-When switching the ignition on, the needles
in the instrument cluster swing upward
briefly.
- The illumination for the instrument cluster
lights up whenever you switch on the igni­
tion with the
vehicle headlights off. As the
daylight fades, the instrument cluster illu­
mination likewise dims automatically and
will go out completely when the outside
light is very low . This feature is meant to re­
mind you to switch on the headlights when
outside light conditions become poor.

Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge¢ page 10, fig. 3@
only works when the ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the follow­ ing important points:
Engine cold
If the needle is at or close to the bottom of the
gauge, the engine has not yet reached its operat­
ing temperature. Avoid high engine speeds,
heavy engine loads, and heavy throttle applica­
tions .
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operating tem ­
perature, the needle will move to the middle of
the gauge and remain there. If the engine is
working hard at high outside temperatures, the
needle may move higher on the gauge . This is not
a cause for concern as long as the . warning
li ght i n the inst rument cluster display does not il­
luminate . If the . warning light in the instru­
ment cluster display flashes, this can mean one
of two things : either the coolant
temperature is
too high, or the coolant
level is too low

A WARNING
-Always observe the warning in ¢ page 203,
before opening t he hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment. You
cou ld burn yourself. Let the engine cool off
firstsothatyoucannothearo rseeany
steam or engine coo lant.
0 Note
- Mounting additional lights or accessories in
front of the air inlets reduces the cooling ef­
fect of the radiator. At h igh outside temper­
atu res or high engine load, the engine could
overheat.
- The front spoiler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the vehi­
cle is moving. If the spoiler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author­
ized Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter )
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo­
lutions per minutes).
If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area at
the end of the scale indicates maximum permis­
sible eng ine RPM after the break-in period. Be­
fore reaching this area, move the selector lever
to position D/5 or ease your foot off the accelera­
tor pedal.

should only briefly be in the red zone: you
could damage your eng ine! The beginning of
the red zone varies depending on the engine.

Upshifting early saves fuel and reduces en­
gine noise.

The !SET I button performs the following func­
tions:
Switching on time, date, temperature
display and odometer
The display appears for approximately 30 sec­
onds when you press the
ISETI button¢ fig . 4
with the ignition off.
Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system constantly monitors cer­
tain indiv idual functions and components of the
vehicle when the ignition is turned on and when
the vehicle is moving.
With the ignition turned on, you can start the
"Auto-Check sequence" by pressing the
! SETI but­
ton. You can perform an Auto-Check sequence
when the vehicle is stat ionary and the ignition is
turned on or when the vehicle is moving slower
than 3 mph (5 km/h).
In addition, the number of keys initialised for
your vehicle is displayed.
L2 3/3 means that
th ree keys have been initialised. This feature e na­
bles used car buye rs to make su re they have re­
ceived all of the keys.
If you are given only two keys, for instance, you
should take the veh icle and the existing keys to
an authorized Audi dealer to have the missing key
disabled. It is also important to notify your insur­
ance company about the loss.
Setting the speed warning
By pressing the ISETI button briefly, you can set
threshold 1 of the speed warning wh ile you are
driv ing

The light illuminates when the ignition is switch­
ed on.
It goes out afte r the engine has been
started. T his indicates that the brake warn ing
light is f unct ion ing properly.
If the brake warning light does not light up

applications, you will need greate r pressure
on the brake pedal t o stop you r vehicle. Do
not re ly on strained brakes to respond w ith
ma ximum stopping power in c rit ical situa ­
t ions. You must allow for increas ed braki ng
di stan ces. The e xtra dist ance used up by
fa din g brak es c oul d lead to a n accid ent.

The warning/indicator light monitors th e elec­
trome chanical parking brak e.

da models) t urns on , the park ing brake was set .
The warning/indicator light will go o ut when the
pa rking brake is re leased.
• (USA models ) /. (Canada models) Cau­
tion: Vehicle parked too steep
If th e ind ic ator lig ht blinks and t he message ap ­
pea rs, there is not eno ugh bra king power to keep
the vehicle from ro llin g. The bra kes have over ­
heate d. The vehicle could ro ll away even on a
sma ll incline .
Press brake pedal to release parking brake
To re lease the pa rk ing bra ke, press the bra ke
pe dal and pr ess t he bu tton<®) or start driv ing
w ith s tarti ng assis t at the s ame t ime
¢ page 86.
Please release parking brake
To re lease the park ing brake ma nually, press the
b rake pedal and press the button<®> at the same
time . The parking brake o nly re leases automati­
cally if the dr iver's safety be lt is fastened.

If the El indicato r light turns on and this mes ­
sage appears, there is a pa rking brake mal func­
tion. D rive to your authorized Aud i dealer or
qua lified workshop immed iate ly to have the mal­
f u nction co rrected .

