WARNING
•Do not connect the jumper cable to any part of the fuel system or to any movingparts. Avoid touching hot manifolds.
• Batteries generate hydrogen gas, whichis flammable and explosive.
• Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Do notallow battery fluid to contact eyes, skin,fabrics or painted surfaces. If contactoccurs, flush the affected area immedi-ately with water. Obtain medical helpimmediately if eyes are affected.
• Never expose the battery to open flameor electric spark.
• Do not smoke near the battery.
• Failure to follow the instructions for jumpstarting can lead to injury.

Fuel Volvo recommends the use of detergent gaso- line to control engine deposits.
Deposit control gasoline (detergent
additives)
Detergent gasoline is effective in keeping injec- tors and intake valves clean. Consistent use ofdeposit control gasolines will help ensure gooddrivability and fuel economy. If you are not surewhether the gasoline contains deposit controladditives, check with the service station operator.
NOTE
Volvo does not recommend the use of exter- nal fuel injector cleaning systems.
Unleaded fuelEach Volvo has a three-way catalytic converter and must use only unleaded gasoline. U.S. andCanadian regulations require that pumps deliver-ing unleaded gasoline be labeled "UNLEADED".Only these pumps have nozzles which fit yourvehicle's filler inlet. It is unlawful to dispense lea-ded fuel into a vehicle labeled "unleaded gaso-line only". Leaded gasoline damages the three-way catalytic converter and the heated oxygensensor system. Repeated use of leaded gasolinewill lessen the effectiveness of the emission con-trol system and could result in loss of emissionwarranty coverage. State and local vehicle inspection programs will make detection of mis-fueling easier, possibly resulting in emission testfailure for misfueled vehicles.
NOTE
Some U.S. and Canadian gasolines contain an octane enhancing additive called methyl-cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl(MMT). If such fuels are used, your EmissionControl System performance may be affected,and the Check Engine Light (malfunctionindicator light) located on your instrumentpanel may light. If this occurs, please returnyour vehicle to a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician for service.
Gasoline containing alcohol and ethers, "Oxygenated fuels"
Some fuel suppliers sell gasoline containing "oxygenates" which are usually alcohols orethers. In some areas, state or local laws requirethat the service pump be marked indicating useof alcohols or ethers. However, there are areas inwhich the pumps are unmarked. If you are notsure whether there is alcohol or ethers in thegasoline you buy, check with the service stationoperator. To meet seasonal air quality standards,some areas require the use of "oxygenated" fuel. Volvo allows the use of the following "oxygen- ated" fuels; however, the octane ratings listedmust still be met.

To refuel:
1. Open the fuel filler door. Do not refuel with
the engine running 3
2. Insert the pump's nozzle into the fuel filler pipe's opening as far as possible (see the
illustration).
3. Avoid overfilling the fuel tank. Do not press the handle on the filler nozzle after it has stopped pumping. Too much fuel in the tankin hot weather conditions can cause the fuelto overflow. Overfilling could also cause dam-age to the emission control systems.
CAUTION
Avoid spilling gasoline during refueling. In addition to causing damage to the environ-ment, gasolines containing alcohol can causedamage to painted surfaces, which may notbe covered under the New Vehicle LimitedWarranty.

Emission controls
Three-way catalytic converter
•Keep your engine properly tuned. Certain engine malfunctions, particularly involving theelectrical, fuel or distributor ignition systems,may cause unusually high three-way catalyticconverter temperatures. Do not continue tooperate your vehicle if you detect enginemisfire, noticeable loss of power or otherunusual operating conditions, such as engineoverheating or backfiring. A properly tunedengine will help avoid malfunctions thatcould damage the three-way catalytic con-verter.
• Do not park your vehicle over combustiblematerials, such as grass or leaves, which cancome into contact with the hot exhaust sys-tem and cause such materials to ignite undercertain wind and weather conditions.
• Excessive starter cranking (in excess of oneminute), or an intermittently firing or floodedengine can cause three-way catalytic con-verter or exhaust system overheating.
• Remember that tampering or unauthorizedmodifications to the engine, the Engine Con-trol Module, or the vehicle may be illegal andcan cause three-way catalytic converter orexhaust system overheating. This includes:altering fuel injection settings or compo-nents, altering emission system components or location or removing components, and/orrepeated use of leaded fuel.NOTE
Unleaded fuel is required for vehicles with three-way catalytic converters.
Heated oxygen sensorsThe heated oxygen sensors monitor the oxygen content of the exhaust gases. Readings are fedinto a control module that continuously monitorsengine functions and controls fuel injection. Theratio of fuel to air into the engine is continuouslyadjusted for efficient combustion to help reduceharmful emissions.

If the engine is running when the vehicle is refueled, the Check Engine Light (malfunction indicator lamp) may indicate a fault. However, your vehicle's performance will not be affected.

