airinthepassengercompartmentiscleaner
thantheairoutside.
Thesystemconsistsofanelectronicsensor
andacarbonfilter.Theairintakeisclosedif
thelevelofreducinggasesandoxidising
gases,e.g.carbonmonoxide,becomestoo
high,forexampleinheavytowntraffic,
queuesandtunnels.Theentryofnitrous
oxides,ground-levelozoneandhydrocarbons
ispreventedbythecarbonfilter.TextilestandardTheinteriorofaVolvoisdesignedtobe
healthyandsafe-evenforpeoplewith
contactallergiesandforasthmasufferers.
Extremeattentionhasbeengiventochoosing
environmentally-compatiblematerials.This
meansthattheyalsofulfiltherequirementsof
theÖko-Tex100ecologicalstandard-a
majoradvancetowardsahealthiercabin
environment.
Öko-Texcertificationcoversseatbelts,
carpets,threadandfabricsforexample.Even
theleatherupholsteryundergoeschromium-freetanningwithnaturalplantsubstances
andmeetstherequirements.
Volvoworkshopsandthe
environmentRegularmaintenancecarriedoutbyan
authorisedVolvoworkshopcreatesthe
conditionsforlongservicelifeandlowfuel
consumption,andcontributestoacleaner
environment.WhenVolvo’sworkshopsare
entrustedwiththerepairandmaintenanceof
thecar,itbecomespartofoursystem.We
makeclearenvironmentaldemands
regardingthewayinwhichworkshopsare
designedinordertopreventspillsand
dischargesintotheenvironment,andthis
includesthethoroughcollectionandsorting
ofthegaseous,liquidandsolidwastethat
arisesinourworkshops.Ourworkshopstaff
havetheknowledgeandthetoolsrequiredto
guaranteegoodenvironmentalcare.
ReducingenvironmentalimpactYoucanhelpreduceenvironmentalimpact,
forexample,bypurchasingeco-labelledcar
careproductsandbyservicingand
maintainingthecaraccordingtotheinstruc-
tionsintheowner’smanual.
Thefollowinghintswillhelpyoutodoyourbit
fortheenvironment:
Ensurethatyourtyrepressuresare
correct.Poorlyinflatedtyresincreasefuel
consumption.Ifanyofthehighertyre
pressuresrecommendedbyVolvoare
usedthenfuelconsumptiondecreases.
Sincearoofrackandski
boxincreaseair
resistance,leadingto
significantlyhigherfuel
consumption,they
shouldberemoved
immediatelyafteruse.
Removeunnecessaryitemsfromthecar-
thegreatertheloadthehigherthefuel
consumption.
Isyourcarequippedwithanengineblock
heater?Ifso,useitforafewhoursbefore
startingfromcoldtoreducefuel
consumptionandexhaustemissions.

brakingtoohard.

bonnetandthewindscreen).FaulttracingAnauthorisedVolvoworkshophastheinstru-
mentsandtoolsrequiredforanyfaulttracing
orrepairofyourclimatecontrolsystem.
Entrustchecksandrepairsonlytotrained
personnel.RefrigerantTheairconditioningsystemcontainsR134a
refrigerant.Thisrefrigerantcontainsno
chlorine,whichmeansthatitisharmlessto
theozonelayer.Thesystemmustonlybe
chargedwithR134arefrigerant.Havean
authorisedVolvoworkshopcarryoutthis
work.
VentilationfanfunctionWhentheengineisoff(andiftheignitionkey
isinpositionIorII),theventilationfanis
automaticallyswitchedoff.Thisistoprevent
thebatteryfrombecomingdischarged.
Toactivatetheventilationfan,turnthefan
controlandsetthedesiredspeed.CarswithECCActualtemperature
Thetemperatureyouselectcorrespondsto
thephysicalexperiencewithreferencetoair
speed,humidity,exposuretosun,etc.which
affecttheinteriorandexteriorofthecar.
Sensors
Thesunsensorisontheupperportionofthe
dashboard.Remembernottocoverit.Donot
coverthepassengercompartmenttemper-
aturesensorontheclimatecontrolpanel.
Sidewindowsandsunroof
Toensurethattheairconditioningworks
satisfactorily,closeallsidewindowsandthe
sunroof(iffitted).
Acceleration
Theairconditioningsystemswitchesoff
temporarilyatfullacceleration.Youmayfeel
atemporaryriseintemperature.Condensation
Inwarmweather,condensationfromtheair
conditioningsystemmaydripunderthecar.
Thisisnormal.
Fueleconomy
WithECC,theairconditioningsystemis
controlledautomaticallyandisusedjust
enoughtocoolthepassengercompartment
andtoadequatelydehumidifytheincoming
air.Thisprovidesbetterfueleconomy
comparedtoconventionalsystemswherethe
airconditioningcoolstheairtojustabove
freezingpoint.

