WARNING!
l Never try to open, remove, or repair any components in the OWS system. T\
his could result in
system malfunction. Maintenance or repairs should only be carried out by\
an authorized Volvo
service technician.
l The front passenger's seat should not be modified in any way. This could\
reduce pressure on the
seat cushion, which might interfere with the OWS system's function.

Occupant Weight Sensor (OWS) (contd)
WARNING!
Keep the following points in mind with respect to the OWS system. Failur\
e to follow these
instructions could adversely affect the system's function and result in \
serious injury to the occupant of
the front passenger's seat:
l The full weight of the front seat passenger should always be on the seat\
cushion. The passenger
should never lift him/herself off the seat cushion using the armrest in \
the door or the center console,
by pressing the feet on the floor, by sitting on the edge of the seat cu\
shion, or by pressing against the
backrest in a way that reduces pressure on the seat cushion. This could \
cause OWS to disable the
front passenger's side airbag.
l Do not place any type of object on the front passenger's seat in such a \
way that jamming, pressing,
or squeezing occurs between the object and the front seat, other than as\
a direct result of the correct
use of the ALR/ ELR seat belt (see
page 19).
l No objects should be placed under the front passenger's seat. This could\
interfere with the OWS
system's function.

Hazard warning flashers
The four-way flasher should be used to indicate that the vehicle has bec\
ome a traffic hazard. To activate
the flashers, press the triangular button in the center dash. Press the \
button again to turn off the flashers.
NOTE: Regulations regarding the use of the hazard warning flasher may vary, de\
pending on where you
live.
Sideview mirror and rear window defroster
Press the switch to start heating the rear window and sideview mirrors t\
o remove ice or condensation.
An LED in the switch will light up.
A timer automatically switches off the heating to the sideview mirrors a\
fter approximately 4 minutes and
to the rear window after approximately 12 minutes. The LED will go out c\
orrespondingly.
Heated front seats (option)

Folding the backrests - third row of seats (option)
Folding down the backrest
If necessary, fold in the load anchorage eyelets before folding down the\
backrests.
1. Move the seats in the second row forward, see
page 62.
2. Pull up the handle in illustration 1 above.
3. Push the seat cushion firmly rearward, under the backrest.
4. Fold down the backrests* (the head restraints fold down automaticall\
y) to the horizontal position.
Returning the backrest to the upright position
l Fold up the backrest to the upright position.
l Grasp the strap (see illustration 3 above) and pull the seat cushion o\
ut until it locks in place. This also
locks the backrest in the upright position.
* Please note that the head restraints in this row cannot be vertically \
adjusted.

Interior lighting
Courtesy light/front reading lights
The courtesy/reading lights can be turned on or off by pressing the resp\
ective buttons.
The courtesy light has a timer function which turns the light
1 on for 30 seconds if:
l You unlock the vehicle from the outside with the key or remote control. \
l You switch off the ignition (turn the key to position 0).
The courtesy light stays on for 10 minutes if one of the doors is left o\
pen after the vehicle is unlocked.

The courtesy light switches off if:
l The engine is started.
l The vehicle is locked from the outside with the key or remote control.
The courtesy light can be switched off or on in all situations by briefl\
y pressing the button.
When you switch the light on, it remains lit for 10 minutes.
You can disconnect the automatic function by pressing the courtesy light\
button for more than 3
seconds. Briefly pressing the courtesy light button again automatically \
reconnects the function.
The courtesy light timer periods can be changed. Contact your Volvo reta\
iler.
Rear reading lights
l The reading lights can be switched on or off by pressing the respective \
buttons.
l Seven-seat models: Both reading lights for the third row of seats will switch on if one of \
the buttons
is pressed.
l The reading lights switch off automatically after 10 minutes if the engi\
ne is not running.
l The lights can be switched off at any time by pressing the button.

