, tip the screwdriver with a rag.
Press the shift lock override button
while pressing the button on the shift
knob.
The shift lever can be shifted while the
button is pressed.

If your vehicle needs to be towed
The following may indicate a problem with your hybrid transmission.
Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized rep airer,
or any reliable repairer or commercial towing service before to wing.
● The hybrid system warning message is shown on the multi-informa-
tion display and the vehicle does not move.
● The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
If towing is necessary, we recommend having your vehicle
towed by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer or commercial towing service ,
using a wheel-lift type truck or flatbed truck.
Use a safety chain system for all towing, and abide by all stat e/
provincial and local laws.
