quence when the veh icle is stationary and the
ignit ion is turned on or when the vehicle is
moving slower than 3 mph (5 km/h).
Calling up the drive r information
A yellow or red symbol appears in the instru­
ment cluster display, usually with a driver
message . The driver message display disap­
pears after about
S seconds. The driver mes­
sage can be displayed again by briefly press­
ing the
! SET ! button.
Setting the speed warning
By pressing the I SET ! button briefly, you can
set threshold 1 of the speed warning while
you are driv ing
¢ page 28. By mainta ining
pressure on the
ISETI button, you delete the
warning threshold.

The date, time of day, time and date format
can be set in the radio or MMI *. You can learn
more about this in the MMI manual or in the
radio user's manual.
@ Tips
- The dig ital clock turns on for about 30
seconds when the driver's door is
opened.
- When the ignition is turned off, the od­
ometer reading and the digital clock with
date display can be switched on for
--about 30 seconds by pressing the iSE Ti
button ¢ page 11, fig . 4.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is
on.
When the needle reaches the red area, the

warning light in the instrument cluster will il­
luminate ¢
page 35. This means you have
approximately
2 .1 ga llons (8 liters) of fuel
left in the tank.
Time to refuel!
The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed
in
¢ page 292.
(D Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An ir­
regular supply of fuel can cause engine
misfiring and fuel could enter into the ex­
haust system. The catalytic converter
could then overheat and be damaged.
Odometer
The odometer indicates the distance driven.

ing can be more difficult or sensitive than usu­
a l. The steering wheel may also be at an ang le
when dr iving stra ight.

Have the dynamic steering system mal­
function repaired as soon as poss ible by an
authorized Audi dealer or any qualified
workshop -risk of accident!
@ Tips
- If the ,'2:"J indicator light flashes, dynam ic
steering is being re-initialized. The driver
i nformat ion system display shows the
words "Dynamic steering: initialization"
¢ page 34.
- The dynamic steering stability systems
are not available in the event of a system
malfunction.
EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control.
The ~ warn ing/indicator light (Electronic
Powe r Control) illuminates when you turn o n
the ignition as a function check.
(D Tips
If th is warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are dr iving, then the re is a mal­
function in the engine elect ron ics. Have
the malfunction corrected as soon as pos­
sible by you r autho rized Aud i dea le r o r
qua lified workshop .
J;. ID Electronic stabilization program
(ESP)
If the Jjj indicator lamp blinks while dr iv ing,
the ESP or ASR (Ant i- Slip Regulation) is active ­
ly regulating .
If the
D] i ndicator lamp ill uminates, the sys­
tem has switched the ESP off. I n this case, you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESP on again . The system is func- tion
ing comp lete ly when the indicator lamp
switches off.
If t he I ind icator lamp illum inates, the ESP
was switched off w ith the
I~ O FF I button.
Stabili sation program and ABS fault ! See
owner' s manual
If the Ii] indicator lamp a nd the ti] ABS indi­
cator lamp illum inate and the driver message
appears, the ABS or electro nic different ia l lock
is malfunct io ni ng . This a lso inte rrupts the
E S P. The brakes s till function with their nor­
mal power, but ABS is not active.
D rive to your author ized A udi dealer immedi­
ate ly to have the ma lfunction corrected .

T he I (USA mode ls)/ . (Canada mode ls) i n­
di ca tor light mon itors the safety systems e .g.
airbags, pretens ione rs and illuminates fo r a
f ew seconds each time you switch the ignit ion
on .
If the I (USA models) /. (Canada models)
indica to r ligh t does not go o ut, or if it ill umi ­
na tes while you are driving, o r if i t starts to
blink, then there is a malfunction somewhe re
in the system. If the light does not i lluminate
when you switch the ign ition on, th is also
means there is a malfunct ion.
_&. WARNING
If you have a ma lfunction in the safety sys­
tems, contact your authorized Audi dea ler
immediately . Othe rwise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an ac ci­
d ent.

