positionedlowdown.AlwaysuseaseatbeltHeavybrakingcanhaveseriousconse-
quencesiftheseatbeltsarenotused.Ensure
thatallpassengersusetheirseatbelts.Other-
wise,rearseatpassengersmaybethrown
forwardagainstthebacksofthefrontseatsin
acollision.
Puttingonaseatbelt:
–Pullthebeltoutslowlyandsecureitby
pressingthebuckleintothelock.Aloud
"click"indicatesthatthebelthaslocked.Releasingthebelt:
–Presstheredlockbuttonandletthebelt
retract.Ifthebeltdoesnotretractfully,
feedthebeltinbyhandsothatitdoesnot
hanglose.
Thebeltlocksandcannotbewithdrawn:
ifitispulledouttooquickly
duringbrakingandacceleration
ifthecarleansheavily.
Itisimportantthatthebeltliesagainstthe
bodysoitcanprovidemaximumprotection.
Donotleanthebackresttoofarback.The
seatbeltisdesignedtoprotectinanormal
seatingposition.
Keepthefollowinginmind:
donotuseclipsoranythingelsethatcan
preventthebeltfromfittingproperly
ensurethebeltisnotbetwistedor
caughtonanything
thehipstrapmustbepositionedlow
down(notovertheabdomen)
tensionthehipstrapoverthelapby
pullingthediagonalshoulderbeltasillus-
trated.

seatbeltisnotusedorisusedincorrectly,
thismaydiminishtheprotectionprovided

Ifthebelthasbeensubjectedtoamajor
load,suchasinacollision,theentirebelt
mustbereplaced.Someoftheprotective
characteristicsofthebeltmayhavebeen
lost,evenifitappearstobeundamaged.
Replacetheseatbeltifthebeltiswornor
damaged.Thenewseatbeltmustbetype-
approvedandintendedforinstallationin
thesamepositionasthereplacedbelt.

SeatbeltsSeatbeltreminderTheseatbeltwarningsymbolinthecombined
instrumentpanelandabovetherearview
mirrorcomesonuntilthedriverandfrontseat
passengerbuckletheirseatbelts.Theseat-
beltreminderswitchesoffafter6secondsif
speedisbelow10km/h.Ifthedriverorfront
seatpassengerhavenotbuckledtheirseat-
belts,thereminderswitchesonagainwhen
thespeedexceeds10km/handswitchesoff
ifthespeeddropsbelow5km/h.
Iftheseatbeltisreleased,thefunctionreacti-
vateswhenspeedexceeds10km/h.NOTE!Theseatbeltreminderisintendedfor
anadultsittinginthefrontseat.Ifabelt-fitted
childseatisfittedinthefrontseat,the
seatbeltreminderdoesnotswitchon.
SeatbeltsandpregnancyTheseatbeltshouldalwaysbewornduring
pregnancy.Butitiscrucialthatitbewornin
thecorrectway.Thediagonalsectionshould
wrapovertheshoulderthenberouted
betweenthebreastsandtothesideofthe
belly.Thelapsectionshouldlayflatoverthe
thighsandaslowaspossibleunderthebelly.
Itmustneverbeallowedtorideupward.
Removeallslackfromthebeltandinsurethat
itfitsclosetothebodywithoutanytwists.
Asapregnancyprogresses,pregnantdrivers
shouldadjusttheirseatsandsteeringwheel
suchthattheycaneasilymaintaincontrolof
thevehicleastheydrive(whichmeansthey
mustbeabletoeasilyoperatethefootpedals
andsteeringwheel).Withinthiscontext,they
shouldstrivetopositiontheseatwithaslarge
adistanceaspossiblebetweentheirbelly
andthesteeringwheel.

Sideairbags(SIPSbags)SideairbaglocationsSideairbags–(SIPSbags)Alargeproportionofthecollisionforceis
transferredbytheSIPS(SideImpactProtec-
tionSystem)tothefloor,roof,beams,pillars,
andotherstructuralpartsofthebody.The
sideairbagsonthedriver’sandfrontpassen-
gerseatsprotectthechestareaandarean
importantpartoftheSIPS.Thesideairbags
arelocatedinthefrontseatbackrests.
Inflatedsideairbag
ChildseatsandsideairbagsThesideairbagdoesnotdiminishtheprotec-
tionprovidedbythecartochildrenseatedin
achildseatoronaboostercushion.
Achildseatorboostercushioncanbe
placedonthefrontpassengerseatprovided
thatthecardoesnothaveanactivated

sengerairbag.

InflatableCurtain(IC)PropertiesTheinflatablecurtain,IC(InflatableCurtain),
isasupplementtotheSIPSsystem.Itiscon-
cealedintheheadliningalongbothsidesof
theroofandprotectsbothfrontandrearseat
passengers.Theinflatablecurtainisacti-
vatedbysensorsinasufficientlyviolentcolli-
sionorifthecarisatriskfromoverturning.
Whendeployed,theinflatablecurtain
inflates.Theinflatablecurtainhelpstopre-
ventthedriverandpassengersfromstriking
theirheadsontheinsideofthecarduringa
collision.
IntheVolvoXC90,theinflatablecurtains
havebeendevelopedtoprotectoccupantsin
theeventofoverturning.Theinflatablecurtain
alsocoversthosetravellinginthethirdrowof
seatsinthevariantthatseatsseven.
WARNING!
Neverhangorfastenanythingontheroof
handles.Thehookisonlyintendedfor
lightoutergarments(notforhardobjects
suchasumbrellas).
Donotscreworfitanythingtothe
headlining,doorpillarsorsidepanels.
Thiscouldcompromisetheintended
protection.OnlyuseVolvogenuineparts
thatareapprovedforplacementinthese
areas.

System)consistsofenergyabsorbingback-
restsandspeciallydesignedheadrestraints
forthefrontseats.Thesystemisactuatedby
arear-endcollision,wheretheangleand
speedofthecollision,andthepropertiesof
thecollidingvehicleallhaveaninfluence.
PropertiesoftheseatWhentheWHIPSsystemisdeployed,the
frontseatbackrestsfallbackwardtoalterthe
positionofthedriverandfrontseatpassen-
ger.Thisdiminishestheriskofwhiplash
injury.
WHIPSsystemandchildseats/
boostercushionsTheWHIPSsystemdoesnotdiminishthe
protectionprovidedbythecartochildren
seatedinachildseatoronabooster
cushion.CorrectseatingpositionForthebestpossibleprotection,thedriver
andfrontseatpassengershouldsitinthe
centreoftheseatwithaslittlespaceaspos-
siblebetweentheheadandthehead
restraint.

overturningandtoprovidethebestpossible
protectionintheeventofanaccident.
Thesystemconsistsof:
Astabilisersystem,RSC(RollStability
Control)thatminimisestheriskof
overturningduringsuddenevasive
manoeuvresorthelikeorifthecarskids.
Increasedprotectionforthedriverand
passengersthroughareinforcedbody,
inflatablecurtainsandseatbelttensioners
inallseats.Seealsopage12and
page21.
TheRSCsystemusesagyrosensorwhich
registerschangesinthecar’slateralinclina-
tionangle.Thisinformationisthenusedto
calculatetheriskforoverturning.Ifariskis
detected,theDSTCsystemisengaged,
enginespeedisreducedandoneormore
wheelsarebrakeduntilthecarreturnstoa
stableposition.
