1990 ENGINE PERFORMANCE
Theory & Operation - Digifant II
Volkswagen; Cabriolet, Corrado, Fox, Golf GL/GTI,
Jetta, Vanagon
INTRODUCTION
This article covers basic description and operation of engine
performance-related systems and components. Read this article before
diagnosing vehicles or systems with which you are not completely
familiar.
AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM
SUPERCHARGER (CORRADO)
The supercharger works like an air pump. Driven constantly
off the crankshaft by a toothed belt the supercharger compresses air.
This compressed or boosted air is cooled by an intercooler before
entering intake manifold.
Excess boost air is controlled by a mechanically operated
boost control valve and idle stabilizer. The boost control valve moves
in the opposite direction of the throttle valve. As throttle valve
opens boost control closes, directing most of the boost air back to
the supercharger intake. See Fig. 1.Fig. 1: Identifying Supercharger System Components

1990 ENGINE PERFORMANCE
Systems & Component Testing
Volkswagen; Cabriolet, Corrado, Fox, Golf GL/GTI,
Jetta, Vanagon
INTRODUCTION
Before testing separate components or systems, perform
procedures in F - BASIC TESTING and H - TESTS W/O CODES articles.
NOTE: Testing individual components does not isolate shorts or
opens. Perform all voltage tests with a Digital
Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input
impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use
ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
AIR INDUCTION SYSTEMS (SUPERCHARGER)
BOOST PRESSURE
1) Before checking supercharger boost pressure, ensure engine
idle speed is correct. See D - ADJUSTMENTS article. Ensure engine oil
temperature is 176øF (80øC). Check knock sensor operation. See KNOCK
SENSOR under IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM in this article.
2) Connect Pressure Gauge (VW1397) or equivalent to the
pressure regulator hose using adapter "T". Open pressure gauge check
valve to position "A" and start engine.
3) Remove harness connector from CO potentiometer and Blue
connector from temperature sensor (in front flange on cylinder head).
Accelerate to full throttle. Engine speed must increase periodically
then drop (surge). Watch pressure gauge, boost pressure must reach 8.7
psi (0.6 kg/cm
ý). If boost does not reach specification, check for
leaks in air system and correct by-pass valve setting. Check
supercharger.
COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS
NOTE: For fuel system used on model being tested, see FUEL SYSTEM
APPLICATION table.

sensor is free of contaminants, avoid using any cleaning solvents.
Sensor may be difficult to remove when engine temperature is less than
118øF (48øC). Always use anti-seize compound on threads before
installation. Tighten sensor to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
SUPERCHARGER (CORRADO)
Removal & Installation
Information on removal and installation is not available from
manufacturer. See Fig. 4 for exploded view of supercharger assembly.Fig. 4: Supercharger Assembly Exploded View (Corrado)

THROTTLE VALVE HOUSING (TVH)
Removal & Installation
1) Disconnect accelerator cable from linkage. Disconnect
return spring on TVH. Remove cruise control connecting rod on TVH (if
equipped). Pull off vacuum hoses. Remove TVH mounting nuts.
2) Disconnect throttle valve switch. Remove 2 TVH-to-metallic
front vibration mounts nuts. Disconnect fuel return hose from pressure
regulator. Lift sensor housing upward and remove TVH. Remove gasket.
3) To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure all surfaces
are clean and mate correctly. Use new gaskets when assembling. Adjust
accelerator linkage and idle speed. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
