In order to be effective, the SRS airbags must deploy
with tremendous speed. The rapid deployment of the
SRS airbags makes the SRS airbags themselves poten-
tial sources of serious injury if an occupant is too close
to an airbag, or if an object or some part of his or her
body has been placed between the occupant and the
airbag at the time of deployment. This is just one exam-
ple of how the instructions in Section 1−3 of this Own-
er ’s Manual will help ensure proper use of the occupant
restraint systems, and increase the safety they can pro-
vide to you and your family in the event of an accident.
Scion recommends you to read the provisions in Section
1 −3 carefully and refer to them as needed during your
time of ownership of this vehicle.Event data recorder
Your vehicle has computers that monitor and control
certain aspects of your vehicle. These computers assist
in driving and maintaining optimal vehicle performance.
Besides storing data useful for troubleshooting, there is
a system to record data in a crash or a near car crash
event. This is called an Event Data Recorder (EDR).
The SRS airbag sensor assembly contains the EDR. In
a crash or a near car crash event, this device records
some or all of the following information:
Engine speed
Whether the brake pedal was applied or not
Vehicle speed
To what extent the accelerator pedal was depressed
Position of the transmission selector lever
Whether the driver and front passenger wore the
seat belts or not
Driver ’s seat position
Front passenger ’s occupant classification

The displayed values in the multi−informa-
tion display indicate general driving condi-
tions. Accuracy varies with driving habits
and road conditions.
When the engine switch is on, the last
previously used mode displayed just be-
fore the engine switch is off will appear.
If the electrical power source has been
disconnected from the multi −information
display, the display will automatically be
set to the initial mode.
When the headlight switch is turned on,
the brightness of the display will be re-
duced.
You can adjust the brightness of the dis-
play. To adjust the brightness, see “Instru-
ment panel light control” on page 88.
CAUTION
Do not operate the switches while the
vehicle is moving. Make sure to oper-
ate the switches when the vehicle is
stopped.
1. Clock
To adjust the clock, the engine switch
must be in the “ON” position and the ve-
hicle must be stopped.
Pushing the “DISP” switch flashes the in-
dicator for the minute and you can adjust
the minute.
Press the “DISP” switch until the desired
minute will appear.
After 5 or more seconds pass without op-
erating, the indicator for the hour flashes.
Then you can adjust the hour.
Press the “DISP” switch until the desired
hour will appear.
After 5 or more seconds pass without op-
erating, the indicator will return to the nor-
mal display.
If quick adjustment to a full hour is de-
sired, push the “DISP” switch for 1 sec-
ond.
For example, if the “DISP” switch is de-
pressed when the time is between
1:01—1:29, the time will change to 1:00.
If the time is between 1:30—1:59, the
time will change to 2:00.
If the electrical power source has been
disconnected from the clock, the time dis-
play will automatically be set to 1:00. 2. Outside temperature display
(“C” or “ F”)
The display indicates between the range
of –30 C (–22 F) and 50 C (122 F).
Each time you push the “DISP” switch for
1 second, the display switches between
“ C” and “ F”.
If an abnormality exists in the connection
of the outside air temperature sensor, “––”
will appear on the display. If “––” appears,
contact your Scion dealer.
3. Instantaneous fuel consumption (“MPG”)
The instantaneous fuel consumption is
calculated and displayed based on dis-
tance and fuel consumption with the
engine running.
Note that an accurate figure may not be
shown in the following cases.
The vehicle is stopped with the engine
running. (The display will indicate the
extremely high fuel consumption.)
The vehicle is driving down a long
slope, applying the engine brake. (The
display will indicate the extremely low
fuel consumption.)
The calculation is reset when the engine
switch is turned off.
