Set the mode selector dial to the position.
Set the temperature control dial to the cold position.
Set the fan control dial to the desired speed.
Turn on the air conditioner by pressing the A/C switch.
After cooling begins, adjust the fan control dial and temperature
control dial as needed to maintain maximum comfort.
● When maximum cooling is desired, set the temperature control di al to the
extreme cold position and set the air intake selector to the re circulated air
position, then turn the fan control dial fully clockwise.
● If warmer air is desired at floor level, set the mode selector dial to the
position and adjust the temperature control dial to maintain ma ximum com-
fort.
● The air to the floor is warmer than air to the face (except when the tempera-
ture control dial is set at the extreme hot or cold position).

NOTICE
If the air conditioner is used while driving up long hills or in heavy traffic,
monitor the engine coolant temperature warning light to see if it is illumi-
nated or flashing ( P. 154).
The air conditioner may cause engine overheating. If the warnin g light is
illuminated or flashing, turn the air-conditioning off ( P. 517).

Maintenance and Care
Owner Maintenance Precautions
The owner or a qualified service technician should make these vehicle
inspections at the indicated intervals to ensure safe and depen dable
operation.
Bring any problem to the attention of your Toyota dealer or qua lified
service technician a s soon as possible.
■When Refueling
• Brake and clutch fluid level ( P. 448)
• Engine coolant level ( P. 4 4 5 )
• Engine oil level ( P. 444)
• Washer fluid level ( P. 449)
■At Least Monthly
• Tire inflation pressures ( P. 459)
■At Least Twice a Year (For Exam ple, Every Spring and Fall)
You can do the following scheduled maintenance items if you hav e
some mechanical ability and a few basic tools and if you closel y fol-
low the directions in this manual.
• Engine coolant ( P. 445)
• Engine oil ( P. 442)
Improper or incomplete service may result in problems. This sec tion
gives instructions only for it ems that are easy to perform.
As explained in the Introduction ( P. 432), several procedures can be
done only by a qualifi ed service technician with special tools.
Improper owner maintenance during the warranty period may affec t
warranty coverage. Refer to Introduction ( P. 432) for owner’s
responsibility in protecting your investment. For details, read the sep-
arate Toyota Warranty and Maintenance Guide provided with the v ehi-
cle. If you are unsure about any servicing or maintenance proce dure,
have it done by your Toyota dealer.
There are strict environmental laws regarding the disposal of w aste oil
and fluids. Please dispose of your waste properly and with due regard
to the environment.
We recommend that you entrust the oil and fluid changes of your vehi-
cle to your Toyota dealer.

Engine Coolant
Inspect the antifreeze protection and coolant level in the cool ant res-
ervoir at least once a year—at the beginning of the winter seas on—
and before traveling where temperatures may drop below freezing .
Inspect the condition and connec tions of all cooling system and
heater hoses.
Replace any that are sw ollen or deteriorated.
The coolant should be at full in the
radiator and between the F and L
marks on the coolant reservoir
when the engine is cool. Cooling fan

Coolant reservoir
If it is at or near L, add enough coolant to the coolant reserv oir to pro-
vide freezing and corrosion prote ction and to bring the level to F.
Securely tighten the coolant re servoir tank cap after adding co olant.
If the coolant reservoir is empty or new coolant is required frequently,
consult your Toyota dealer.
Changing the coolant should be done by your Toyota dealer.

6
If Trouble Arises
Overheating
If the high engine coolant temperature warning light turns on:
Drive safely to the side of the road and park off the right-of-way.
Put a vehicle with an automatic t ransaxle in park (P), a manual tran-
saxle in neutral.
Apply the parking brake.
Turn off the air conditioner.
Check whether coolant or steam is escaping from the engine com-
partment.
If steam is coming from the engine compartment
Do not go near the front of t he vehicle. Stop the engine.
Wait until the steam dissipates, then open the hood and start the
engine.
If neither coolant nor steam is escaping
Open the hood and idle t he engine until it cools.
Make sure the cooling fan is operating, then turn off the engin e after
the temperature has decreased.
When cool, check th e coolant level.
If it is low, look for coolant lea ks from the radiator and hoses.
■If you find a leak or other damage, or if coolant is still leak ing:
Stop the engine and call your Toyota dealer.

If the high engine coolant temperature warning light turns on,
the vehicle loses power, or you hear a loud knocking or pinging
noise, the engine is probably too hot.

5256-7. Warning/Indicator Lights and Warning Sounds
6
If Trouble Arises
■Power Steering Malfunction Indicator Light
●If the indicator light illuminates/flashes, the power steering will not operate
normally. If this happens, the steering wheel can still be oper ated, however,
the operation may feel heavy compared to normal, or the steering wheel
could vibrate when turning.
● Repeatedly jerking the steering wheel left and right while the vehicle is
stopped or moving extremely slowly will cause the power steerin g system to
go into protective mode which will make the steering feel heavy , but this
does not indicate a problem. If this occurs, park the vehicle safely and wait
several minutes for the system to return to normal.
WARNING
■ Do not drive with the brake system warning light illuminated. C ontact
your Toyota dealer to have the brakes inspected as soon as poss ible
Driving with the brake system warning light illuminated is dang erous. It indi-
cates that your brakes may not work at all or that they could c ompletely fail
at any time. If this light remains illuminated, after checking that the parking
brake is fully released, have the brakes inspected immediately.
In addition, the effectiveness of the braking may diminish so y ou may need
to depress the brake pedal more strongly than normal to stop th e vehicle.
■ Do not drive with both the ABS warning light and brake warning light
illuminated. Have the vehicle towed to your Toyota dealer to have the
brakes inspected as soon as possible
Driving when the brake system warning light and ABS warning lig ht are illu-
minated simultaneously is dangerous.
When both lights are illuminated, the rear wheels could lock mo re quickly in
an emergency stop than under normal circumstances.
NOTICE
■ Charging System Warning Light
Do not continue driving when the charging system warning light is illumi-
nated because the engine could stop unexpectedly.
■ Engine Oil Warning Light
● Do not run the engine if the oil pressure is low. Otherwise, it could result in
extensive engine damage.
● Do not run the engine if the oil level is low. Otherwise, it co uld result in
extensive engine damage.
■ High Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Light
Do not drive the vehicle with the high engine coolant temperatu re warning
light illuminated. Otherwise, it could result in damage to the engine.
