Using the key (type B)
Releasing
To release the key, press the but-
ton.
Folding
To stow the key back in its case,
push the key back to the stowed
position while pressing the but-
ton.
■When required to leave the vehicle’s key with a parking attendant (type
A [with an engine immobilizer system])
Carry the master key for your own use and provide the attendant with the
valet key.
■ Key number plate
Keep the plate in a safe place such as your wallet, not in the vehicle. In the
event that a key is lost, a new key can be made by your Scion dealer using
the key number plate. ( P. 323)
■ When riding in an aircraft
When bringing a key with wireless remote control function onto an aircra\
ft,
make sure you do not press any buttons on the key while inside the aircraft
cabin. If you are carrying the key in your bag etc., ensure that the buttons
are not likely to be pressed accidentally. Pressing a button may cause the
key to emit radio waves that could interfere with the operation of the a\
ircraft.

Engine immobilizer system
: If equipped
■System maintenance
The vehicle has a maintenance-free type engine immobilizer system.
■ Conditions that may cause the system to malfunction
● If the grip portion of the key is in contact with a metallic object
● If the key is in close proximity to or touching a key to the security system
(key with a built-in transponder chip) of another vehicle
■ Certifications for the engine imm obilizer system (for vehicles sold in
Canada)
This device complies with Industry Canada licence-exempt RSS stan-
dard(s). Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) this device
may not cause interference, and (2) this device must accept any interfer-
ence, including interference that may cause undesired operation of the
device.
The vehicle’s keys have built-in tr ansponder chips that prevent the
engine from starting if a key has not been previously registered in
the vehicle’s on-board computer.
Never leave the keys inside the vehicle when you leave the vehicle.

Changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible
for compliance could void the user’s authority to operate the equipment.
NOTICE
■To ensure the system operates correctly
Do not modify or remove the system. If modified or removed, the proper
operation of the system cannot be guaranteed.

■Turning the key from “ACC” to “LOCK”
Shift the shift lever to P (automatic transmission) or N (manual
transmission). ( P. 123, 127)
■ If the engine does not start
The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. ( P. 65)
■ Changing engine switch position

Indicators
The indicators inform the driver of the operating state of the
vehicle’s various systems.
*1: These lights turn on when the engine switch is turned to the “ON” posi-
tion to indicate that a system check is being performed. They will turn
off after the engine is started, or after a few seconds. There may be a
malfunction in a system if a light does not come on, or if the lights do
not turn off. Have the vehicle inspected by your Scion dealer for
details.
*2: The light flashes to indicate that the system is operating.

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency

If the engine will not star t
If the engine will not start even though correct starting procedures
are being followed ( P. 119), consider each of the following points:
■The engine will not start even though the starter motor
operates normally.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
●There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle.
● The engine may be flooded.
Try to restart the engine again following correct starting proce-
dures. ( P. 1 1 9 )
● Vehicles with engine immobilizer system: There may be a
malfunction in the engine immobilizer system. (P. 6 5 )
■ The starter motor turns over slowly, the interior lights and
headlights are dim, or the horn does not sound or sounds at
a low volume.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
●The battery may be discharged. ( P. 324)
● The battery terminal connec tions may be loose or corroded.
■ The starter motor does not turn over, the interior lights and
headlights do not turn on, or the horn does not sound.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
● One or both of the battery terminals may be disconnected.
● The battery may be discharged. ( P. 324)
Contact your Scion dealer if the problem cannot be repaired, or if
repair procedures are unknown.
