CargocompartmentGeneralPayloaddependsonthecar’stotalkerb
weight,includinganyaccessoriesthatare
mounted.Kerbweightincludesthedriver,the
weightofthefueltankwhenfilledto90%
andvariousfluids,suchaswasherfluidand
coolant.Mountedaccessories,i.e.towbar,
loadcarriers,spacebox,etc.,areincludedin
thekerbweight.
Thepayloadofthecarisreducedbythe
numberofpassengersandtheirweight.LoadingthecargocompartmentTheseatbeltsandairbagsprovidethedriver
andpassengerssubstantialprotection,
especiallyinhead-oncollisions.However,
youmustalsoremembertoprotectyourself
againstinjuriesfrombehind.Whenloadingcargo,bearinmindthatimproperlysecured
orincorrectlyloadedobjectsinthecargo
compartmentcouldbethrownforwardwith
greatspeedandforceintheeventofa
collisionorsuddenbraking,causingserious
injuries.
Bearinmindthatifanobjectweighing20kg
issubjectedtoahead-oncollisionataspeed
of50km/h,itsimpactweightwillbe
1000kg.
Thinkaboutthefollowingwhenloading:
Donotloadextremelyheavyobjectsup
bythefrontseats.Theloweredbackrest
willbepresseddownunnecessarilyhard.
Placetheloadbythebackrest.
Positionheavyloadsaslowaspossible.

Coversharpedgeswithsomethingsoft.
Securetheloadwithretainingstraps
usingthecar’slashingeyes.

drivingonmainroads,butalsohasgood

roads.Keepthefollowinginmindinorderto
preservetheservicelifeofyourcar:
Driveslowlyonroughroadssoyoudonot
damagethecar’sunderbody.
Ifthegroundislooseorismadeupofdry
sandorsnow,itisalwaysbesttokeep
thecarmovingatalltimesandavoid
shifting.Donotstopthecar.
Iftheroadisextremelysteepandthereis
ariskofoverturning,nevertrytoturnthe
cararound.Reversebackdown.Donot
drivediagonallyacrossanincline.Drivein
thedirectionoftheincline.
NOTE!Avoiddrivingonsteepslopesifthe
fuellevelislow.Thecatalyticconvertercould
bedamagediftheenginedoesnotreceive
enoughfuel.Whendrivingonextremely
steepslopes,makesurethetankismorethan
halffulltoavoidtheriskofbreakdown.WadingThecarcanbedriventhroughwaterwitha
depthofnomorethan48cm.NOTE!Ingreaterdepths,watercanenterthe
differentialsandthetransmission.This
reducesthelubricatingabilityoftheoiland
shortenstheservicelifeofthesystems.
Whendrivingthroughshallowwater,
maintainalowspeedanddonotstopthecar.
Onceyouhavepassedthroughthewater,
applyalightpressuretothebrakepedaland
checkbrakefunction.Water,mudandthe
likecandampenbrakelinings,resultingin
delayedbrakingaction.
Cleantheelectriccontactsoftheelectric
engineheaterandtrailercouplingafter
drivinginwaterandmud.
NOTE!Donotletthecarstandwithwater
overthesillsforanylongperiodoftime.This

higherthannormalforcertainenginetypes
duringcoldstarting.Thisissothatthe
emissionssystemcanreachnormal
operatingtemperatureasquicklyaspossible,
whichminimisesexhaustemissionsand

thekeytothestartpositionwhenthe
indicatorsymbolgoesout.
Dieselparticlefilter
(certainmodels)Certaindieselcarsareequippedwitha
particlefilterwhichresultsinadditionally
effectiveemissioncontrol.Whentheengine
reachesitsnormaloperatingtemperature
(theengineiswarm)aso-called"regener-
ation"ofthefiltertakesplaceautomatically,
whichmeansthattheparticlescollectedin
thefilterareburnedawayandthefilteris
emptied.
Regenerationtakesbetween10and
15minutes.Duringthistimefuel
consumptionmayincreaseslightly.Winterdriving
Ifthecarisfrequentlydrivenshortdistances
incoldweatherthentheenginedoesnot
reachnormaloperatingtemperature.This
meansthatregenerationofthedieselparticle
filterdoesnottakeplaceandthefilterisnot
emptied.
Whenthefilterhasbecomeapprox.80%full
ofparticlesthenayellowwarningtrianglein
thedashboarddisplayisshownalongwith
thewarningtextSOOTFILTERFULLSEE
MANUAL.
Regenerationshouldbecarriedoutregularly
ifthecarisfrequentlydrivenshortdistances
incoldweatherinordertoavoidimpaired
functionofthefilter.
Startregenerationofthefilterbydriving
thecaruntiltheenginereachesnormal
operatingtemperature,preferablyona
mainroadormotorway.Thecarshould
thenbedrivenforapproximately
20minutesmore.
Toclearthewarningtextwhenregener-
ationiscomplete,switchofftheignition,
removethekey,waitforatleastthree
minutesandswitchtheignitiononagain.
Usetheparkingheater(option)incold
weathersothattheenginereaches
normaloperatingtemperaturemore
quickly.

