- If the brake system indicator light does not
t u rn off or it t urns on while driv ing, the
brake fluid level in the reservoir is too low,
and this increases the risk of an acc ident.
Stop the vehicle a nd do not cont inue dr iv­
ing . See an author ized Audi dealer or au­
t h orized Aud i Serv ice Faci lity fo r ass ista nce.
- If the brake system ind icator light turns on
toget he r with the ABS and ESC ind icator
l ights, the ABS/ ESC regulat ing func tion may
be m alfu nctioning. Fu nctions t hat stabilize
the vehi cle are no longer ava ilable . This
cou ld cause the ve hicle to swerve, whic h in ­
creases the risk that t he ve hicle wi ll slide.
Do not continue driving. See an author ized
Audi dealer or author ized Audi Service Fac ili­
ty for assistance .
PARK/(®) Electromechanical parking brake
If the -(USA models) / . (Canada models)

set .

lfthe indicator light blinks and the message ap­
pears, the re is not enough brak ing power to se­
cure the vehicle . The brakes have overhea ted. The
ve hicle could roll away even on a small incline .

There is a malfunction in the park ing brake . Dr ive

Serv ice Faci lity immediately to have t he malfunc­
tion corrected.

_ L Cooling system
• Turn off engine and ch eck coolant l evel
The coolant level is too low .
Do not continue dr iving and switch t he engine
off. Check the coolant level

- If the coo lant level is too low, add coolant
r:!) page 2 78. Only continue driving once the in­
dicator light turns off.
• Coolant temperature too high! Ple ase let en­
gine run with vehicle stationar y
Let the engine ru n at idle fo r a few mi nutes to
cool off, until t he ind icator lig ht tur ns off .
-If the ind icator light does not turn off, do not
cont inue driving the veh icle . See an author ized
Aud i dea le r or aut horized Audi Serv ice Facility
for assis tance.
.&_ WARNING
- N ever ope n the hood if you ca n see or he ar
steam or coo la nt escaping from t he engine
compa rtment. This increases the risk of
burns. Wait until you no longer see o r hear
steam or coolant escaping.
- The engine compartment in any vehicle can
be a dange rous a rea. Stop the engine and
allow it to cool before working i n the engine
compa rtment. Always follow the informa­
tion fo und in
c> page 272.

Do not continue driv ing if the . indicator
li ght turns on as this increases the risk of en­
g ine damage.

and front passenge r's safety belts are faste ned .

On -Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics moni tors the components
of your emission control system . Each monitored
component in your eng ine system has bee n as­
signed a code . In case of a ma lfunction, the com­
ponent w ill be identified and the fa ult stored as a
code in t he control module memo ry.
The MI L light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery system .
I f t he lig ht ill uminates af ter a ref uel ing, stop the
ve hicle and ma ke sure the fue l filler cap is p rop ­
erly closed

In order to make an accurate d iagnosis, the stor­
ed data can on ly be disp layed using specia l diag­
nos tic eq uipment (gene ric sc an tool for OBD).
In order to connect t he specia l diagnostic equip­
ment , push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(D LC). The D LC is located to the rig ht of t he hood
release
c> fig. 19.
Your author ized Audi dealer or a qualified service
s tat ion can interpret the code and perform the
necessa ry repa ir.
A WARNING
Do not use t he di agno stic con nector for pe r­
sonal use . Incorrect usag e c an cause ma lfu nc­
tions, which can increase the ris k of a colli­
sion !
Electronic speed limiter
-
Your veh icle may be factory equipped with ti res
that are rated for a maxim um speed of 130 mph
(210 km/h) . This is less than the maximum speed
of your vehicle . To reduce t he risk of sudden tire

failure and loss of contro l if the vehicle is operat ­
ed at excessive speeds, your vehicle also has an
e lectronic speed limite r. The elect ronic speed
li miter prevents your ve hicle from go ing faster
th an the tire speed rat ing . For more information

If the engine cont rol un it rece ives fa ulty vehicle
speed s ignals, the Ma lf u nction Indicator Lamp
( M IL)

Your vehicle's top speed is electronically lim ited
to 155 mph (250 km/h).
If the engine control unit receives fa ulty vehicle

-To reduce the risk of an accident, never se ­
lect the R or P posit ions w hile d riving.
- Power is sti ll transmitted to the w heels
when the eng ine is r unning at idle. To pre­
vent the veh icle from "creeping", you must
keep your foot on the brake i n all se lector
lever posi tions (except P and N) when the
eng ine is ru nning. Do not inadvertent ly
press the acce le ra to r pedal whe n the veh icle
is sta tionary. Oth e rw ise the vehicle will s tart
to move immed iate ly, even if t he pa rking
bra ke is set . This could r esult in a crash.
- B efore open ing the hood, se lect t he P s ele c­
to r leve r pos it ion and se t the pa rk ing br ake.

ping on steep

and the vehicle will start movi ng once you press
the accelerator pedal.
Stopping /par king
If the selector lever is not in the P position when
you open the driver's door, the vehicle cou ld roll.

Under certain conditions, such as driving in the
mountains or when towing a trai ler, it may be
helpful to switch to manual mode temporar ily
and shift manually to adapt to the drivi ng cond i­
tions ¢ page 86 .
On hills, activate the park ing brake first and then
shift into the P
position ¢ page 81 . This prevents
too much stress from being p laced on the lock ing
mechan ism .

- The vehicle can roll even if t he ignit ion is
sw itche d off .
- D o not press the acce le rato r peda l when
cha ng ing the se lec to r lever posi tion while
t he ve hicle is s ta ti onary and the engi ne is
r u nning . This could result in a crash.

- Othe r components in the electronic h igh-
voltage ignition system
- If you must check o r perform work on the
engi ne while it is run ning:
- Set the parking bra ke and p lace the se lec­
tor lever in the P (pa rk) position first .
-Always p roceed with extreme ca utio n so
that clothing, jewelry or long ha ir do not
become caught in the radiator fan, fan
belt or other moving components or do
not come into contact with hot compo­
nents . Tie back long ha ir before beginning
work and do not wear cloth ing that can
hang down into the engine .
- L imit your exposure to exhaust a nd chemi ­
