2. Features of 5S-FNE Engine
Features of the 5S-FNE engine are listed below.

the wall surface, making optimal air-fuel ratio control possible
immediately after the engine has been started.
Precision air-fuel ratio feedback control that uses an air-fuel ratio sensor
and a heated oxygen sensor has been adopted.
Two catalytic converters designed exclusively for the natural gas engine
have been adopted: the WU-TWC (Warm Up Three-Way Catalytic
Converter) and the TWC (Three-Way Catalytic Converter).
Other Features
Highly rigid pistons have been adopted to accommodate the high
compression ratio.
A CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) pressure regulator that precisely
regulates the CNG has been adopted.
A large-bore delivery pipe and fuel hose with minimal internal conduit
resistance have been adopted.
The electro magnetic fuel shutoff valve is added on the delivery pipe.
A fuel pressure sensor that corrects the fuel injection volume and a fuel
temperature sensor have been provided on the delivery pipe.
The starting performance of the engine at low temperatures has been
ensured by increasing the volume of the airflow of the IAC (Idle Air
Control).
Materials that excel in wear resistance have been adopted on the valves
and valve seats for both the intake and exhaust.
Rust-resistant spark plugs have been adopted.
Aluminum lining and carbon fiber have been adopted in the fuel tank.
For the fuel gauge, a fuel tank fuel temperature sensor and a fuel pipe fuel
pressure sensor have been adopted.

5. Intake and Exhaust System
Throttle Body
The throttle body is basically the same as that of the 5S-FE engine. However, to ensure the starting perfor-
mance at low temperatures, the air passage for the IAC (Idle Air Control) has been increased on the 5S-FNE
engine. The IAC valve is a 1-coil type with a built-in driver.
Exhaust Manifold
As in the California specification 5S-FE engine,
the stainless steel exhaust manifold and WU-
TWC (Warm Up Three-Way Catalytic Convert-
er) have been integrated to improve the warm-up
performance of TWC, thus reducing exhaust
emissions.
However, the 5S-FNE engine uses a catalytic
converter that has been designed exclusively for
the CNG application, in which the loading of the
noble metal has been increased.
Exhaust Pipe
1) General
To secure sufficient luggage compartment capacity, the main muffler has been relocated below the rear
seat. Furthermore, the muffler capacity has been increased.
A 2-way exhaust control system has been adopted to improve engine performance and reduce the exhaust
noise.
Similar to the WU-TWC, the TWC (Three-Way Catalytic Converter) has been designed exclusively for
the CNG application, in which the loading of the noble metal has been increased.

PCV VALVE INSPECTION
1. REMOVE PCV VALVE
2. INSTALL CLEAN HOSE TO PCV VALVE
3. BLOW AIR FROM CYLINDER HEAD SIDE
Check that air passes through easily.
NOTICE: Do not suck air through the valve.
Petroleum substances inside the valve are harmful.
PCV HOSES AND CONNECTIONS
INSPECTION
VISUALLY INSPECT HOSES, CONNECTIONS AND
GASKETS

Check that air passes through with difficulty.
If the PCV valve fails either of the checks, replace it.

EGR SYSTEM INSPECTION
1. CHECK AND CLEAN FILTER IN EGR VACUUM
MODULATOR
(a) Check the filter for contamination or damage.
(b) Using compressed air, clean the filter.
HINT: Install the filter with the coarser surface facing
the atmospheric side (outward).
2. PREPARATION
Using a 3±way connector, connect a vacuum gauge
to the hose between the EGR valve and VSV.
3. CHECK SEATING OF EGR VALVE
Start the engine and check that the engine starts and
runs at idle.
6. CHECK VSV AND EGR VACUUM MODULATOR
WITH HOT ENGINE
(a) Warm up the engine.
(b) Check that the vacuum gauge indicates low vacuum
at 2,500 rpm. 5. CHECK VSV
(a) The engine coolant temperature should be below
60
C (140
F) (A/T) or 55

F) (M/T).
(b) Check that the vacuum gauge indicates zero at 2.500
rpm. 4. CONNECT TERMINALS TE1 AND E1
Using SST, connect terminals TE 1 and E 1 of the data

THREE±WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER
REPLACEMENT
WU±TWC:
1. DISCONNECT NEGATIVE (±) TERMINAL CABLE
FROM BATTERY
CAUTION: Work must be started after 90 seconds from
the time the ignition switch is turned to the 'LOCK'
position and the negative (±) terminal cable is discon±
nected from the battery.
2. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE
(a) Loosen the 2 bolts, and disconnect the bracket.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts and nuts holding the front exhaust
pipe to the center exhaust pipe.
(c) Using a 14 mm deep socket wrench, remove the 3
nuts holding the front exhaust pipe to the WU±TWC.
(d) Remove the front exhaust pipe and gaskets.HEAT INSULATOR INSPECTION
TWC:
1. CHECK HEAT INSULATOR FOR DAMAGE
2. CHECK FOR ADEQUATE CLEARANCE BETWEEN
THREE ± WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND
HEAT INSULATOR
3. REMOVE WARM UP THREE ± WAY CATALYTIC
CONVERTER
(a) Check that the WU±TWC is cool.
(b) Disconnect the sub oxygen sensor connector.
(c) Remove the bolt, nut and No. 1 manifold stay.

