Parking brake
The parking brake helps keep the vehicle sta- tionary by mechanically locking two wheels.
The parking brake controls are located in the tunnel console between the seats.
When the electric parking brake is being applied, a faint sound can be heard from thebrake's electric motor. This sound can also beheard during the automatic function check ofthe parking brake. If the vehicle is stationary when the parking brake is activated, it will only be applied to therear wheels. If it is activated while the vehicleis moving, the normal brakes will be used onall four wheels. Braking will be transferred toonly the rear wheels when the vehicle isalmost stopped.

Transmission
The transmission is part of the vehicle's drive- line (power transmission) between the engineand the drive wheels. The function of thetransmission is to change gears dependingon speed and power needs.
The vehicle has an 8-speed automatic trans- mission. The number of gears allows theengine's torque and power band to be effec-tively utilized. Two of the gears are overdrive gears that save fuel when driving at a constant engine speed.Both the gear selector and the steering wheelpaddles can be used to shift up or down man-ually. The selected gear selector position willbe displayed in the instrument panel.

Gear position is selected automatically to make driving as energy efficient as possible.The transmission also has a manual mode.
The transmission is available in two different versions. The gear selector indicates whichtransmission the vehicle has. The various gearselectors have different functions.

Shifting gears with automatic transmission
For the small gear selector, change gear posi- tion by pushing the spring-loaded gear selec-tor forward or rearward, or to the side formanual shifting. For the large gear selector,you instead move the gear selector to the leftfor manual shifting.

Parking – P
Overview of gear selector and gear position P for the small gear selector.
For the small gear selector, Park is activated using the P button next to the gear selector.
For the large gear selector, Park is activatedby moving the gear selector to position P.
In the P position, the transmission is mechani-
cally locked. Select P position when the vehicle is parked.
The vehicle can be started when it is in P posi-
tion. The vehicle must be stationary when P is
selected. When parking – apply the parking brake before shifting to position P.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when park- ing on an incline. Selecting a gear or put-ting the automatic transmission in P may
not be sufficient to keep the vehicle sta-tionary in all situations.
NOTE
The gear selector must be in position P in
order to lock the vehicle and set the alarm.

+ " (plus) and release to shift up one gear.

For smooth shifting and engine performance,the transmission will shift down automaticallyif the vehicle's speed becomes too low for theselected gear.

The steering wheel paddles are a supplement to the gear selector and make it possible toshift manually without removing your handsfrom the steering wheel. The function is available in position D or M.
"-": Shift down one gear.
" + ": Shift up one gear.
ChangeTo shift:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steer- ing wheel and then release.
As long as the engine speed (rpm) is withinthe permissible range for the selected gear, agear shift will take place each time a paddle is pulled. The current gear will be displayed inthe instrument panel. In the
M position, the paddles are automati-
cally activated.

Shiftlock The automatic transmission's shiftlock func- tion helps prevent inadvertently moving thegear selector between different positions.
There are two types of shiftlocks: mechanical and automatic.
Mechanical shiftlock
Shiftlock for vehicles with large gear selectors.
The gear selector can be moved back and forth between N and D. The other positions
have a shiftlock that is operated using the lockbutton on the gear selector. Press and hold the shiftlock button and move the gear selector forward or backwardbetween P, R , N and D.
Automatic shiftlockThe automatic shiftlock has a separate safetysystem.
From Park – P or Neutral – N
To move the gear selector from P or N to
another gear selector position, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition in mode II.
For vehicles with the small gear selector, theengine must be running. If the gear selector is in N and the vehicle has
been stationary for at least 3 seconds (with or without the engine running), the gear selectorwill be locked in that position.
Messages in the instrument panelIf the gear selector is locked in position a mes-sage will appear in the instrument panel e.g.

If the vehicle does not have electrical current, the automatic shiftlock may be disengagedon vehicles equipped with the large gearselector. The shiftlock cannot be disengagedon vehicles equipped with the small gearselector.

can be moved.