tothegearboxoil’sviscosityatlowtempera-
tures.Tominimiseengineemissions,the
gearboxshiftsuplaterthannormalwhenthe
engineisstartedatlowtemperatures.
Turboengine
Whentheengineiscold,thetransmission
shiftsgearsathigherrevs.Thisallowsthe
catalyticconvertertoreachnormaloperating
temperaturemorequickly,withlessexhaust
emissions.AdaptivesystemThegearboxiscontrolledbywhatisknown
asanadaptivesystem.Thesystemcontin-
uallymonitorshowthegearboxisbehaving
andsenseseverygearchangeforoptimum
changequality.
Lock-upfunction
Thegearshavealock-upfunction(locked
gears),whichgivesbetterenginebrakingand
lowerfuelconsumption.SafetysystemsCarswithanautomaticgearboxhavespecial
safetysystems:Keylock
Toremovetheignitionkey,thegearselector
mustbeinthePposition.Thekeyislockedin
allotherpositions.
Parkingposition(Pposition)
Stationarycarwithenginerunning:
–Holdyourfootonthebrakepedalwhen
movingthegearselectortoanother
position.
Electricgearinhibitor–Shiftlock
Parkingposition(Pposition)
Tobeabletomovethegearselectorfromthe
Ppositiontoothergearpositions,theignition
keymustbeinpositionIorIIandthebrake
pedalmustbedepressed.
Kick-downWhentheacceleratorispressedalltheway
tothefloor,beyondthepositionnormally
regardedasfullacceleration,alowergearis
immediatelyengaged.Thisisknownaskick-
down.
Whenmaximumspeedforthisgearis
reached,oriftheacceleratorisreleasedfrom
thekick-downposition,thegearboxautomat-
icallychangesup.
Kick-downisusedwhenmaximumacceler-
ationisneeded,suchasforovertaking.
Topreventoverrevving,thegearboxcontrol
programhasaprotectivedownshiftinhibitor.Thekick-downfunctioncannotbeusedin
themanualpositions.Returnto