LEDislit.Thisway,incomingairiscooled
anddehumidifiedsufficiently.WhenA/C
OFFisselectedandtheOFFLEDcomeson,
theairconditioningsystemisalwaysdiscon-
nected;otherfunctionsarestillcontrolled
automatically.Theairconditioningsystem
operatesdowntoapproximately0°C.2.Airqualitysystem(optionin
certainmarkets)Certaincarsareequippedwitha"Multifilter"
andairqualitysensor.TheMultifilter
separatesgasesandparticles,thusreducing
thevolumeofodoursandpollutants.Theairqualitysensordetectsincreasedlevelsof
contaminantsintheoutsideair.Whentheair
qualitysensordetectscontaminatedoutside
air,theairintakeisclosedandtheairinthe
passengercompartmentisrecirculated.The
Multifilteralsocleanstheairrecirculatingin
thepassengercompartment.
Whentheairqualitysensorisactive,the
greenAUTLEDlightsin.
Operation
Presstoactivatetheairquality
sensor(normalsetting).

Keepinmindthefollowing:
Makeitaruletohavetheairquality
sensoractivatedatalltimes.
Recirculationislimitedincoldweatherto
avoidmisting.
Ifmistingoccurs,youshoulddeactivate
theairqualitysensor.
Ifmistingoccurs,youcanusethe
defrosterfunctionsforthewindscreen,
sidewindowsandrearwindow.
FollowtheVolvoServiceProgrammefor
therecommendedreplacementintervalof
theMultifilter.Ifthecarisusedina
severelycontaminatedenvironment,it
maybenecessarytochangetheMulti-
filtermoreoften.
3.RecirculationRecirculationcanbeusedtoshutoutbadair,
exhaust,etc.fromthepassenger
compartment.Theairinthepassenger
compartmentisthenrecirculated,i.e.noair
fromoutsidethecaristakenintothecar
whenthisfunctionisactivated.
Ifyouallowtheairinthecartorecirculate,
thereisariskoficingandmisting,especially
inwinter.
Thetimerfunction(carswithMultifilterandair
qualitysensorhavenotimerfunction)
minimisestheriskforice,mistingandbadair.
Activatethefunctionasfollows:
–Pressformorethan3seconds.
TheLEDflashesfor5seconds.Theair
recirculatesinthecarfor3–12minutes
dependingontheoutsidetemperature.
–Thetimerfunctionisactivatedeachtime
youpress.
Toswitchoffthetimerfunction:
–Pressagainformorethan
3seconds.TheLEDlightsfor5seconds
toconfirmyourselection.
4.AUTOAUTOfunctionautomaticallyregulates
climatecontrolsothatthedesiredtemper-
atureisattained.Theautomaticfunction
controlsheating,airconditioning,airquality
sensor,fanspeed,recirculation,andair
distribution.Ifyouselectoneormore
functionsmanually,theotherfunctions
continueoperatingautomatically.Allmanual
settingsareswitchedoffwhenAUTOis
pressed.5.AirdistributionWhenthetopbuttonisdepressed,airis
directedtothewindows.
Whenthecentrebuttonisdepressed,air
isdirectedtotheheadandbody.
Whenthelowerbuttonisdepressed,air
isdirectedtothelegsandfeet.
PressAUTOtoreturntoautomaticairdistri-

theenginedoesnotstartwithin5–
10seconds,releasethekey(seealso
"Autostart",page116)andtryagain.
NOTE!Theidlingspeedcanbenoticeably
higherthannormalforcertainenginetypes
duringcoldstarting.Thisissothatthe
emissionssystemcanreachnormal
operatingtemperatureasquicklyaspossible,
whichminimisesexhaustemissionsand
protectstheenvironment.Startingtheengine(Diesel)–Depresstheparkingbrake.
–Automaticgearbox:Gearselectorin
positionPorN.
Manualgearbox:Gearleverinneutralandtheclutchpedalcompletelydepressed.
Thisisespeciallyimportantinseverecold.

Dieselparticlefilter
(certainmodels)Certaindieselcarsareequippedwitha
particlefilterwhichresultsinadditionally
effectiveemissioncontrol.Whentheengine
reachesitsnormaloperatingtemperature
(theengineiswarm)aso-called"regener-
ation"ofthefiltertakesplaceautomatically,
whichmeansthattheparticlescollectedin
thefilterareburnedawayandthefilteris
emptied.
Regenerationtakesbetween10and
15minutes.Duringthistimefuel
consumptionmayincreaseslightly.Winterdriving
Ifthecarisfrequentlydrivenshortdistances
incoldweatherthentheenginedoesnot
reachnormaloperatingtemperature.This
meansthatregenerationofthedieselparticle
filterdoesnottakeplaceandthefilterisnot
emptied.
Whenthefilterhasbecomeapprox.80%full
ofparticlesthenayellowwarningtrianglein
thedashboarddisplayisshownalongwith
thewarningtextSOOTFILTERFULLSEE
MANUAL.
Regenerationshouldbecarriedoutregularly
ifthecarisfrequentlydrivenshortdistances
incoldweatherinordertoavoidimpaired
functionofthefilter.
Startregenerationofthefilterbydriving
thecaruntiltheenginereachesnormal
operatingtemperature,preferablyona
mainroadormotorway.Thecarshould
thenbedrivenforapproximately
20minutesmore.
Toclearthewarningtextwhenregener-
ationiscomplete,switchofftheignition,
removethekey,waitforatleastthree
minutesandswitchtheignitiononagain.
Usetheparkingheater(option)incold
weathersothattheenginereaches
normaloperatingtemperaturemore
quickly.
