When the remote key is placed in the backup reader, make sure that no othervehicle keys, metal objects or electronicdevices (e.g. cellular phones, tablets, lap-tops or chargers) are in the backup reader.Multiple vehicle keys close to each other inthe backup reader can disrupt their func-tionality.

Always put the gear selector in
P and

Always open the garage door fully andmake sure that ventilation is very goodbefore starting the engine in a garage.The exhaust fumes produced by thevehicle contain carbon monoxide,which is invisible and odorless but verytoxic.
CAUTION
When starting in cold weather, the automatic transmission may shift up atslightly higher engine speeds than nor-mal until the automatic transmissionfluid reaches normal operating tem-perature.
Do not race a cold engine immediatelyafter starting. This could prevent fluidsfrom properly lubricating vital compo-nents in the engine before it hasreached the proper operating tempera-ture.
The engine should be idling when thegear selector is moved. Never acceler-ate until the gear is fully engaged.Accelerating rapidly before a gear isproperly engaged could lead to harderwear of components.
To help prevent the transmission oilfrom overheating, select
P or N when
idling at a standstill for prolonged peri-ods of time.

Ignition modes The vehicle's ignition can be put in various modes (levels) to make different functionsavailable.
To enable the use of a limited number of func- tions when the engine is not running, the igni-tion can be put in one of three different levels:0, I and II. These levels are referred to as "igni-
tion modes" in the Owner's Manual. The following table shows which functions are available in each ignition mode:

Brakes
The brake pedal is used to apply the vehicle's regular brakes, which are part of the brakesystem.
The vehicle is equipped with two brake cir- cuits. If one brake circuit is damaged, thebrake pedal will go down further whendepressed. More pressure will then berequired from the driver for normal brakingeffect. The driver's pressure on the brake pedal is enhanced by a power braking function.
WARNING
Power braking only functions if the engine is running.
If the brake pedal is used when the engine is turned off, the pedal will feel stiffer than usualand greater pressure must be applied to brakethe vehicle. In very hilly areas or when driving with a heavy load, manual gear shifting can be used to aug-ment the brakes with engine braking. Enginebraking is most effective if the same gear isused both uphill and downhill.
Anti-lock brakesThe vehicle is equipped with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS 2
), which helps prevent
the wheels from locking and helps maintain steering control when braking. Vibrations maybe felt from the brake pedal when ABS isoperating, which is normal. After the vehicle is started, a brief test of the ABS system is automatically performed whenthe driver releases the brake pedal. An addi-tional automatic test of the system may beperformed when the vehicle is traveling at alow speed. During the test, the brake pedalmay feel as though it is pulsating.Symbols in the instrument panel

If the warning symbols for both brake fault and ABS fault are lit simultaneously, theremay be a fault in the brake system.
If the brake fluid reservoir level is nor- mal when this occurs, drive carefully tothe nearest workshop to have thebrake system checked - an authorizedVolvo workshop is recommended.
If the brake fluid has fallen below theMIN
level in the brake fluid reservoir,
the vehicle should not be driven untilthe brake fluid has been filled. The rea-son for the brake fluid loss must bechecked.

Brake Assist System The brake enhancing system, (BAS 3
), helps
increase braking force and can thereby reduce braking distance.
The system monitors the driver's braking hab- its and increases braking force when neces-sary. Braking force can be increased up to thepoint at which the ABS intervenes. The func-tion is deactivated when pressure on the brakepedal is decreased.
NOTE
When BAS is activated, the brake pedal will go down slightly more than usual.Press (hold) down the brake pedal as longas necessary. When the brake pedal is released, all brak- ing ceases.

Braking on wet roads
Prolonged driving in heavy rain without brak- ing may cause braking effect to be slightlydelayed the first time the brakes are applied.
This may also occur after washing the vehicle. It will then be necessary to apply greater pres-sure to the brake pedal. You should thereforemaintain a greater distance to the vehicleahead. Firmly apply the brakes after washing the vehicle or driving on wet roads. This helpswarm up the brake discs, enabling them to drymore quickly and protecting them against cor-rosion. Consider the current traffic situationwhen braking.

Parking on a hillAlways use the parking brake when parking on a hill.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when park- ing on an incline. Selecting a gear or put-ting the automatic transmission in P may
not be sufficient to keep the vehicle sta-tionary in all situations.
If the vehicle is pointing uphill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointing away from
the curb.
If the vehicle is pointing downhill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointingtoward
the curb.
Heavy load uphill
Heavy loads, such as a trailer, could cause the vehicle to roll backward when the parkingbrake is released automatically on steep uphillgradients. To help avoid this, pull the controlupward while you are driving away. Releasethe control when the vehicle gains traction.

Parking brake malfunction
If you are unable to deactivate or activate the parking brake after several attempts, contactan authorized Volvo workshop.
A audible warning signal will sound if the park- ing brake is activated while the vehicle isbeing driven. If the vehicle must be parked before the prob- lem is rectified, turn the wheels as when park-ing on an incline and put the gear selector inP .
Low battery charge levelIf the battery charge level is too low, it will notbe possible to activate or deactivate the park-ing brake. Connect an auxiliary battery to thevehicle if the battery is discharged.
Replacing brake padsDue to the design of the electric parkingbrake, the rear brake pads must be replacedby a workshop. An authorized Volvo workshopis recommended.

