Driving
The areas that vehicles can be detected in are outlined below.
To give the driver a more consistent time to react, the buzzer can alert
for faster vehicles from farther away.

■ Cautions regarding the use of the system
The driver is solely responsible for safe driving. Always drive safely, taking
care to observe your surroundings.
The RCTA function is only an assist and is not a replacement fo r careful
driving. Driver must be careful when backing up, even when usin g RCTA
function. The driver’s own visual confirmation of behind you an d your vehi-
cle is necessary and be sure there are no pedestrians, other ve hicles etc.
before backing up. Failure to do so could cause death or seriou s injury.
According to conditions, the system may not function correctly. Therefore
the driver’s own visual confirmation of safety is necessary.

■The RCTA function is operational when
●The RCTA function is turned on.
● The shift lever is in R.
● Vehicle speed is less than approximately 5 mph (8 km/h).
● Approaching vehicle speed is between approximately 5 mph (8 km/ h) and
18 mph (28 km/h).
■ Conditions under which the RCTA function will not detect a vehicle
The RCTA function is not designed to detect the following types of vehicles
and/or objects.
● Vehicles approaching from directly behind
● Vehicles backing up in the parking space next to your vehicle
● Guardrails, walls, signs, parked vehicles and similar stationar y objects

●Small motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians etc.*
●Vehicles moving away from your vehicle
● Vehicles approaching from the parking spaces next to your vehic le

●Vehicles which suddenly accelerate or decelerate near your vehi cle

■Conditions under which the RCTA function may not function corre ctly
● The RCTA function may not detect vehicles correctly in the following condi-
tions:
• When the sensor is misaligned due to a strong impact to the se nsor or its
surrounding area
• When mud, snow, ice, a sticker, etc. is covering the sensor or surround-
ing area on the rear bumper
• When driving on a road surface that is wet with standing water during bad
weather, such as heavy rain, snow, or fog
• When multiple vehicles are approaching with only a small gap b etween
each vehicle
• When a vehicle is approaching at high speed
• When parking on a steep incline, such as hills, a dip in the r oad etc.
• Directly after the RCTA function is turned on
• Immediately after the engine is started with the RCTA function on
• When towing a trailer • When backing up on a slope with a
sharp change in grade
• When backing out of a shallow angle parking spot
• When a vehicle turns into the detec- tion area

●Instances of the RCTA function unnecessarily detecting a vehicl e and/or
object may increase in the following situations:
• When a vehicle passes by the side of your vehicle
■ When “Rear Cross Traffic Alert Unavailable” is shown on the mul ti-infor-
mation display
Water, snow, mud, etc., may be built up in the vicinity of the sensor area of
bumper. ( P. 306) Removing the water, snow, mud, etc., from the vicinity of
the sensor area bumper should return it to normal.
Also, the sensor may not function normally when used in extreme ly hot or
cold weather.
■ Setting up BSM function/RCTA function
You can change the BSM function/RCTA function settings. (Custom izable
features: P. 540) • Vehicles that the sensors cannot
detect due to obstructions
• When the parking space faces a street and vehicles are being driven
on the street
• When a vehicle passes by the side of your vehicle
• When the distance between your vehicle and metal objects, such as a
guardrail, wall, sign, or parked vehi-
cle, which may reflect electrical
waves toward the rear of the vehicle,
is short

The distance from your vehicle to nearby obstacles when paral-
lel parking or maneuvering into a garage is measured by the
sensors and communicated via t he multi-information display,
the audio/visual system screen and a buzzer. Always check the
surrounding area when using this system.

■Muting the buzzer sound
●To mute the buzzer sound
The buzzer can be temporarily muted by pressing of the meter c ontrol
switches while an obstacle detection display is shown on the mu lti-informa-
tion display.
● To cancel the mute
Mute will be automatically canceled in the following situations .
• When the shift position is changed
• When the vehicle speed has reached or exceeded approximately 6 mph
(10 km/h) with the shift lever in D
• When the intuitive parking assist is turned off once and turned on again
• Vehicles without a smart key system: When the engine switch is turned
off once and turned to “ON” position again
Vehicles with a smart key system: When the engine switch is tur ned off
once and turned to IGNITION ON mode again
• When a sensor is malfunctioning

■Buzzer operation and di stance to an obstacle
A buzzer sounds when the sensors are operating.
● The buzzer sounds faster as the vehicle approaches an obstacle.
When the vehicle comes within the following distance of the
obstacle, the buzzer sounds continuously.
• Front and rear corner sensors : Approximately 0.8 ft. (25 cm)
• Rear center sensors: Approximately 1.1 ft. (35 cm)
● When 2 or more obstacles are detected simultaneously, the
buzzer system responds to the nearest obstacle. If one or both
come within the above distances , the beep will repeat a long
tone, followed by fast beeps.

■The intuitive parking assist can be operated when
●The engine switch is in the “ON” position (vehicles without a s mart key sys-
tem) or IGNITION ON mode (vehicles with a smart key system).
● Front corner sensors:
• The shift lever is not in P.
• The vehicle speed is approximately 6 mph (10 km/h) or less.
● Rear corner and rear center sensors:
The shift lever is in R.
■ Intuitive parking assist display
When an obstacle is detected while the rear view monitor system or pan-
oramic view monitor (if equipped) is in use, the warning indica tor will appear
in the upper part of the screen even if the display setting has been set to off.
■ Sensor detection information
●The sensor’s detection areas are limited to the areas around th e vehicle’s
bumper.
● Depending on the shape of the obstacle and other factors, the detection dis-
tance may shorten, or detection may be impossible.
● Obstacles may not be detected if they are too close to the sens or.
● There will be a short delay between obstacle detection and disp lay. Even at
slow speeds, there is a possibility that the obstacle will come within the sen-
sor’s detection.
● Thin posts or objects lower than the sensor may not be detected when
approached, even if they have been detected once.
● It might be difficult to hear beeps due to the volume of audio/ visual system
or air flow noise of the air conditioning system.

■When using the Intuiti ve parking assist-sensor
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in the vehicle being unable to be d riven safely
and possibly cause an accident.
● Do not use the sensor at speeds in excess of 6 mph (10 km/h).
● The sensors’ detection areas and reaction times are limited. When moving
forward or reversing, check the areas surrounding the vehicle ( especially
the sides of the vehicle) for safety, and drive slowly, using t he brake to
control the vehicle’s speed.
● Do not install accessories within the sensors’ detection areas.