(l) Tire pressure monitoring system -
telltale indicator lamp
A ppl ies to vehicles: with tire pressure monit oring sys te m
The warning/indicator light appears in the
event of a significant loss of air pressure.
The ti) warning/ind icator light illuminates for
a few seconds after the ignit ion is turned on
as function check, and then goes out.
If the
(g symbol appears, pressure is too low
in at least one tire.
When the system detects a ma lfunction, the
warning/indicator light will flash for approx i­
mately one minute and then remain continu­
ously illum inated. Th is sequence will continue
upon subsequent vehicle starts up as long as
the ma lfunction ex ists. Contact your author­
ized Audi dealer and have the malfunction
corrected .

¢i 9 Turn signals
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal .
Whenever you use the left B or the right II
turn signal, the indicator light blinks. When
you use the emergency flashers , both indica­
tor lights flash .
If one of the turn signal light bulbs burn out,
the turn signal will blink tw ice as fast as nor­
mal.
~ Safety belts
This warning/indicator light reminds you to
put on your safety belt.
The . warning/ indicator light illum inates
when the ignition is switched on to remind
the dr iver and (on USA models only) any front
passenger to put on the safety belt. Add ition­
a lly, an audible warning tone will a lso sound.

o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Ma lfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is part
of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The
fcj symbol lights up when the ign ition is
turned on and will turn off after the engine
has started and has settled at a constant idle
speed. This indicates that the MIL is work ing
proper ly.
The warning light illuminates when there is a
malfunction in the engine electronic system.
Contact your authorized Audi dea ler and have
the malfunction corrected.

The II warning/indicator light illuminates
when the high beams are on or when you use
the headlight flasher. For more information
about using the high beams, see
c::> poge 52.
CRUISE/ (,)" Cruise control
Them! (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
warning/indicator light illuminates when the
cruise control is activated .
ABS/ (9) Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warn ing/indicator light r4iS (USA mod­
els)!Ei] (Canada models) will come on for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on.
T he light will go out after an automatic check
sequence is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not i llum i­
nate when you switch on the ignition .
- The warning/indicator light does not go out
after a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator light illuminates
while driving.
The brake system will still respond even
without the assistance of the ABS system.

The warning/indicator light monitors the
elec tromechanical parking brake.

nates . After the ignition has been t urne d off,
the wa rn ing/ indicato r light cont inues to ill u­
minate for about 30 seconds . If the parking
brake is applied w ith the ign ition t urned off,
the war ning/ indicato r light illum inates for
abo ut 30 seconds .
The wa rning/indicator light wi ll go out when
the pa rking bra ke is re leased .
If the warning/indicator light flas hes continu­
o us ly
after applying the parking bra ke, brak ­
ing fo rce is not s uff icient to prevent the vehi­
cle from rolling unintentionally . Please note
the followi ng:
- If the slo pe of the ground is too steep to
park the vehicle, the addit ional drive mes­
sage appea rs

- In the eve nt of a pa rking bra ke malfunction,
the yellow

BRAKE/ CQ)) Brake system
The warning/indicator light flashes if brake
fluid level is low, if there is an ABS system
malfunction or a parking brake malfunction.
The 1111 (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
light illuminates when the ign ition is turned
on .
It goes out after the engine has been
started. This indicates t hat the brake war ning
light is funct ion ing properly.
If th e br ake w ar ning light d oes not light up
w hen the engin e is c ranking , th ere ma y be a
ma lfun cti on in th e ele ctric al sys tem. In thi s
case, c ontact an auth oriz ed Audi d eale r.
If the brake system warning/ind icator light
flashes, there is a brake system malfunction .

the m warning light come on to ­
gether, the rear wheels could lock up
first under hard braking . Rear wheel lock ­
up can cause loss of vehicle control and
an acc ident. Have your vehicle repaired
immediately by your authorized Audi
dealer or a qualified workshop . Dr ive
slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake ap·
plicat ions.
- Canada models: If the brake warn ing
light . and the ABS warning light