theengineisrunning.Ifthebrakepedalis
pressedwhentheengineisstarted,youwill
feelthepedaldrop.Thisisnormalanddueto
thebrakeservobecomingactive.Thismaybe
morenoticeableifthecarhasemergency
brakeassistance(EBA).
NOTE!Ifbrakingwiththeengineswitched
off,pressthebrakepedalsharplyonce,not
repeatedly.Brakecircuits
Thissymbollightsifabrakecircuitis
notworking.
Ifafaultshouldoccurinoneofthe
circuits,itisstillpossibletobrakethecar.The
brakepedalwilltravelfurtherandmayfeel
softerthannormal.Harderpressureonthe
pedalisneededtoproducethenormal
brakingeffect.Dampnesscanaffectbraking
characteristics
Brakecomponentsbecomewetwhenthecar
isdriveninheavyrain,throughpoolsofwater
orwhenthecariswashed.Thismayalter
brakepadfrictioncharacteristicssothat
thereisadelaybeforebrakingeffectis
noticed.
Pressthebrakepedallightlyfromtimetotime
ifdrivingforlongstretchesinrainorslushy
snow,aswellasaftersettingoffinverydamp
orcoldweather.Thiswarmsupthebraking
surfacesanddriesoffanywater.Itisalso
recommendedtodothisbeforeparkingthe
carforalongperiodinsuchweathercondi-
tions.
IfthebrakesareusedheavilyWhendrivingintheAlpsorotherroadswith
similarcharacteristics,thecar’sbrakesare
heavilyloadedevenifthebrakepedalisnot
beingdepressedespeciallyhard.
Becausespeedisoftenlow,thebrakesare
notcooledaseffectivelyaswhendrivingon
flatroadsathigherspeed.
Soasnottooverloadthebrakes,shiftdown
whendrivingdownhillinsteadofusingthe
footbrake.Usethesamegeardriving
downhillasyouwouldusedrivinguphill.Thisusingenginebrakingmoreefficientlyand
requiresthefootbrakeforonlybriefperiods.
Bearinmindthatdrivingwithatrailerputsan
additionalloadonthecar’sbrakes.
Anti-lockbrakingsystem(ABS)
Theanti-lockbrakingsystem(ABS)
preventsthewheelsfromlockingup
underbraking.
Thismeanstheabilitytosteeris
maintainedanditiseasiertoswervetoavoid
ahazard,forexample.
Aftertheenginehasbeenstarted,theABS
willperformabriefself-testataspeedof
about20km/h.Thiscanbefeltandheardas
pulsesinthebrakepedal.
TogetthemostoutoftheABS:
Pressbrakepedalwithfullforce.Pulses
willbefelt.
Steerthecarinthedirectionoftravel.Do
notreleasethepressureonthepedal.
PracticebrakingwiththeABSsystemina
traffic-freeareaandindifferentweather
conditions.
TheABSsymbollightsup:forabout
twosecondswhenthecarisstartedifthe
ABSisdisengagedduetoafault.

system–EBD
TheElectronicBrakeforceDistribution
system(EBD)isanintegratedpartofthe
ABSsystem.TheEBDsystemcontrolsthe
brakeforcetotherearwheelssothatthe
bestpossiblebrakingforceisalways
available.Pulseswillbeheardandfelt
throughthebrakepedalwhenthesystem
regulatesbrakeforce.Emergencybrakeassistance–EBA
(Emergencybrakeassistance)Incaseof
suddenbraking,full-strengthbrakingis
providedinstantaneously.TheEBAfunction
senseswhenheavybrakingisunderwayby
registeringhowquicklythebrakepedalis
depressed.Continuebrakingwithouteasing
offonthebrakepedal.Thefunctionis
suspendedwhenthepressureonthebrake
pedaleases.Thisfunctionisalwaysactive
andcannotbedisengaged.
WARNING!
IftheBRAKEandABSwarningsymbols
arelitatthesametime,afaultmayhave
occurredinthebrakesystem.Ifthelevelin
thebrakefluidreservoirisnormal,drive
carefullytothenearestauthorisedVolvo
workshoptohavethebrakesystem
checked.
IfthebrakefluidisundertheMINlevelin
thebrakefluidreservoir,donotdrive
furtherbeforetoppingupthebrakefluid.
Thereasonforthelossofbrakefluidmust
beinvestigated.

andTractionControl)-Stabilityandtraction
controlsystemorDSTC(DynamicStability
andTractionControl)-Dynamicstabilityand
tractioncontrolsystem.
TractionControl–(TC)
TheTractionControlfunctiontransfers
powerfromthespinningdrivewheeltothe
drivewheelwhichhasgripbybrakingthe
spinningdrivewheel.Toincreaseforward
tractioninthissituation,itmaybenecessary
todepresstheacceleratormorethanusual.A
pulsingsoundisheardwhenTractionControl
isworking.Thisiscompletelynormal.TheTC
functionismostactiveatlowspeeds.It
cannotbedeactivated.SpinControl(SC)
TheStabilityControlfunctionpreventsthe
drivewheelsfromslippingduringacceler-
ation.Thisimprovesroadsafetyonslippery
surfaces.Undercertainconditions,suchas
whendrivingwithsnowchainsorindeep
snoworsand,itmaybebeneficialto
deactivatetheSCfunctiontoincrease
traction.ThisisdonewiththeSTC/DSTC
button.
ActiveYawControl(AYC)
TheActiveYawControlfunctionautomati-
callybrakesoneormorewheelstostabilise
thecarintheeventofaskid.Ifthebrake
pedalweretobedepressedinthissituation,
itwouldfeelmorerigidthanusualanda
pulsingsoundwouldbeheard.
TheAYCfunctionisalwaysactiveandcannot
