■ Effective range (areas within which the electronic key is detected)
The system can be operated when the electronic key is inside the vehi-
cle.
■ Alarms and warning indicators
Vehicles with monochrome display: A combination of exterior and interior
alarms as well as warning lights are used to prevent theft of the vehicle and
unforeseeable accidents resulting from erroneous operation. Take appropri-
ate measures for the warning light that comes on. ( P. 585)
Vehicles with color display: A combination of exterior and interior buzzers as
well as warning messages shown on the multi-information display are used to
prevent theft of the vehicle and accidents resulting from erroneous operation.
Take appropriate measures based on the displayed message. ( →P. 587)
The following table describes circumstances and correction procedures when
only alarms are sounded.
When locking or unlocking the doors
The system can be operated when
the electronic key is within about
0.7 m (2.3 ft.) either of the outside
front door handles and back door.
(Only the doors detecting the key can
be operated.)
When starting the engine or chang-

An attempt was made to lock either front door by
opening a door and putting the inside lock button
into the lock position, then closing the door by
pulling on the outside door handle with the elec-
tronic key still inside the vehicle.

■ When the smart entry & start system indicator flashes in yellow (vehicles
with monochrome display) or “Check entry & start system.” is displayed
on the multi-information displ ay (vehicles with color display)
The system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by any autho-
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer
immediately.
■ Battery-saving function
The battery-saving function will be activated in order to prevent the electronic
key battery and the vehicle battery from being discharged while the vehicle is
not in operation for a long time.
● In the following situations, the smart entry & start system may take some
time to unlock the doors.
• The electronic key has been left in an area of approximately 2 m (6 ft.) of
the outside of the vehicle for 10 minutes or longer.
• The smart entry & start system has not been used for 5 days or longer.
● If the smart entry & start system has not been used for 14 days or longer,
the doors cannot be unlocked at any doors except the driver’s door.
In this case, take hold of the driver’s door handle, or use the wireless remote
control or the mechanical key, to unlock the doors.

● Vehicles with monochrome display: If the electronic key is inside the vehicle
and a door handle becomes wet during a car wash, a buzzer will sound out-
side the vehicle. To turn off the alarm, lock all the doors.
● Vehicles with color display: If the electronic key is inside the vehicle and a
door handle becomes wet during a car wash, a message may be shown on
the multi-information display and a buzzer will sound outside the vehicle. To
turn off the alarm, lock all the doors.
● The lock sensor may not work properly if it comes into contact with ice,
snow, mud, etc. Clean the lock sensor and attempt to operate it again.
● A sudden handle operation or a handle operation immediately after entering
the effective range may prevent the doors from being unlocked. Touch the
door unlock sensor and check that the doors are unlocked before pulling the
door handle again.
● If there is another electronic key in the detection area, it may take slightly
longer to unlock the doors after the door handle is gripped.
■ When the vehicle is not driven for extended periods
● To prevent theft of the vehicle, do not leave the electronic key within 2 m
(6 ft.) of the vehicle.
● The smart entry & start system can be deactivated in advance. (P. 671)

Engine (ignition) switch (vehicles with a
smart entry & start system)
Check that the parking brake is set.
Check that the shift lever is set in P (Multidrive) or N (manual trans-
mission).
Vehicles with monochrome display
Firmly depress the brake pedal (Multidrive) or clutch pedal (manual
transmission).
The smart entry & start system indicator (green) will turn on.
If the indicator light does not turn on, the engine cannot be started.
Press the engine switch shortly
and firmly.
When operating the engine switch,
one short, firm press is enough.
It is not necessary to press and
hold the switch.
The engine will crank until it starts
or for up to 30 seconds, whichever
is less.
Continue depressing the brake
pedal (Multidrive) or clutch pedal
(manual transmission) until the
engine is completely started.
Diesel engine only: The
indicator turns on. The engine will
start after the indicator light goes
out.
The engine can be started from
any engine switch mode.
Performing the following operations when carrying the elec-
tronic key on your person starts the engine or changes engine
switch mode.

Stop the vehicle.
Set the parking brake ( P. 268) and shift the shift lever to P (Multi-
drive) or N (manual transmission).
Press the engine switch.
Vehicles with monochrome display: Release the brake pedal (Multi-
drive) or clutch pedal (manual transmission) and check that the
smart entry & start system indicator (green) is off.
Vehicles with color display: Release the brake pedal (Multidrive) or
clutch pedal (manual transmission) and check that “Power on” on
the multi-information display is off.
Modes can be changed by pressing the engine switch with brake
pedal (Multidrive) or clutch pedal (manual transmission) released.
(The mode changes each time the switch is pressed.)

If the engine is stopped with the shift lever in a position other than P,
the engine switch will not be turned off but instead be turned to
ACCESSORY mode. Perform the following procedure to turn the
switch off:
Check that the parking brake is set.
Shift the shift lever to P.
Vehicles with monochrome display
Check that the smart entry & start system indicator (green) flashes
slowly and then press the engine switch once.
Check that the smart entry & start system indicator (green) is off.
Vehicles with color display
Check that “Power on” and “Turn power OFF.” are displayed alter-
nately on the multi-information display and then press the engine
switch once.
Check that “Power on” and “Turn power OFF.” on the multi-informa-
tion display are off.
When stopping the engine with the shift lever in a position other
than P (Multidrive)

■Auto power off function
Vehicles with a Multidrive
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode (the engine is
not running) for more than an hour with the shift lever in P, the engine
switch will automatically turn off. However, this function cannot entirely pre-
vent battery discharge. Do not leave the vehicle with the engine switch in
ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode for long periods of time when the
engine is not running.
Vehicles with a manual transmission
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode (the engine is
not running) for more than an hour, the engine switch will automatically turn
off. However, this function cannot entirely prevent battery discharge. Do not
leave the vehicle with the engine switch in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON
mode for long periods of time when the engine is not running.

■ If the engine does not start
● The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. (P. 8 3 )
Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any
reliable repairer.
● Check that the shift lever is securely set in P. The engine may not start if the
shift lever is displaced out of P.
Vehicles with monochrome display
The smart entry & start system indicator light (green) will flash quickly.
Vehicles with color display
“Shift to P position to start.” will be displayed on the multi-information dis-
play.

■ Steering lock
After turning the engine switch off and opening and closing the doors, the
steering wheel will be locked due to the steering lock function. Operating the
engine switch again automatically cancels the steering lock.
■ When the steering lock cannot be released
Vehicles with a manual transmission
Press the engine switch while turning the steering wheel left and right.
■ Steering lock motor overheating prevention
To prevent the steering lock motor from overheating, the motor may be sus-
pended if the engine is turned on and off repeatedly in a short period of time.
In this case, refrain from operating the engine. After about 10 seconds, the
steering lock motor will resume functioning.

■ Operation of the engine switch
● If the switch is not pressed shortly and firmly, the engine switch mode may
not change or the engine may not start.
● If attempting to restart the engine immediately after turning the engine
switch off, the engine may not start in some cases. After turning the engine
switch off, please wait a few seconds before restarting the engine.

setting