come on together, the rear wheels could
.
lock up first under hard braking . Rear
wheel lock-up can cause loss of vehicle
control and an accident . Have your vehi­
cle repaired immed iately by your author·
ized Audi dealer or a qualified workshop .
Drive s low ly and avoid sudden, hard
brake applications.
- If the brake warning/ind icator light does
not go ou t after a few seconds and the
pa rking brake released, or lights up wh ile
you are driv ing, the fluid level in the
brake fluid reservoir is too low. If yo u be ­
lieve that it is safe to do so, proceed im­
mediately at low speed to the nearest
author ized Audi dealer or qualif ied repair
facility and have the brake system in·
spected.
- Always keep in mind that after severa l
brake applications, you will need greater
pressure on the brake pedal to stop your
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with max imum stopping power
in critical s ituations. You must allow fo r
increased braking dis tances. The extra
distance used up by fading brakes could
lead to an accident.

If there is no gearshift recommendation, then
just drive in the appropriate gear for conserv­
ing fuel.
@ Tips
-This indicator can help you conserve fuel.
This indicator is not meant to show you
which gear you should a lways be in in all
driving situations. Sometimes, in s itua­
tions such as passing, driving through mountains or when towing a trailer,
there won't be any gearsh ift recommen­
dat ion.
- The display does not light up when the
clutch pedal is be ing depressed .
Digital speedometer

Current speed appears in the display . Speed is
shown in 1 mph increments (USA models) or 1
km/h increments (Canada models) .
You can switch the display from miles to kilo­ meters and vice versa via the MMI*.
Open door or trunk lid warning
The pictogram alerts you when doors or the
trunk lid have been le~ open.

As soon as the door, the hood and the trunk
lid are closed properly, the door and trunk lid
warning turns off and the selected driver in­
formation system functions are displayed
again.
Service interval display
The service interval display reminds you when
your next service is due .

The schedule for the next oil change or inspec­
t ion is calculated automatically and d isp layed
accord ingly. The d isp lay works in two stages:
Service reminder
30 days before the next service is due, a serv ­
i ce reminder appears in the display when you
turn on the ignition

After about 5 seconds the display switches
back to normal. The distance and time re­
main ing are updated each time the ignit ion is
turned on until the date due for serv ice is
reached.
Service due
When the due date for service is reached, the
message
Service due! appears in the instru ­
ment cluster immed iately after you turn on
the ignition. Addit ionally, a warning tone
sounds. After about 5 seconds the disp lay
switches back to normal.

In o rder to make an accu rate diagnosis, the
stored data can only be displayed using spe­
cial diagnostic eq uipment (gener ic scan tool
for OBD).
I n o rder to connect the special diagnostic
equipment, push the plug into the Data Link
Connector (DLC) . The DLC is located to the
right of the hood re lease

shop can interpret the code and perform the necessary repa ir.
Electronic speed
limiter
Your veh icle may be factory equipped with
tires that are rated for a maximum speed of
130 mph (210 km/h) . Th is is less than the
maximum speed of you r vehicle. To reduce the
ri sk of s udden tire failure and loss of control if
t he veh icle is ope rated at excessive speeds,
your vehicle also has an electronic speed lim it ­
er . The electronic speed limiter prevents yo ur
ve hicle from going faster than the tire speed
rating. For more informat ion

If the engine contro l unit receives fa ulty vehi ­
cle road speed signals, the Malfunction Indi­
cator Lamp (MIL)
¢1111ij) will i llum inate. If t his
occ urs, contact the nearest authorized Aud i
dealer for assistance.
A WARNING
Always observe the posted speed limits
and ad just you r speed to suit p revailing
road, t raff ic and weather conditions. Never
drive your vehicle faster than the maxi­
mum speed rating of the tires insta lled.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system wa rns if the driver
exceeds a prev iously stored maxim um speed.
A warning tone will sound as soon as the vehi-

