remove upper starter mounting bolt. Release handbrake (to allow axle
rotation) and raise vehicle on hoist.
2) Disconnect right rear axle from transmission and wire
aside. Cover exposed CV joint with plastic bag to prevent entry of
dirt or other foreign material.
3) Loosen clamp securing cooling hoses to chassis. Wire hoses
aside. Remove bolt "A" from differential lock servo. Loosen bolt "B"
and withdraw as far as possible. Lack of clearance prevents complete
removal of bolt "B". See Fig. 1.
NOTE: Nuts are welded to bracket. DO NOT attempt to loosen.Fig. 1: Removing Differential Lock Servo (Vanagon)

4) Push back protective sleeve and drive out spring pin. With
bolt "B" withdrawn as far as possible, give servo a slight upward
twist and remove from bracket. See Fig. 1.
5) Remove circlip, bracket securing bolts and bracket. See

3) If lever does not spring back, move housing slightly
sideways. If further adjustment is required, go to step 4).
4) Place gearshift lever in Neutral position. Place lever
bearing housing in center of elongated hole. Loosen shift rod clamp
nut. See Fig. 5. Ensure shift finger slides freely on shift rod.
Remove gearshift lever knob and shift boot.
5) Align centering holes of gearshift lever housing and
gearshift lever bearing housing. Tighten bolts. Install Gearshift
Aligner (3057) with locating pin in front centering hole of vehicle.

6) Place gearshift lever into left cutout of slide. Secure in
position by tightening lower knob. Move slide together with gearshift
lever to left side stop. Tighten upper knob.
7) Place gearshift lever into right cutout of slide (shift
position for 3rd/4th gears). Ensure transmission is in Neutral. Align

The voltage controlled driver inside the computer operates
much like a simple switch because it does not need to worry about
limiting current flow. Recall, this driver typically requires injector
circuits with a total leg resistance of 12 or more ohms.
The driver is either ON, closing/completing the circuit
(eliminating the voltage-drop), or OFF, opening the circuit (causing a
total voltage drop).
Some manufacturers call it a "saturated switch" driver. This
is because when switched ON, the driver allows the magnetic field in
the injector to build to saturation. This is the same "saturation"
property that you are familiar with for an ignition coil.
There are two ways "high" resistance can be built into an
injector circuit to limit current flow. One method uses an external
solenoid resistor and a low resistance injector, while the other uses
a high resistance injector without the solenoid resistor. See the left
side of Fig. 1.
In terms of injection opening time, the external resistor
voltage controlled circuit is somewhat faster than the voltage
controlled high resistance injector circuit. The trend, however, seems
to be moving toward use of this latter type of circuit due to its
lower cost and reliability. The ECU can compensate for slower opening
times by increasing injector pulse width accordingly.
NOTE: Never apply battery voltage directly across a low resistance
injector. This will cause injector damage from solenoid coil
overheating.Fig. 1: Injector Driver Types - Current and Voltage

1989-92 SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Wiper/Washer Systems
Cabriolet, Corrado, Fox, Golf,
GTI, Jetta, Passat, Vanagon
DESCRIPTION
All models are equipped with 2-speed wipers. A standard or
optional intermittent feature is also available. The wiper control is
the right lever on the steering column. Some models are equipped with
a rear wiper/washer system.
ADJUSTMENTS
WIPER BLADE
To adjust wiper blade park position, ensure wiper motor is at
park position. Locate wiper blade(s) above lower edge of windshield as
specified. See WIPER BLADE PARK POSITION SPECIFICATION table. Secure
wiper arm.
