Steering Linkage and Boots
With the vehicle stopped, check for excessive freeplay in the steering wheel.
Inspect the linkage for bending and damage and the dust boots for deterioration,
cracks and damage. Replace any damaged parts. A qualified technician should
perform these operations.
Timing Belt
Replace every 90,000 miles. A qualified technician should perform this operation.
Tire Rotation
Tires should be rotated at specified intervals according to the instructions in the
Owner’s Manual. When rotating tires, check for damage and uneven wear.
Replace if necessary.
Transfer Case Oil
Inspect or replace at specified intervals. When performing inspections, check for
signs of leakage. If you discover any leakage, have it repaired by a qualified tech
nician immediately.
Wheel Bearing and Drive Shaft Bushing Grease
Repack the wheel bearings with wheel bearing grease and the drive shaft
bushing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base chassis grease. A qualified
technician should perform these operations.

ing on the battery. It contains poi-
sonous and corrosive sulfuric acid.
NOTICE
Remember that battery and ignition
cable carry high currents or volt-
ages. Be careful of accidentally
causing a short circuit.
Add only Toyota Super Long Life
Coolantº or similar high quality eth-
ylene glycol based non- silicate,
non- amine, non- nitrite, and non- bo-
rate coolant with long- life hybrid
organic acid technology to fill the
radiator. Toyota Super Long Life
Coolantº is a mixture of 50% cool-
ant and 50% deionized water (for
the U.S.A.) or 55% coolant and 45%
deionized water (for Canada).
If you spill some of the coolant, be
sure to wash it off with water to
prevent it from damaging the parts
or paint.
Do not allow dirt or anything else
to fall through the spark plug holes.
Use only spark plugs of the speci-
fied type. Using other types will
cause engine damage, loss of per-
formance or radio noise.
Do not reuse iridium- tipped spark
plugs by cleaning or regapping.
Do not overfill automatic transmis-
sion fluid and power steering fluid,
or the transmission and power
steering could be damaged.
Do not drive with the air cleaner
filter removed, or excessive engine
wear could result. Also backfiring
could cause a fire in the engine
compartment.
Be careful not to scratch the glass
surface with the wiper frame.
When closing the engine hood,
check to see that you have not for-
gotten any tools, rags, etc.

5 INSPECT SPEED SENSOR AND SENSOR ROTOR SERRATIONS
INSPECTION USING OSCILLOSCOPE
(a) Connect the oscilloscope to terminal FR+ - FR- or FL+
- FL- of the skid control ECU.
(b) Drive the vehicle at about 19 mph (30 km/h), and check
the signal waveform.
OK:
A waveform as shown in a figure should be output.
HINT:
As the vehicle speed (wheel revolution speed) increases,
a cycle of the waveform narrows and the fluctuation in the
output voltage becomes greater.
When noise is identified in the waveform on the oscillo-
scope, error signals are generated due to the speed sen-
sor rotor's scratches, looseness or foreign matter at-
tached to it.

6 INSPECT FRONT SPEED SENSOR INSTALLATION
(a) Check the speed sensor installation.
OK:
The installation bolt is tightened properly.
Torque: 8.0 NVm (82 kgfVcm, 71 in.Vlbf)
There is no clearance between the sensor and the
front steering knuckle.
NOTICE:
Check the speed sensor signal after the replacement
(see page 05-765).

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT:
When U0121/94, U0123/62, U0124/95 or U0126/63 are output together with C1231/31, inspect and
repair the trouble areas indicated by U0121/94, U0123/62, U0124/95 or U0126/63 first.
When the speed sensor or the yaw rate sensor has trouble, DTCs for the steering angle sensor may
be output even when the steering angle sensor is normal. When DTCs for the speed sensor or yaw
rate sensor are output together with other DTCs for the steering angle sensor, inspect and repair the
speed sensor and yaw rate sensor first, and then inspect and repair the steering angle sensor.
Start the inspection from step 1 when using the hand-held tester and start from step 2 when not using
the hand-held tester.
1 READ VALUE OF HAND-HELD TESTER(STEERING ANGLE SENSOR)
(a) Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
(b) Start the engine.
(c) Select the DATA LIST mode on the hand-held tester.
(d) Check that the steering angle value of the steering angle sensor indicated on the hand-held tester,
changes when the steering wheel is turned.