cle speed exceeds the set speed by about
3 mph (3 km/h). At the same time, a warning
symbol appears in the display. The symbo l's
appearance might be different in some mod­
els.
The speed warning system has two warning
thresholds that funct ion independent ly of
each other and that have somewhat different purposes:
Speed warning 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set the maxi­
mum speed while you are driving. This setting
will remain in effect until yo u turn off the ign i­
tion, assuming that you have not changed or reset the setting.
The . (USA mode ls)/ . (Canada models)
speed warning symbo l in the warning 1 dis­
play appears when you exceed the maximum
speed . It goes out when the speed falls be low
the stored maximum speed .
The speed warning symbol will also go o ut if
the speed exceeds the stored maximum speed
by more than about 2S mph (40 km/h) for at
least 10 seconds . The stored max imum speed
is deleted.
Speed w arning 2
Storing warning 2 is recommended if yo u al­
ways want to be reminded of a certain speed,
for example whe n you are trave ling in a coun­
try that has a genera l maximum speed limit,
o r i f you do not want to exceed a specified
speed for wi nte r tir es.
The . (USA models) . (Canada models)
speed warning 2 symbol appears in the dis ­
play when yo u exceed the sto red speed limit.
Unlik e warning 1, it will not go out unt il the
vehicle speed drops below the s to red speed
li mi t.

Speed warning 2: setting a speed limit
The radio or MMI* control unit is used to set ,
change or delete warning threshold 2 .

Warning th resho ld 2 can be set in the speed
range starting from 20 mph to 150 mph (30 k
m/ h to 2 40 km/h) . Sett ings can each be ad ­
ju ste d in interva ls of 6 mph ( 10 km/h) .
Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Au to-Check contro l mon itors th e funct ion
of cer ta in vehicle feat ures an d co mpo nen ts.
It
simp ly m ake s su re these fe atures an d compo ­
nents are working prope rly. The Auto -Check
control works as long a s the ig nition is o n, as
well as whenever the vehicle is drive n.
If a component is mal funct io ni ng o r if the
need f or an urge nt repa ir ha s been de te cted,
t hi s w ill ap pea r in the i nstr ument cluster d is­
play . You w ill also hear an a udible warning
tone. The displays are color coded in e ither
red or yellow depend ing on their leve l of p rior­
ity .
A red symbol means Danger , a yellow symbo l
indicates
Warn ing . In certain situat ions, in ­
format ion message for the driver appear in
addition to the red and ye llow symbols .
Function test: automat ic transmis sion*
The Auto- Check Contro l w ill automatically
perfo rm a test each t ime yo u sw itch on t he ig­
nition. With the selecto r leve r in
P or N , the
follow ing message appears in the d isplay:
When stationary apply foot brake while se­
lecting gear.
When yo u a selec t a differen t ge ar (for ex am ­
ple:
R , D , etc .), the message will disa ppear
and the A uto -Check f unctio n is displayed .
If there is a mal fun ct ion, then the ma lfu nc­
ti on me ssa ge will appear abou t 15 se co nds a f­
te r yo u st art the vehi cle. A t the same time you
will hear a warning tone.

Driver information messages
Driver information messages are shown in the
instrument cluster display in addition to sym­
bols.

For example, if the transmission selector lever
is not in the
P position when the engine is
turned
off, the following message appears:
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock
if lever is not in P.
The ignition key can on ly be removed with the
selector in this position. This and other mes­
sages are brought up if a function cannot be
carried out.
Driver messages and red symbols
If a red symbol appears in the display, a dr iver
message is a lso displayed automatica lly.
For example, the. symbol for a problem
with engine oil pressure appears in the dis­
play . The message :
Switch off engine and check oil level
The driver message in the display goes out af­
ter about
5 seconds . The driver message can
be disp layed again by brief ly pressing the
ISETI button i=> fig. 25.
Driver messages and yellow symbols
If a ye llow symbo l appears in the disp lay, a
driver message is also displayed automatica l­
l y.
F or example,
thi- 1-1 symbol appears in the
disp lay, ind icating low windshield washer flu­
id level. The following message also appears:

1 malfunction, a red symbol
appears in the uppe r center area of the dis­
play c>
fig. 26 . A driver message appears as
well to explain the ma lfunction in more de­
tail. When this symbol appears,
three warning
tones sound in succession . Th e symbol contin­
ues to flas h until the fault has been corrected.
If
several priority 1 malfunct ions are present,
the symbols appear in succession and remain
for about
2 seconds.
The driver wa rning goes out after about
5 sec­
onds, but it can be brought up again at any
time by pressing the