After being transported, the vehicle's location on the map is not correct
If the vehicle has been transported (e.g., on a ferry or train) where GPS signals have beenblocked, it may take up to 5 minutes before itslocation will be shown correctly.
The car symbol moves erratically after
new tires have been installed
In addition to GPS signals, the navigation systemalso uses the speedometer and a gyroscopicsensor to calculate the vehicle's current locationand speed. If e.g., a spare tire or snow tires havebeen installed, the system has to "learn" the newtire dimensions. To do so, drive for a short periodon a road with unobstructed GPS reception.
The map does not correspond to actual road conditions
Due to road changes/additions/rerouting/newtraffic regulations, the map database may not beup-to-date. The database is continuously beingupdated. Consult your Volvo retailer.
The car symbol jumps forward or spinsBefore you begin to drive, the system may needseveral seconds to determine the vehicle's loca-tion. Switch off the navigation system and the ignition.Restart but remain at a standstill for a minute orso before driving.
The map information is not up-to-dateSee the next heading.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) TPMS provides a warning if inflation pressure in one or more tires is too low. It also uses a sym-bol (called a telltale) that will flash for60 seconds and then glow steadily if there is asystem malfunction.
TPMS uses sensors mounted in the tire valves to check inflation pressure levels. When the vehicleis moving at a speed of approximately 20 mph(30 km/h) or faster, these sensors transmit infla-tion pressure data to a receiver located in thevehicle. If inflation pressure is too low, an indica-tor symbol will illuminate in the instrument paneland a text message will be displayed.
SymbolExplanation
The symbol illuminates to indicate low tire inflation pressure. If a malfunction occurs in the sys- tem, the tire pressure warning sym-bol will flash for approximately1 minute and then remain illumi-nated.
Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should be checked monthly when cold and inflated tothe inflation pressure recommended by the vehi-cle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tireinflation pressure label. (If your vehicle has tires of a different size than the size indicated on thevehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label, youshould determine the proper tire inflation pres-sure for those tires.) As an added safety feature, your vehicle has been equipped with a tire pressure monitoringsystem (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pres-sure telltale when one or more of your tires issignificantly under-inflated. Accordingly, when thelow tire pressure telltale illuminates, you shouldstop and check your tires as soon as possible,and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a significantly under-inflated tire cau- ses the tire to overheat and can lead to tire fail-ure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiencyand tire tread life, and may affect the vehicle'shandling and stopping ability. Please note thatthe TPMS is not a substitute for proper tire main-tenance, and it is the driver's responsibility tomaintain correct tire pressure, even if under-infla-tion has not reached the level to trigger illumina-tion of the TPMS low tire pressure telltale. Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate when thesystem is not operating properly. The TPMS mal-function indicator is combined with the low tirepressure telltale. When the system detects a malfunction, the tell- tale will flash for approximately one minute andthen remain continuously illuminated. Thissequence will continue upon subsequent vehicle

start-ups as long as the malfunction exists. When the malfunction indicator is illuminated, the sys-tem may not be able to detect or signal low tirepressure as intended. TPMS malfunctions may occur for a variety of reasons, including the installation of replacementor alternate tires or wheels on the vehicle thatprevent the TPMS from functioning properly.Always check the TPMS malfunction telltale afterreplacing one or more tires or wheels on yourvehicle to ensure that the replacement or alter-nate tires and wheels allow the TPMS to con-tinue to function properly.
Messages in the instrument panelWhen the TPMS symbol illuminates, the following text messages may also be displayed:
•
Tire pressure low: the tire(s) affected will
also be specified.
•
Tire needs air now: the tire(s) affected will
also be specified.
•
Tire pressure system Service required.
If TPMS cannot determine which tire(s) have low inflation pressure, general messages may be dis-played, such as:

TPMS sensors can be installed on the valve hole area, on the factory-installed wheels as well as onoptional ones. If a spare wheel or other wheel without a TPMS sensor is used, a fault message will appear in theinstrument panel after driving for a few minutes. After changing wheels, always check that the new wheels have TPMS sensors to avoid a sys-tem malfunction warning. TPMS does not replace the need for regular tire inspection and maintenance.
RecommendationsTPMS sensors should be mounted on all wheelsused with the vehicle, including winter wheels.
NOTE
• If you change to tires with a different dimension than the factory-installed ones,the TPMS system must be reconfiguredfor these tires. This must be done by atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.
• If a tire is changed, or if the TPMS sensoris moved to another wheel, the rubbervalve and valve core should be replaced.
• When installing TPMS sensors, the vehi-cle must be parked for at least15 minutes with the ignition off. If thevehicle is driven within 15 minutes, aTPMS error message will be displayed.
WARNING
Incorrect inflation pressure could lead to tire failure, resulting in a loss of control of thevehicle.

Reinflating tires equipped with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System(TPMS) When low tire pressure has been detected, a message will be displayed in the instrumentpanel and the Tire Pressure Monitoring Systemsymbol will illuminate.

1. Use a tire pressure gauge to check the infla-
tion pressure of the under-inflated tire(s).
2. Re-inflate the tire(s) to the correct pressure (consult the tire pressure placard located on the driver's side B-pillar (the structural mem-ber at the side of the vehicle, at the rear ofthe driver's door opening).
3. In some cases, it may be necessary to drive the vehicle for several minutes at a speed ofat least 20 mph (30 km/h) to erase theTPMS telltale warning and the text message.Please be aware that the TPMS telltalewarning will not go out until the low tire pres-sure has been corrected.
NOTE
To help avoid incorrect tire inflation pressure, if possible only inflate the tires when they arecold. The tires are considered to be coldwhen they have the same temperature as thesurrounding (ambient) air. This temperature isnormally reached after the vehicle has beenparked for at least 3 hours. After driving a dis-tance of approximately 1 mile (1.6 km), thetires are considered to be warm.
CAUTION
When inflating tires with TPMS sensors, press the pump's mouthpiece straight onto thevalve to help avoid bending or otherwise dam-aging the valve.