Braking assist after a collision
In a collision in which the activation level is reached for the pyrotechnic seat belt tension-ers or airbags, or if a collision with a large ani-mal is detected, the vehicle's brakes will beautomatically activated. This function isintended to help prevent or reduce the effectsof any subsequent collision.
After a serious collision, it may no longer be possible to control and steer the vehicle. Inorder to avoid or mitigate a possible furthercollision with a vehicle or an object in the vehi-cle's path, the brake assist system is activatedautomatically to help stop the vehicle safely. If braking is not appropriate, e.g. if there is a risk of being hit by passing traffic, the drivercan override the system by depressing theaccelerator pedal. This function assumes that the brake system is intact after a collision.

Transmission
The transmission is part of the vehicle's drive- line (power transmission) between the engineand the drive wheels. The function of thetransmission is to change gears dependingon speed and power needs.
The vehicle has an 8-speed automatic trans- mission. The number of gears allows theengine's torque and power band to be effec-tively utilized. Two of the gears are overdrivegears that save fuel when driving at a constantengine speed. Manual shifting is also possible.The instrument panel shows the gear currentlyin use.

Automatic transmission
In vehicles with an automatic transmission, the system selects the gear so that drivingwill be as energy-efficient as possible. Thetransmission also has a manual mode.
The transmission is available in different ver- sions. The gear selector indicates which trans-mission the vehicle has. The various gearselectors have different functions.

The instrument panel shows which gear is cur- rently in use: P , R , N , D or M. For vehicles with the small
gear selector, P position is electric and the
gear shift pattern is instead R, N , D or M.
For manual shifting, the gear indicator in the instrument panel displays the gear currentlybeing used.
CAUTION
Check the operating temperature of the transmission to help avoid damage to anyof the drive system components. If there isa risk of overheating, a warning symbol willappear in the instrument panel and a textmessage will be displayed. Follow the rec-ommendations given.

With an automatic transmission, a suitable gear is selected automatically according tocurrent speed and power requirements.
Selecting gearsThe gear selector is a shift-by-wire selector, where shifting is done electronically instead ofmechanically. This makes shifting easier andthe gear positions more distinct.

For the large gear selector, change gear selec- tor position by pressing the gear selector for-ward or rearward, or to the left for manualshifting.

Park - P
For the small gear selector, Park is activated using the P button next to the gear selector.
For the large gear selector, Park is activatedby moving the gear selector to position P.
In P mode, the transmission is mechanically
locked. Select P when the vehicle is parked or when
starting the engine. The vehicle must be sta- tionary when Park is selected. To move to another gear from Park, the brakepedal must be depressed and the ignition inmode
II. For vehicles with the small gear
selector, the engine must be running. When parking – apply the parking brake before shifting to Park.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when park- ing on an incline. Selecting a gear or put-ting the automatic transmission in P may
not be sufficient to keep the vehicle sta-tionary in all situations.
NOTE
The gear selector must be in position P in
order to lock the vehicle and set the alarm.

The engine auto-starts while the brake pedal is depressed
In the following situations, the engine will auto-start even if the brake pedal isdepressed: High levels of condensation on the insideof the windows.
The climate system settings and theactual climate in the passenger compart-ment differ.
The brake pedal is pumped repeatedly.
The hood is open.
The vehicle begins to roll or increasesspeed slightly if the engine auto-stoppedbefore the vehicle was at a standstill.
The driver's seat belt is unbuckled with thegear selector in the
D or N positions.
The gear selector is moved from
D to R or
M (± ).
The driver's door is opened with the gearselector in
D. An audible signal and a text
message informs the driver that the igni-tion is on.
WARNING
Do not open the hood if the engine has auto-stopped. Turn off the engine byswitching off the ignition before lifting thehood.

WARNING
Never turn off the engine while the vehicle is moving, e.g. when driving downhill. Thisdeactivates certain important systemssuch as power steering and brakes.
Other factors that decrease fuel consumption
Dirty air cleaner.
Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter.
Incorrect front-end alignment.
Incorrect wheel alignment.

Preparing for a long trip
It is important to have the vehicle's systems and equipment checked carefully before driv-ing long distances.
Check that
the engine is running properly and that fuel consumption is normal
there are no leaks (fuel, oil or other fluid)
the brake pedal is functioning properly
all lights are working
‒ adjust the head-
light height if the vehicle is carrying aheavy load
tire tread depth and air pressure are atcorrect levels. Change to snow tires whendriving in areas where there is a risk ofsnowy or icy roads
the start battery is sufficiently charged
the wiper blades are in good condition

Winter driving
It is important to check the vehicle before driving in cold/snowy conditions to makesure it can be driven safely.
Before the cold season arrives: Make sure the engine coolant contains 50% antifreeze. This mixture helps pro-tect the engine from frost erosion down toapprox. –35 °C (–31 °F). Do not mix dif-ferent types of antifreeze as this couldpose a health risk.
Keep the fuel tank well filled to preventcondensation from forming.
Check the viscosity of the engine oil. Oilwith low viscosity (thinner oil) improvescold-weather starting and reduces fuelconsumption when driving with a coldengine.
CAUTION
Low-viscosity oil should not be used with hard driving or in hot weather.
Check the condition and charge level of the start battery. Cold weather placesgreater demands on the start battery andreduces its capacity.
Use washer fluid containing antifreeze tohelp prevent ice from forming in thewasher fluid reservoir.