Lift the rubber mat in the storage com- partment in front of the gear selector.Locate the hole with a spring-loaded but-ton in the bottom of the compartment.
Press a small screwdriver or similar object into the hole and hold it down.
Move the gear selector to N and release
the button.
4. Replace the rubber mat.

The kickdown function Kickdown can be used when maximum acceleration is needed e.g. when passing.
When the accelerator pedal is depressed all the way to the floor (past the normal full accel-erator position), the transmission will auto-matically engage kickdown, i.e. immediatelyshift down to a lower gear. If the accelerator pedal is released from the kickdown position, the transmission will auto-matically shift up again.
Safety function
The transmission control module is equipped with a downshift protection feature to helpprevent the engine from overheating. In some conditions, the transmission will pre- vent downshifting/kickdown if this would leadto such high engine speed (rpm) that theengine could be damaged. If the driver stillattempts downshifting or kickdown at a highrpm, nothing will happen and the original gearwill remain selected. With kickdown, the vehicle can downshift one or more steps at a time depending on theengine speed. The vehicle upshifts when theengine reaches its maximum rpm to preventengine damage.

The Launch function
*
Launch can be used to provide maximum acceleration from a standstill. The function is available for the drive modes:
Dynamic,Comfort and Individual.
Activating LaunchMake sure that the vehicle is stationary and that the wheels are pointing straight ahead.
1. Put the gear selector in D position.
2. Depress the brake pedal fully.
3. Then fully depress the accelerator pedal.
4. Release the brake pedal within 2 seconds.
NOTE
If the Launch function does not work, wait a few minutes to let the driveline reachworking temperature before trying again.
CAUTION
The driveline is exposed to wear when using Launch and the function is thereforeonly available a limited number of times.

Comfort
Comfort is the vehicle's default mode. The
settings offer driving comfort, light steering and soft suspension adapted for normal driv-ing. In
Comfort mode, no tachometer will be dis-
played in the instrument panel 10
.
Eco
Adapt the vehicle for more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly driving with Eco mode.
In this mode, the Start/Stop function is acti- vated, suspension is soft and certain climatesettings are reduced. When driving in
Eco mode, an ECO gauge
indicating how economical the driving is will be displayed in the instrument panel.
Dynamic
Dynamic mode is designed to help pro-
vide sportier driving characteristics and a faster acceleration response.
Gear shifting will be faster and more distinctand the transmission will prioritize gears witha higher traction force. Steering response is faster and suspension is stiffer 11
to help reduce body roll when corner-
ing. The Start/Stop function is deactivated.
Dynamic mode is also available in a Polestar
Engineered* version.
Individual
Customizes drive mode to personal prefer- ences.
Select one of the drive modes as a basis andadjust the settings to achieve your preferreddriving characteristics. These settings will bestored in the active driver profile and will beavailable every time the vehicle is unlockedwith that remote key. Individual drive mode is only available if it has been activated in the center display.

Driving through standing water
It may be necessary to drive the vehicle through standing water e.g. deep puddles orflooding on the road. This must be done withgreat caution.
The vehicle can be driven through water up to a depth of 25 cm (9 in) at no more than walk-ing speed. Be particularly careful when drivingthrough flowing water. When driving through standing water, drive slowly and do not stop the vehicle. When youhave passed the water, press lightly on thebrake pedal and check that the brakes arefunctioning properly. Water, mud, slush, etc.can make the brake linings slippery, resultingin delayed braking effect. If the vehicle is equipped with contacts for an electric heater or trailer coupling, cleanthese after driving in water or mud.
Do not allow the vehicle to stand in waterup to the sills any longer than absolutelynecessary. This could result in electricalmalfunctions.
CAUTION
Engine damage could occur if water enters the air cleaner.
If water enters the transmission, thelubricating ability of the oils is reducedand the service life of these systems isshortened.
Damage to any component, engine,transmission, turbocharger, differentialor its internal components caused byflooding, vapor lock or insufficient oil isnot covered under warranty.
If the engine stalls while the vehicle isin water, do not attempt to restart it.Have the vehicle towed out of thewater to a workshop. An authorizedVolvo workshop is recommended. Riskof engine failure.
CAUTION
Because it can be difficult to determine the water depth, Volvo recommends not driv-ing through standing or running water. Thedriver is always responsible for operatingthe vehicle in a safe manner and adheringto all applicable laws and regulations.

