CAUTION
■To avoid operating the cruise control by mistake
Switch the cruise control off using the “ON-OFF” button when not in use.
■ Situations unsuitable for cruise control
Do not use cruise control in any of the following situations. 
Doing so may result in loss of control and could cause an accident resulting
in death or serious injury.
● In heavy traffic
● On roads with sharp bends
● On winding roads
● On slippery roads, such as those covered with rain, ice or snow
● On steep hills 
Vehicle speed may exceed the set speed when driving down a steep hill.
● During emergency towing

Emergency towingIf a tow truck is not available in
an emergency, your vehicle may
be temporarily towed using a
cable or chain secured to the
emergency towing eyelet. This
should only be attempted on
hard surfaced roads for short
distances at low speeds.
A driver must be in the vehicle to
steer and operate the brakes.
The vehicle’s wheels, drive train,
axles, steering and brakes must
be in good condition.

Using a flatbed truckIf you use chains or cables to tie
down your vehicle, the angles
shaded in black must be 45.
Do not overly tighten the tie
downs or the vehicle may be

■ Before emergency towing
Release the parking brake.
Shift the shift lever to N.
Turn the engine switch to the “ACC” (engine off) or “ON” (engine
running) position.

CAUTION
■Caution while towing
● Use extreme caution when towing the vehicle.
Avoid sudden starts or erratic driving maneuvers which place excessive
stress on the emergency towing eyelets and the cables or chains. Always
be cautious of the surroundings and other vehicles while towing.
● If the engine is not running, the power assist for the brakes and steering
will not function, making steering and braking more difficult.

■
Installing towing eyelets to the vehicle
Make sure that towing eyelets are installed securely. 
If not securely installed, towing eyelets may come loose during towing. This
may lead to accidents that cause serious injury or even death.
NOTICE
■ To prevent causing serious damage to the transmission when towing
using a wheel-lift type truck (vehicles with an automatic transmission)
Never tow this vehicle from the rear with the front wheels on the ground.
■ To prevent damage to the vehicle wh en towing using a wheel-lift type
truck (vehicles with a manual transmission)
● Do not tow the vehicle from the rear when the engine switch is in the
“LOCK” position or the key is removed. The steering lock mechanism is
not strong enough to hold the front wheels straight.
● When raising the vehicle, ensure adequate ground clearance for towing at
the opposite end of the raised vehicle. Without adequate clearance, the
vehicle could be damaged while being towed.
■ To prevent body damage when towing with a sling-type truck
Do not tow with a sling-type truck, either from the front or rear.
■ To prevent causing serious damage to the transmission in emergency
towing
Vehicles with an automatic transmission, never tow a vehicle from the rear
with four wheels on the ground. This may cause serious damage to the
transmission.

If you have a flat tire
Remove the flat tire and replace it with the spare provided.
■Before jacking up the vehicle
●Stop the vehicle on a hard, flat surface.
● Set the parking brake.
● Shift the shift lever to P (automatic transmission) or R (manual
transmission).
● Stop the engine.
● Turn on the emergency flashers.

Stowing the flat tire
Pass the belt through the two of
anchor brackets. Then return the
luggage storage box to the origi-
nal position.
Lay the flat tire on the luggage
floor so that the outer side of the
wheel faces toward the rear of
the vehicle. Pass the belt
through the center hole of the
wheel as shown above.
Pass the belt in front of the rear
center head restraint as shown
and attach the belt end.

Hold the buckle and pull the belt
to secure the tire. 
After stowing the flat tire, check
that the tire and belt are secured.STEP 4
■The compact spare tire
●The compact spare tire saves in your luggage compartment.
●Its lighter weight helps to enhance fuel economy.
●It permits easier installation in case of a flat tire.
●Make sure to check the tire inflation pressu re of the compact spare
tire. ( P. 343)
■After completing the tire change
The tire pressure warnin g system must be reset. ( P. 237)
■When using the compact spare tire
As the compact spare tire is not equipped with a tire pressure warning
valve and transmitter, low inflation pressure of the spare tire will not be
indicated by the tire pressure warn ing system. Also, if you replace the
compact spare tire after the tire pressure warning light comes on, the
light remains on.

CAUTION
■Replacing a flat tire
●Do not touch the disc wheels or the area around the brakes immedi-
ately after the vehicle has been driven.

After the vehicle has been driven the disc wheels and the area around
the brakes will be extremely hot. T ouching these areas with hands, feet
or other body parts while changing a tire, etc. may result in burns.
●Failure to follow these precautions could cause the wheel nuts to
loosen and the tire to fall off, resulting in death or serious injury.
• Have the wheel nuts tightened with a torque wrench to 76 ft•lbf
(103 N
•m, 10.5 kgf•m) as soon as possible after changing wheels.
• When installing a tire, only use wheel nuts that have been specifically designed for that wheel.
• If there are any cracks or deformations in the bolt screws, nut threads or bolt holes of the wheel, have the vehicle inspected by your Scion
dealer.
• When installing the wheel nuts, be sure to install them with the tapered ends facing inward. ( P. 249)
■
After using the tools and jack
Before driving, make sure all the tools and jack are securely in place in
their storage location to reduce the po ssibility of personal injury during a
collision or sudden braking.
■When stowing the flat tire
●Make sure the rear seats are in their original position.
●When carrying the flat tire, secure it using a tire tie-down belts. Other-
wise, the flat tire may fly out in case of the sudden braking or an acci-
dent, resulting in death or serious injury.

NOTICE
■To avoid damage to the transmission and other components
● Avoid spinning the wheels and depressing the accelerator pedal more
than necessary.
● If the vehicle remains stuck even after these procedures are performed,
the vehicle may require towing to be freed.
