Always switch the ignition off, remove the key, and take it with you when leaving the vehicle ⇒ . As a reminder to do so, the combustion engine may start automatically under the following conditions:
x The ignition is switched ON.
x AND: Electrical drive is functional (Ready).
x AND: The transmission is in Park (P) or Neutral (N).
x AND: The driver safety belt is not fastened OR The driver door is open.
The message in the instrument cluster display also reminds you to switch the ignition off. In addition, always be sure to apply the parking brake, remove the key, and take it with you when leaving the vehicle.
WARNING
A parked vehicle that is not properly parked can roll away and cause accidents or severe injuries. When leaving the vehicle, always move the selector lever into Park (P) and engage the parking brake.

Special considerations for hybrid vehicles

NOTICE
x Failure to heed warning lights or text WARNINGS can result in vehicle damage.
x If the 12 Volt battery is disconnected or dead or has been replaced, there is a possibility that the combustion engine will not automatically switch off when the vehicle is powered by the electric motor. If this situation persists for several days, take the vehicle to an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility that is qualified to do work on hybrid vehicles.
x Never transport water or other liquids or fluids in open containers, such as an aquarium. If liquid is spilled in the luggage compartment, this can cause short circuits or damage the high-voltage battery.
NOTICE
Never block or cover the cooling air vents for the high-voltage hybrid battery under the rear seat. Blocking or covering these vents can damage the high-voltage battery.
NOTICE
If the vehicle is not used for a longer period, the high-voltage battery will run down. To keep the high-voltage battery in good condition, the vehicle needs to be driven at least every 2 months for at least 30 minutes or 15 miles (20 km).
x If the high-voltage battery is dead, the gasoline engine will not start. Contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer, an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility, or another qualified workshop for assistance.

Display
Different cruise control versions are available. The stored speed is shown in the instrument cluster display on some equipment versions.

Special considerations when using Park Distance Control
x In some cases, the Park Distance Control interprets water and ice on the sensors as an obstacle.
x If the distance remains the same, the warning tone volume decreases after a few seconds. If a continuous tone sounds, its volume remains the same.
x If the vehicle moves away from the obstacle, the beeping sound stops automatically. The beep turns on again automatically if the vehicle approaches the obstacle again.
x For vehicles with automatic transmissions, there is no beeping when the transmission is in Park (P).
x The volume of the audible signals can be adjusted by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.
Muting the Park Distance Control volume
You can mute the PDC beeping signals by tapping the  function key on the Radio or Navigation system screen (if applicable). Tap the function key again to reactivate the acoustic signals.
Switching Park Distance Control back on after it was switched off reactivates the volume. System malfunction warning signals cannot be switched off.
If you manually deactivate the display, PDC remains on and the sound is reactivated.
WARNING
Never rely completely on the PDC for information about people and objects that might be in the way of the vehicle and could be struck by the vehicle causing serious personal injury.
x The PDC sensors have blind spots where they cannot detect people or objects.
x Always watch for people, especially small children and animals, because the sensors may not always be able to detect them.
If you hear a long beep lasting about 3 seconds when you first turn PDC on or the indicator light in the button starts blinking, this means there is a malfunction in the Park Distance Control system. Switch off the Park Distance Control system with the button and have it immediately checked by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.

NOTICE
x The radar sensors in the rear bumper can be damaged or become misaligned in low-speed impacts and parking maneuvers. The system can switch itself off or may be impaired as a result.
x Always keep the rear bumper clean and free of snow and ice so that the radar sensors can function properly. Do not cover the radar sensor area.
x The rear bumper may only be painted with vehicle paint that is approved by Volkswagen. Other paints may impair the function of the Blind Spot Monitor or cause it to malfunction.
x Sunlight may reduce the visibility of the indicator light in the outside mirror.
If the system does not function as described in this chapter or if your vehicle was involved in a collision, do not use the Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert. See an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility to have the system checked.
Indicator lights

When the ignition is switched on, several warning and indicator lights come on briefly for a function check. They go out after a few seconds.
If the indicator light in the outside mirror does not light up, the Blind Spot Monitor does not currently
detect a vehicle in the monitored area around your vehicle ⇒ 
The brightness of the indicator lights in the outside mirrors are dimmed when the headlights are switched on (night mode).

Blind Spot Monitor

The Blind Spot Monitor uses sensors to monitor the blind spot detection area and the area behind your vehicle and informs you via indicator lights in the outside mirrors. The system measures the distance to other vehicles and the difference in speed between your vehicle and other vehicles. The Blind Spot Monitor only works at speeds above about 9 mph (15 km/h).
Indicator lights in the outside mirrors
The indicator light ⇒ fig. 137 in the glass for the respective outside mirror informs you about traffic to the rear, if the system interprets the situation as critical. The indicator light in the driver side outside mirror A informs you about traffic to the left, and the indicator light in the passenger side outside mirror B informs you about traffic to the right of your vehicle.
Tinting on the side windows or aftermarket tinting films can interfere with the indicator lights in the outside mirrors or cause false readings.
Keep the glass in the outside mirrors clean and free of snow and ice, and do not cover the mirrors with stickers or other objects.
Radar sensors
The radar sensors are behind the rear bumper on the left and right ⇒ fig. 138. They are not visible from outside the vehicle. They monitor an area about 21 yards (20 meters) behind the vehicle as well as the blind spots on the left and right sides of the vehicle. The monitored area next to the vehicle is about one lane wide.
The width of the lane is not detected individually on each road, but is preprogrammed into the system. Because of this, the indicators may be incorrect when driving on narrow roads or driving in the center of two lanes. Likewise, vehicles that are two lanes away from you or stationary objects such as guard rails may also be detected and cause a false warning.
Driving situations

x If your vehicle is being passed by another vehicle ⇒ fig. 139 A.
x When passing another vehicle ⇒ fig. 140 A, and the difference in speed between the two vehicles is no more than about 6 mph (10 km/h). There is no signal if the passing speed is clearly faster.
The faster another vehicle approaches, the earlier the signal in the outside mirror appears, because the Blind Spot Monitor accounts for the difference in speed between your vehicle and other vehicles. Therefore, the signals may trigger for different vehicles at different times, even when the distance to those vehicles is the same.
The Blind Spot Monitor only works at speeds above about 9 mph (15 km/h). The green indicator light 9 in the instrument cluster display switches on automatically when the system is active. The system and indicator light switch off automatically when the vehicle speed drops below about 6 mph (10 km/h).
Physical and system limitations
In certain situations, the Blind Spot Monitor may not interpret the traffic situation correctly. These situations may include:
x When driving in tight curves.
x When the width of the lanes differs.
x When there is a rise in the road surface.
x When there are poor weather conditions.
x When certain types of equipment are on the side of the road, such as high or offset guard rails.
Rear Traffic Alert

Stale air causes driver fatigue and reduces alertness, which can cause accidents, collisions, and serious personal injury.
x Never switch off the fan for a long time because no fresh air will enter the passenger com-partment.