If the indicato r light turns on and the message

o r vehicle e lectr ica l system .
D rive to your authorized A udi dealer or qualified
workshop immediately . Because the vehicle bat­
tery is d ischa rging , tur n off all unnecessa ry elec ­
trical eq uipme nt such as the rad io . Seek p ro fes­
s io na l assis tance if the battery charge leve l is too
l ow.
(•) Low battery: Battery will be charged while
driving
If the indicato r light turns on and the message
appears, there may be limited sta rting ability.
If this message t urns off after a little w hil e, t he
ba tte ry c harge d enough while dr iv ing .

thorized Audi dea le r or qualified wor ks hop co r­
r ect the ma lf u nction .

9:::1: Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immediate service or repair . Driving with a
low-oil-pressure indication is likely to inflict se ­
vere damage to the engine.
• Turn off engine! Oil pressure too low
If the indicator lig ht t urns on and the message
appears, the oi l pressu re is too low.
~ P ull off the road.
~ Stop t he vehicle .
~ Turnoff the engine.
~ Check the engine oil level¢ page 207 .
~ If the engine oil leve l is too low, add engine oi l

warning symbol. appears no longe r in the
display before you s ta rt driving ag ain.

- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, preferably each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication

requires oil refill or workshop service with ­
out delay . Do not wait until the red oil
pressure warning. starts to flash before
you respond to the low oil level warning

A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off engine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appea rs, the coo lant tempe rat ure is too high o r
t h e coo lant leve l is too low.

~ Stop the vehicle.
~ Tur noff th e engine.
~ Check coolant leve l¢ page 209 .

• Coolant temperature! Let engine run with
vehicle stationary
If the indicator lig ht tur ns on and the messa ge
appea rs, let the engine run a t idle for a few mi ­
nutes to c ool down.

• Steering defe cti ve! Do not dri ve vehicle!
If the indicator lig ht t urns on and the message
appears, there is an electronic steering column lock malf unction . You cannot switch the ignition
on.
Do
not tow your vehicle because i t cannot be
steered. Seek professional assistance.

If t he indicator light turns on and the message
appears, there is an electro nic steer ing colum n
lock malfunct ion.
Drive to your authori zed Aud i dea ler immediately
to have the malfunct ion corrected.
A WARNING
Your vehicle must not be towed in the eve nt
of a malfunction i n the elect ronic steering
co lumn lock be ca use it cannot be steered d ue
t o the locked steering. If it is towed wi th t he
steering locked, the re is the r isk of an acci ­
dent .

• Ignit ion lock defecti ve. Contact dealer!

If the Dl ind icator light blinks while driving , the
ESC o r ASR (A nti-Sl ip Regulation) is act ively regu­
l ating .
If the
G1 ind icator light turns on, the system has
switched the ESC off. In t his case, you can switch
t h e ign it io n off and then on to swi tch the ESC on
again. The indicator light t urns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fu lly .

stri cted or sw itched off using the

If the indicator l ight DJ and the ABS indicator
li ght
[IlJ (USA models) ;El] (Canada mode ls)
turn o n and the message appears, the ABS or
electron ic different ial lo ck is malfunctioning.
This also causes the ESC to malfunc tion. The
brakes st ill function with the ir norma l power, but
ABS is not active .

to have the malfunc tion cor rected .

A WARNING
If the 11111 (USA models)/ . (Canada mod­
e ls) br ake system indicator light turns on to­
gether with the ABS and ESC ind icator lights,
the ABS/ESC regulating function may have
failed. F unctions that stabilize the vehicle are
no longer ava ilab le. This could cause the vehi­
cle to swerve and increase the risk of sliding. Drive carefully to the nearest authorized Aud i
dealer and have the malfunction corrected .

This
warning/i ndicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The warning/indicator light fIE) (USA models)/
ti] (Canada models) wi ll come on for a few sec­
onds when the ig nition is switched on. The ligh t
w ill go out after an au tomatic check sequence is
comp leted.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when :
-The warning/indicator lig ht does not ill uminate
when you switch the ig nition on .
- The warning/indicator light does not go out af­
ter a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator lig ht ill uminates wh ile
driv ing .
The ESC indicator light a lso ill uminates if the re is
a ma lf u nction in the ABS. The message
Stabiliza­
tion control (ESC ): Fault! See owner's manual
als o appears in the inst rument cluste r display
and a warn ing tone sounds.
The brake system will still respond even with­
out the assistance of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible to re ­
store full braking performance.

M alfunction in the brake system

rear w heels could lock up fi rst under hard
braking . Rear wheel lock- up can cause loss
of vehicle contro l and an acc ident. Have yo ur
veh icle repaired immediately by your au ­
thorized A udi dealer or qualified workshop .

- Canada models : If the brake warn ing light

The fl (USA models)/ EI (Canada mode ls) indi­
cator lig ht monitors the safety systems (e.g. a ir ­
bags, pretens ione rs) and illum inates fo r a few
seco nds each time you swi tch the ignition on.
If the
II (USA models) tEI (Canada models) in­
dicator light does not go out, o r if it ill uminates
wh ile you a re dr iv ing, or if it sta rts to b link, t hen
t h ere is a malfunct io n somewhere in the system .
If the ligh t does not illum inate wh en yo u sw itc h
t h e igni tion o n, t his a lso means there is a mal­
funct ion.
