From outside
Open the back door and pull the
lock release strap to fold down
the third seats.
■ Returning the third seats
Lift up the seatbacks until they lock.
Remove the outside seat belts from the seat belt hangers.
WARNING
■ When folding the rear seatbacks down
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
● Do not fold the seatbacks down while driving.
● Stop the vehicle on level ground, set the parking brake and shift the shift
lever to “P” (Multidrive) or “1” (manual transmission).
● Do not allow anyone to sit on a folded seatback or in the luggage compart-
ment while driving.
● Do not allow children to enter the luggage compartment.

Driving the vehicle
The following procedures should be observed to ensure safe driv-
ing.
■ Starting the engine (P. 198, 202)
■ Driving
Multidrive
With the brake pedal depressed, shift the shift lever to “D”
or “M”. ( P. 208)
Release the parking brake. ( P. 219)
Gradually release the brake pedal and gently depress the
accelerator pedal to accelerate the vehicle.
Manual transmission
With the clutch pedal fully depressed, shift the shift lever to
“1”. ( P. 214)
Release the parking brake. ( P. 219)
Gradually release the clutch pedal. At the same time, gently
depress the accelerator pedal to accelerate the vehicle.
■ Stopping
Multidrive
With the shift lever in “D” or “M”, depress the brake pedal.
If necessary, set the parking brake.
When the vehicle is stopped for an extended period of time, shift
the shift lever to “P” or “N”. ( P. 208)
Manual transmission
With the clutch pedal fully depressed, depress the brake
pedal.
If necessary, set the parking brake.
When the vehicle is stopped for an extended period of time, shift
the shift lever to “N”. ( P. 214)

■ Parking the vehicle
Multidrive
With the shift lever in “D” or “M”, depress the brake pedal.
Set the parking brake. ( P. 219)
Shift the shift lever to “P”. ( P. 208)
When parking on a hill, if necessary, block the wheels.
Vehicles without smart entry & start system: Turn the
engine switch to the “LOCK” position and stop the engine.
Vehicles with smart entry & start system: Turn the “ENGINE
START STOP” switch off and stop the engine.
Lock the door, making sure that you have the key on your
person.
Manual transmission
With the clutch pedal fully depressed, depress the brake
pedal.
Set the parking brake. ( P. 219)
Shift the shift lever to “N”. ( P. 214)
When parking on a hill, shift the shift lever to “1” or “R”. If neces-
sary, block the wheels.
Vehicles without smart entry & start system: Turn the
engine switch to the “LOCK” position and stop the engine.
Vehicles with smart entry & start system: Turn the “ENGINE
START STOP” switch off and stop the engine.
Lock the door, making sure that you have the key on your
person.

Starting on a steep uphill
Multidrive
Firmly set the parking brake and shift the shift lever to “D” or
“M”.
Gently depress the accelerator pedal.
Release the parking brake.
Manual transmission
With the parking brake set and the clutch pedal fully
depressed, shift the shift lever to “1”.
Lightly depress the accelerator pedal at the same time as
gradually releasing the clutch pedal.
Release the parking brake.
■ Hill-start assist control
The hill-start assist control allows you to smoothly start off the vehicle on a
steep or slippery uphill incline. ( P. 316)
■ Driving in the rain
● Drive carefully when it is raining, because visibility will be reduced, the
windows may become fogged-up, and the road will be slippery.
● Drive carefully when it starts to rain, because the road surface will be
especially slippery.
● Refrain from high speeds when driving on an expressway in the rain,
because there may be a layer of water between the tires and the road
surface, preventing the steering and brakes from operating properly.

NOTICE
■ When driving the vehicle
Vehicles with a Multidrive
● Do not depress the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time during
driving, as this may restrain the engine output.
● Do not use the accelerator pedal or depress the accelerator and brake
pedals at the same time to hold the vehicle on a hill.
Vehicles with a manual transmission
● Do not depress the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time during
driving, as this may restrain driving torque.
● Do not shift gears unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed. After shifting,
do not release the clutch pedal abruptly. Doing so may damage the clutch,
transmission and gears.
● Observe the following to prevent the clutch from being damaged.
• Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving.
Doing so may cause clutch trouble.
• Do not use any gears other than the 1st gear when starting off and
moving forward.
Doing so may damage the clutch.
• Do not use the clutch to hold the vehicle when stopping on an uphill
grade.
Doing so may damage the clutch.
● Do not shift the shift lever to “R” when the vehicle is still moving. Doing so
may damage the clutch, transmission and gears.
■ When parking the vehicle (vehicles with a Multidrive)
Always put the shift lever in “P”. Failure to do so may cause the vehicle to
move or the vehicle may accelerate suddenly if the accelerator pedal is acci-
dentally depressed.

Engine (ignition) switch (vehicles without smart entry & start system)
■Starting the engine
Multidrive
Check that the parking brake is set.
Check that the shift lever is set in “P”.
Sit in the driver’s seat and firmly depress the brake pedal.
Turn the engine switch to the “START” position and start
the engine.
Manual transmission (gasoline engine)
Check that the parking brake is set.
Check that the shift lever is set in “N”.
Sit in the driver’s seat and firmly depress the clutch pedal.
Turn the engine switch to the “START” position and start
the engine.
Manual transmission (diesel engine)
Check that the parking brake is set.
Check that the shift lever is set in “N”.
Sit in the driver’s seat and firmly depress the clutch pedal.
Turn the engine switch to the “ON” position.
indicator light turns on.
After indicator light goes out, turn the engine switch
to the “START” position and start the engine.

Manual transmission
Check that the parking brake is set.
Check that the shift lever is set in “N”.
Sit in the driver’s seat and firmly depress the clutch pedal.
The “ENGINE START STOP” switch indicator turns green.
Press the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch.
The engine can be started
from any “ENGINE START
STOP” switch mode.
Continue depressing the clutch
pedal until the engine is com-
pletely started. The engine will
crank until it starts or for up to
30 seconds, whichever is less.
Diesel engine only: indi-
cator turns on. The engine
begins starting after the indica-
tor light goes out.

■ Changing “ENGINE START STOP” switch mode
Modes can be changed by pressing the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch with the brake pedal (Multidrive) or clutch pedal
(manual transmission) released. (The mode changes each time
the switch is pressed.)
Off*
Emergency flashers can be
used.
ACCESSORY mode
Some electrical components
such as the audio system can

The “ENGINE START STOP”

*: For vehicles with a Multidrive, if the shift lever is in a position other than
“P” when turning off the engine, the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will
be turned to ACCESSORY mode, not to off.
