The traction grade assigned to this tire is based on braking (straight-\
ahead) traction tests and is not a
measure of cornering (turning) traction.
WARNING
The traction grade assigned to this tire is based on braking (straight-\
ahead) traction tests and is not a
measure of cornering (turning) traction.
TEMPERATURE
The temperature grades are AA (the highest), A, B, and C, representing\
the tire's resistance to the
generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under c\
ontrolled conditions on a specified
indoor laboratory test wheel.
Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degener\
ate and reduce tire life, and
excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure.
The grade C corresponds to a minimum level of performance that all passe\
nger vehicle tires must meet
under the Federal Motor Safety Standard No. 109. Grades B and A represen\
t higher levels of performance
on the laboratory test wheel than the minimum required by law.
WARNING
The temperature grade for this tire is established for a tire that is pr\
operly inflated and not overloaded.
Excessive speed, under-inflation, or excessive loading, either separatel\
y or in combination, can cause
heat buildup and tire failure.

Snow chains, snow tires, studded tires
Snow chains
Snow chains can be used on your Volvo with the following restrictions:
l Snow chains should be installed on front wheels only. Use only Volvo app\
roved snow chains.
l If accessory, aftermarket or "custom" tires and wheels are installed and\
are of a size different than the
original tires and wheels, chains in some cases CANNOT be used. Sufficie\
nt clearances between chains
and brakes, suspension and body components must be maintained.
l Some strap-on type chains will interfere with brake components and there\
fore CANNOT be used.
Consult your Volvo retailer for additional snow chain information.

Changing a wheel
Positioning the jack1
There are two jack attachment points on each side of the car.
6. Position the jack correctly in the attachment (see illustration abov\
e) and crank while simultaneously
guiding the base of the jack to the ground. The base of the jack must be\
flat on a level, firm, non-slippery
surface.
7. Before raising the car, check that the jack is still correctly positi\
oned in the attachment.
1Not included on models equipped with the tire sealing system.
WARNING
l The jack must correctly engage the jack attachment.
l Be sure the jack is on a firm, level, non-slippery surface.
l Never allow any part of your body to be extended under a car supported b\
y a jack.
l Use the jack intended for the car when changing a tire. For any other jo\
b, use stands to support the
car.
l Apply the parking brake and put the gear selector in the Park (P) position.
l Block the wheels standing on the ground, use rigid wooden blocks or larg\
e stones.
l The jack should be kept well-greased.

Temporarily repairing a flat tire
Before using the tire sealing system, observe the following:
WARNING
l Never leave the tire sealing system unattended when it is operating.
l Keep the tire sealing system kit away from children.
l The vehicle's engine should be running when the tire sealing system is u\
sed to avoid battery drain.
Therefore, be sure the vehicle is parked in a well ventilated place befo\
re using the system.
l Be sure the vehicle is parked safely off the road and away from moving t\
raffic.
l Apply the parking brake.
l Do not remove any foreign objects (nails, etc.) from the tire.
172 07 Wheels and tires
Tire sealing system
Temporarily repairing a flat tire is done in two stages
l In the first stage, the hole is sealed by pumping sealing compound into \
the tire. The car is then driven a
short distance to distribute the sealing compound in the tire.
l In the second stage, the tire's inflation pressure is checked and adjust\
ed if necessary.
Stage 1 - Sealing the hole
Peel off the speed limit sticker (1) and affix it to the steering whee\
l hub where it will be clearly visible to
the driver.

179 08 Car care
Washing and cleaning the vehicle
washers do not have facilities for washing the underbody.
CAUTION
l Before driving into an automatic car wash, turn off the optional rain se\
nsor to avoid damaging the
windshield wipers.
l Make sure that side view mirrors, auxiliary lamps, etc, are secure, and \
that any antenna(s) are
retracted or removed. Otherwise there is risk of the machine dislodging \
them.
WARNING
l When the car is driven immediately after being washed, apply the brakes \
several times in order to
remove any moisture from the brake linings.
l Engine cleaning agents should not be used when the engine is warm. This \
constitutes a fire risk.
Exterior lighting
Condensation may form temporarily on the inside of the lenses of exterio\
r lights such as headlights, fog
lights, or taillights. This is normal and the lights are designed to wit\
hstand moisture. Normally,
condensation will dissipate after the lights have been on for a short ti\
me.
Polishing and Waxing
l Normally, polishing is not required during the first year after delivery\
, however, waxing may be
beneficial.
l Before applying polish or wax the vehicle must be washed and dried. Tar \
spots can be removed with
kerosene or tar remover. Difficult spots may require a fine rubbing comp\
ound.
l After polishing use liquid or paste wax.
l Several commercially available products contain both polish and wax.
l Waxing alone does not substitute for polishing a dull surface.
l A wide range of polymer-based waxes can be purchased today. These waxes \
are easy to use and
produce a long-lasting, high-gloss finish that protects the bodywork aga\
inst oxidation, road dirt and
fading.
l Do not polish or wax your vehicle in direct sunlight (the surface of th\
e vehicle should not be warmer
than 113° F (45° C).
CAUTION

retailer.
NOTE
Do not top off with water only. This reduces the rust-protective and ant\
ifreeze qualities of the coolant
and has a lower boiling point. It can also cause damage to the cooling s\
ystem if it should freeze. Top off
with Volvo Genuine Coolant/Antifreeze only (a 50/50 mix of water and an\
tifreeze).
CAUTION
The cooling system must always be kept filled to the correct level, and \
the level must be between the
MIN and MAX marks. If it is not kept filled, there can be high local tem\
peratures in the engine which
could result in damage. Different types of antifreeze/coolant may not be\
mixed. Check coolant
regularly!
WARNING
Never remove the radiator cap while the engine is warm. Wait until the v\
ehicle cools. If it is necessary
to top off the coolant when the engine is warm, unscrew the expansion ta\
nk cap slowly so that the
overpressure dissipates.

The brake fluid should always be between the MIN and MAX marks on the si\
de of the reservoir. Check,
without removing the cap, that there is sufficient fluid in the reservoi\
r.
Fluid type: DOT 4+ boiling point > 536°F (280°C), P/N 9437433
Replace: The fluid should be replaced according to the intervals specified in t\
he Warranty and Service
Records Information booklet. When driving under extremely hard condition\
s (mountain driving, etc), it
may be necessary to replace the fluid more often. Consult your Volvo ret\
ailer. Always entrust brake fluid
changing to an authorized Volvo retailer.
Power steering fluid
The fluid level is checked at each service interval.
Fluid type: Volvo power steering fluid or equivalent.
Replace: No fluid change required.
WARNING
If a problem should occur in the power steering system or if the vehicle\
has no electrical current and
must be towed, it is still possible to steer the vehicle. However, keep \
in mind that greater effort will be
required to turn the steering wheel.