Refueling
ENGINE OIL
Although some oil consumption occurs during normal engine operation, mor\
e oil is consumed when the
engine is new as the internal parts generate higher friction while weari\
ng-in to each other. From the time
the engine is new until the first maintenance is performed, the oil cons\
umption could be higher than
normal. For this reason, it is especially important to check the oil eve\
ry time you refuel your vehicle
during this period. See
page 149.
Fuel requirements
Octane rating
Volvo engines are designed for optimum performance on unleaded premium g\
asoline with an AKI
octane rating of 91 or above. AKI (ANTI KNOCK INDEX) is an average of \
the Research Octane
Number, RON, and the Motor Octane Number, MON. ((RON + MON)/2). The \
minimum octane
requirement is AKI 87 (RON 91).
Deposit control gasoline (detergent additives)
Volvo recommends the use of detergent gasoline to control engine deposit\
s. Detergent gasoline is
effective in keeping injectors and intake valves clean. Consistent use o\
f deposit control gasolines will
help ensure good driveability and fuel economy. If you are not sure whet\
her the gasoline contains
deposit control additives, check with the service station operator.
NOTE: Volvo does not recommend the use of external fuel injector cleaning syst\
ems.
Unleaded fuel
Each Volvo has a three-way catalytic converter and must use only unleade\
d gasoline. U.S. and Canadian
regulations require that pumps delivering unleaded gasoline be labelled \
"UNLEADED". Only these
pumps have nozzles which fit your vehicle's filler inlet. It is unlawful\
to dispense leaded fuel into a
vehicle labelled "unleaded gasoline only". Leaded gasoline damages the t\
hree-way catalytic converter
and the heated oxygen sensor system. Repeated use of leaded gasoline wil\
l lessen the effectiveness of
the emission control system and could result in loss of emission warrant\
y coverage. State and local
vehicle inspection programs will make detection of misfueling easier, po\
ssibly resulting in emission test
failure for misfueled vehicles.
NOTE: Some U.S. and Canadian gasolines contain an octane enhancing additive ca\
lled methyl-
cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT). If such fuels are used, \
your Emission Control System
performance may be affected, and the Check Engine Light (malfunction in\
dicator lamp) located on your
instrument panel may light. If this occurs, please return your vehicle t\
o an authorized Volvo retailer for
maintenance.

3. Without touching the accelerator pedal, turn the ignition key* to the\
starting position. Allow the
starter to operate for up to 10 seconds. Release the key as soon as the \
engine starts. If the engine fails to
start, repeat this step.
NOTE:
- On certain models, when the vehicle is started, idle speed may be noti\
ceably higher than normal for a
short period, depending on the temperature of the engine.
This has been done to help bring components in the emission control syst\
em to their normal operating
temperature as quickly as possible, which enables them to function norma\
lly.
- For cold starts at altitudes above 6000 ft (1800 meters), depress th\
e accelerator pedal halfway and turn
the key to the starting position. Release the pedal slowly when the engi\
ne starts.
4. To release the gear selector from the (P)ark position, the engine must be running (or the ignition key
must be in position II) and the brake pedal must be depressed.
5. Select the desired gear. The gear engages after a very slight delay w\
hich is especially noticeable when
selecting R.
NOTE: Your vehicle is equipped with a Keylock system. When the engine is switc\
hed off, the gear
selector must be in the (P)ark position before the key can be removed from the ignition switch.
When starting in cold weather, the transmission may shift up at slightly\
higher engine speeds than
normal until the automatic transmission fluid reaches normal operating t\
emperature.
Do not race a cold engine immediately after starting. Oil flow may not r\
each some lubrication points fast
enough to prevent engine damage.
* If two of the keys to your vehicle are close together, e.g., on the sa\
me key ring, when you try to start
the vehicle, this could cause interference in the immobilizer system and\
result in the vehicle not starting.
If this should occur, remove one of the keys from the key ring before tr\
ying to start the vehicle again. CAUTION
Automatic transmission
The engine should be idling when you move the gear selector. Never accel\
erate until after you feel
the transmission engage! Accelerating immediately after selecting a gear\
will cause harsh engagement
and premature transmission wear.
Selecting P or N when idling at a standstill for prolonged periods of time will help pre\
vent
overheating of the automatic transmission fluid.

Positioning the load carriers
Make sure that the wing-shaped load carriers are installed on the roof r\
ails with the rounded edge
forward (see the inset illustration above). The load carriers are iden\
tical and can be placed anywhere
along the roof rails.
When not in use, we recommend that the front load carrier be placed appr\
oximately 2 inches (5 cm) in
front of the center roof rail anchorage point and the rear load carrier \
approximately 1.5 inches (3.5 cm)
in front of the rear rail anchorage. This will help to reduce wind noise\
.
NOTE: Volvo accessories mounted on these load carriers will require T-track mo\
unting hardware for
correct installation. Please consult your Volvo retailer.
Installing the load carriers
Make sure that the load carrier is pressed firmly out against the roof r\
ail. Screw the load carrier in place.
Use the supplied torque wrench and tighten to the mark on the wrench (c\
orresponding to 6 Nm). See
illustration.

