Steering Wheel
Installation
5. Install the airbag assembly with new Torx bolts.
TORX BOLT
10 N-m (1.0 kg-m, 7 Ib-ft)
Replace.
TORX BOLTS
10 N-m (1.0 kg-m, 7 Ib-ft)
Replace.
AIRBAG ASSEMBLY
6. Disconnect the short connector from the airbag 3P
connector.
7. Connect the airbag 3P connector and cable reel 3P
connector.
8. Attach the short connector to the access panel, then
install the access panel on the steering wheel lower
cover.

9. Connect the battery positive terminal, and then con-
nect the negative terminal.
10. After installing the airbag assembly, confirm proper
system operation:
• Turn the ignition to II: the instrument panel SRS
indicator light should come on for about six sec-
onds and then go off.
• Confirm operation of horn buttons.
• Confirm operation of cruise control set/resume
switch.
• Turn the steering wheel counterclockwise and
make sure the yellow gear tooth still lines up
with the alignment mark.

Safety Indicator
Indicator Input Test
SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS
component locations, precautions, and procedures in the
SRS section (24) before performing repairs or service.
Remove the dashboard lower cover, dashboard lower
pad and instrument panel. Disconnect the connector "A"
(30-P) from the gauge assembly (see page 23-127 ('93-'96)
('91-'92)).
Inspect the connector and socket terminals to be sure they
are all making good contact,
If the terminals are bent, loose, or corroded, repair
them as necessary, and recheck the system. If the terminals look OK, make the following input
tests at the connector.
– If a test indicates a problem, find and correct the
cause, then recheck the system.
– If all the input tests prove OK, the control unit must be faulty; replace it.

A/T Gear Position Indicator
Indicator Input Test
SRS components are located in this area. Review the
SRS component locations, precautions, and procedures
in the SRS section (24) before performing repairs or ser-
vice.
Remove the dashboard lower cover, dashboard lower
pad and instrument panel. Disconnect the connector
"A" 130-P) from the gauge assembly (see page 23-127
('93-'96) ('91-'92)).
Inspect the connector and socket terminals to be sure
they are all making good contact.
If the terminals are bent, loose, or corroded, repair
them as necessary, and recheck the system. If the terminals look OK, make the following input
tests at the connector.
— If a test indicates a problem, find and correct the cause, then recheck the system.
— If all the input tests prove OK, the control unit
must be faulty; replace it.

Dash Lights Brightness Control
Controller Test
1. Remove the dash lights brightness controller from
the instrument panel (see previous page).
2. Measure resistance between A and B terminals
while rotating the adjusting dial. Resistance should
vary from 0 to 20,000 ohms as the dial is rotated.
NOTE: Resistance will vary slightly with temperature.

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE (A/T) GEAR POSITION INDICATOR
A/T gear position indicator in the instrument panel shows what gear has been selected without having to look down at
the console.
ATF COOLER
With this mid-engine type car, the radiator is mounted at the front of the car, so the ATF cooler is installed directly on
the transmission housing. Position

Rear wheels locked; parking pawl engaged with parking gear on countershaft.
All clutches released.
Reverse; reverse selector engaged with countershaft reverse gear and 4th clutch locked.
All clutches released.
General driving; starts in low speed, shifts automatically, depending on vehicle
speed and throttle position. Downshifts'through 3rd, 2nd and 1st on deceleration
to stop.
The lock-up mechanism comes into operation in 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
Driving in 3rd gear; stays in 3rd gear, does not shift up and down.
For climbing or downhill and light engine braking on high speed condition.
The lock-up mecharism comes into operation.
Driving in 2nd gear; stays in 2nd gear, does not shift up and down.
For engine braking or better traction starting off on loose or slippery surface.
Driving in 1st gear, stays in 1st gear, does not shift up.
For engine braking.
GEAR SELECTION
The selector lever has seven positons:
PARK,
NEUTRAL,
1st through 4th gear positions,

1st gear.

7. Disconnect the short connector from the airbag 3-P connector.
8. Connect the airbag 3-P connector and cable reel 3-P
connector.
9. Attach the short connector to the access panel, and install the access panel on the steering wheel
lower cover.

10. Connect the battery positive terminal and then con-
nect the negative terminal.
11. After installing the airbag assembly, confirm proper system operation:
Turn the ignition to II: the instrument panel SRSindicator light should come on for about 6
seconds and then go off.
Confirm operation of horn buttons.
Confirm operation of cruise control set/resume
switch.
Turn the steering wheel counterclockwise and
make sure the yellow gear tooth still lines up with
the alignment mark.

SRS wire harnesses are routed near the steering
column.
CAUTION:
All SRS wiring harnesses are covered with
yellow outer insulation.Before disconnecting any part of the SRS wire
harness, install the short connectors (see page
23-328).
Replace the entire affected SRS harness assem-
bly if it has an open circuit or damaged wiring.
NOTE: Take care not to scratch the dashboard,
steering column and related parts.
CAUTION: When prying with a flat tip screw-
driver, wrap it with protective tape or a shop towel

3. Remove the nuts, then remove the airbag bracket (passenger's).

mounting nuts in the numbered sequence.
Remove the instrument panel and gauge assembly.

SRS wire harnesses are routed near the steering column. CAUTION: All SRS electrical wiring harnesses are covered with yellow outer insulation.
Before disconnecting the SRS wire harness, install the short connector on the airbag (see page 23-323).
Replace the entire effected SRS harness assembly if it has an open circuit or damaged wiring.
Driver's Side:
NOTE: Take care not to scratch or score the dashboard and steering column.
When prying with a flat tip screwdriver, wrap it with protective tape or shop towel to prevent damage.
Disassemble in numbered sequence.