(e) Remove the 3 bolts, 2 nuts, WU ±TWC, gasket, re±
tainer and cushion.
(f) Remove the 8 bolts and 2 heat insulators from the
WU ±TWC.
4. REINSTALL WARM±UP THREE±WAY
CATALYTIC CONVERTER
(a) Install the 2 heat insulators to a new WU ±TWC with
the 8 bolts.
(c) Install the WU±TWC with the 3 bolts and 2 new nuts.
Torque: 29 N±m (300 kgf±cm, 22 ft±lbf)
(b) Place new cushion, retainer and gasket on the WU±
TWC. (d) Remove the bolt, nut and manifold stay.

Air is filtered through the air cleaner and the amount flowing to the air intake chamber is
determined according to the throttle valve opening in the throttle body and the engine speed.
Intake air controlled by the throttle valve opening is distributed from the air intake chamber to the
manifold of each cylinder and is drawn into the combustion chamber.
At low temperatures the IAC valve opens and the air flows through the IAC valve and the throttle
body, into the air intake chamber. During engine warming up, even if the throttle valve is
completely closed, air flows to the air intake chamber, thereby increasing the idle speed (first idle
operation).
The air intake chamber prevents pulsation of the intake air. It also prevents intake air interference
in each cylinder.

(1) Remove glove compartment.
(See page EG1±234).
(2) Warm up engine to normal operating temperature.
Check voltage between terminal EGR of engine control module
connector and body ground.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
Go to step Measure voltage between terminal EGR of en-

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
VSV Circuit for Fuel Pressure Control (Only for California
spec.)
Check for open and short in harness and
connector between EFI main relay and ECM.Proceed to next circuit inspection
shown on matrix chart
(See page EG1±327).
Repair or replace harness or connector. Check voltage of VSV power source. Check VSV for fuel pressure control.
Check and replace ECM.Replace VSV.
DIAGNOSTIC CHART
The ECM turns on a VSV (Vacuum Switching
Valve) to draw the air into the diaphragm chamber
of the pressure regulator if it detects that the tem-
perature of the engine coolant is too high during
engine starting. The air drawn into the chamber
increases the fuel pressure to prevent fuel vapor
lock at high engine temperature in order to help the
engine start when it is warm.
Fuel pressure control ends approx. 90 secs. after
the engine is started.

DESCRIPTION
The new Camry includes the accessory systems shown in the below.
System
Outline
Power Window System
The power window system includes one±touch auto down and key±off opera-
tion functions. The one±touch auto down function automatically opens the
driver 's door window fully. The key±off operation function makes it possible
to operate the power windows for approximately 45 seconds after the igni-
tion key is turned to the ACC or LOCK position, if the front doors are not
opened.
The basic construction and operation of this system are the same as in the
previous model.
Door Lock Control System
This system has a ªkey±linked lock and unlock functionº and a ªkey±confine
prevention functionº. All doors can be locked and unlocked simultaneously
by a key operation at the front right or left foor. (The key needs to be oper-
ated twice to unlock all the doors at the driver's door.) If the door lock opera-
tion is performed when one of the front doors is open and the ignition key is
inserted in the key cylinder, doors are unlocked automatically to prevent the
ignition key from being left inside the vehicle.
The basic construction and operation are the same as in the previous model.
Wireless Door Lock Remote Con-
trol System
A remote control system in which the lock and unlock functions of all doors
and panic alarm function can be controlled by the signals emitted from a
transmitter is adopted. The transmitter is also provided with a 2±step unlock
function to unlock all the doors by pressing the switch twice.
The basic construction and operation are the same as in the '96 Avalon.
However, certain functions have been changed. For details, see page 107.
Theft Deterrent System
When an attempt is made to forcibly enter the vehicle or open the hood or
trunk lid without a key, or when the battery terminals are removed and re-
connected, this system sounds the horn and flashes the headlights and tail-
lights for about 1 minute to alert the owner. At the same time, it locks all the
doors and electronically disconnects the starter.
The basic operation is the same as in the '96 Avalon.
Power Seat
As in the previous model, the front seats are power assisted by electric mo-
tors so that the seat positions can be adjusted easily by a simple switch op-
eration.