l In areas of high industrial fallout, more frequent washing is recommende\
d.
l After cleaning the engine, the spark plug wells should be inspected for \
water and blown dry if
necessary.
Suitable detergents: Special vehicle washing detergents should be used. A suitable mixture i\
s about 2.5
fl. oz. (8.5 cl) of detergent to 2.6 US gal. (10 liters) of warm wat\
er. After washing with a detergent the
vehicle should be well rinsed with clean water.
Exterior plastic components
Cleaning exterior plastic components should be done with a cleaning agen\
t specially designed for this
purpose. Solvents or stain removers should not be used. Consult your Vol\
vo retailer.
CAUTION
- During high pressure washing, the spray mouthpiece must never be close\
r to the vehicle than
13" (30 cm). Do not spray into the locks.
- When washing or steam cleaning the engine, avoid spraying water or ste\
am directly on the electrical
components or toward the rear side of the engine.
Special moonroof cautions:
- Always close the moonroof and visor before washing your vehicle.
- Never use abrasive cleaning agents on the moonroof.
- Never use wax on the rubber seals around the moonroof.
NOTE: When washing the vehicle, remember to remove dirt from the drain holes i\
n the doors and sills.
WARNING!
When the vehicle is driven immediately after being washed, apply the bra\
kes several times in order to
remove any moisture from the brake linings.
Engine cleaning agents should not be used when the engine is warm. This \
constitutes a fire risk.
pg. 137 Vehicle care
Automatic washing - simple and quick
l We do NOT recommend washing your vehicle in an automatic wash during the\
first six months
(because the paint will not have hardened sufficiently).
l An automatic wash is a simple and quick way to clean your vehicle, but i\
t is worth remembering that
it may not be as thorough as when you yourself go over the vehicle with \
sponge and water. Keeping the
underbody clean is most important, especially in the winter. Some automa\
tic washers do not have
facilities for washing the underbody.
l Before driving into an automatic car wash, make sure that side view mirr\
ors, auxiliary lamps, etc, are

The floor mats should be vacuumed or brushed clean regularly, especially\
during winter when they
should be taken out for drying. Spots on textile mats can be removed wit\
h a mild detergent.
pg. 139 Vehicle care
Paint touch up
Paint damage requires immediate attention to avoid rusting. Make it a ha\
bit to check the finish regularly
- when washing the vehicle for instance. Touch-up if necessary.
Paint repairs require special equipment and skill. Contact your Volvo re\
tailer for any extensive damage.
Minor scratches can be repaired by using Volvo touch-up paint.
NOTE: When ordering touch-up paint from your Volvo retailer, use the paint cod\
e indicated on the
model plate. The plate is located in the engine compartment.
Color code
Make sure you have the right color. The color code number is on the data\
plate in the engine
compartment.
Minor stone chips and scratches
Material:
l Primer - can
l Paint - touch-up pen
l Brush
l Masking tape
l If the stone chip has not gone down to the bare metal and an undamaged c\
olor coat remains, you can
add paint immediately after removing dirt.
NOTE: When touching up the vehicle, it should be clean and dry. The surface te\
mperature should be
above 60° F (15° C).

- The wheel and tire sizes for your Volvo are specified to meet stringen\
t stability and handling
requirements. Unapproved wheel/ tire size combinations can negatively af\
fect your vehicle's stability
and handling. Approved tire sizes are shown in the Tire inflation pressu\
re tables on
page 116.
- Any damage caused by installation of unapproved wheel/tire size combin\
ations will not be covered
by your new vehicle warranty. Volvo assumes no responsibility for death,\
injury, or expenses that
may result from such installations.
pg. 113 Wheels and tires
New tires
Remember that tires are perishable goods. As of 2000, the manufacturing \
week and year will be
indicated with 4 digits (e.g. 1502 means that the tire illustrated was \
manufactured during week 15 of
2002).
Tire age
Tires degrade over time, even when they are not being used, which can af\
fect their reliability and
roadholding characteristics. Therefore, all tires older than 6 years (i\
ncluding the spare tire and winter
tires) should be inspected by a qualified technician, regardless of app\
earance or mileage. Heat caused by
hot climates or frequent high loading conditions can accelerate the agin\
g process.
A tire's age can be determined by the DOT stamp on the sidewall (see th\
e illustration above).
A tire with e.g., visible cracks or discoloration should be replaced imm\
ediately.
Improving tire economy:
l Maintain correct tire pressure. See the tire pressure table on page 116.
l Drive smoothly: avoid fast starts, hard braking and tire screeching.
l Tire wear increases with speed.
l Correct front wheel alignment is very important.