Opening/closing the fuel filler door
The vehicle must be unlocked before the fuel filler door can be opened 15
.
An arrow next to the fuel pump symbol in the instru-ment panel indicates the sideof the vehicle on which thefuel filler door is located.
1. Open the fuel filler door by pressing lightly
on its rear edge.
2. After refueling, press the fuel filler door lightly to close it.

Refueling
The fuel tank is equipped with a fuel filling system without a cover.
Refueling the vehicle at a service station
It is important to insert the pump's nozzle past both of the two flaps in the fuel filler pipe before beginningfueling.
Instructions for fueling:
1. Turn off the engine and open the fuel filler door.
2. Select a fuel approved for use in the vehi- cle. For more information on approved fuels, see the section on “Fuel”. 3. Insert the pump's nozzle into the fuel filler
pipe's opening. There are two flaps justinside the fuel filler pipe and the pump'snozzle must push both of these flaps openbefore fuel can be added.
4. Avoid overfilling the tank. Do not press the handle on the filler nozzle again after it hasinitially stopped pumping.
> The fuel tank is now filled.
NOTE
An over-full tank may overflow in hot weather.
CAUTION
Avoid spilling gasoline during refueling. In addition to causing damage to the environ-ment, gasolines containing alcohol cancause damage to painted surfaces, whichmay not be covered under the New VehicleLimited Warranty.
Refueling from a fuel containerWhen filling from a fuel container, use the fun- nel provided in a foam block under the floorhatch in the cargo compartment.
1. Open the fuel filler door. 2. Insert the funnel into the fuel filler pipe's
opening. There are two flaps just inside the fuel filler pipe and the tube section ofthe funnel must push both of these flapsopen before fuel can be added.

NOTE
Extreme weather conditions, towing a trailer, high altitude and lower fuel gradethan recommended are factors that cansignificantly increase the vehicle's fuel con-sumption.
Trailer weights
WARNING
Please adhere to the recommendations provided for trailer weight. If the recom-mendations are not followed, the vehicleand trailer may be difficult to control duringevasive maneuvers and braking.
NOTE
The specified maximum trailer weights are those permitted by Volvo. National vehicleregulations may set additional restrictionson trailer weight and speed. The trailerhitches may be certified for higher towingweights than the vehicle is permitted totow.
Self-leveling suspension *The vehicle's self-leveling system attempts to keep the vehicle at a constant level, regardlessof load (up to the maximum permitted weight).When the vehicle is stationary, the rear end of the vehicle will be slightly lowered, which isnormal.
Driving in hilly terrain or hot weatherIn certain conditions, there is a risk of over-heating when driving with a trailer. If overheat-ing of the engine and drive system is detected,a warning symbol will illuminate in the instru-ment panel and a message will appear. The automatic transmission adapts the gear for the current load and engine speed.
Steep inclines
Do not lock the automatic transmission into a higher gear than what the engine can handle
‒
it is not always preferable to drive in highgears at low rpm.
Parking on a hill
1. Depress the brake pedal.
2. Apply the parking brake.
3. Put the gear selector in P.
4. Release the brake pedal.Put chocks behind the wheels when the vehi- cle is parked on a hill with a trailer attached.
Starting on a hill
1. Depress the brake pedal.
2. Put the gear selector in D.
3. Release the parking brake.
4. Release the brake pedal and start driving.
