cr itica l for a lane change even if it is still some­
what far away. The faste r a ve hicle app roaches,
the soo ner the display in the exterio r mirror w ill
turn on.

© Vehicles you are passing
If you s low ly pass a vehi cle that s ide assist has
de tected (the difference in speed between t he
vehicle and you r vehicle is less than app roximate­
ly 9 mph ( 15 km/h)), the disp lay in the exterior
mirror turns on as soon as the vehicle enters you r
blind spot.
T he disp lay w ill not turn on if you quickly pass a
vehicle that side assist has detected (the differ­ ence in speed is greater than approximate ly 9
mph (15 km/h)) .
Functional limitat ions
T he radar sensors are des igned to de tec t t he lef t
and right adjacent lanes when the road lanes are
the normal width . In some situations, the display
in the exte rior mirror may turn on even though
there is no veh icle located in the area that is criti­
ca l for a lane change. For example :
- If the lanes are narrow or if you are dr iving on
the edge of your lane. If t his is the case, the
system may have detected a vehicle in another
lane that is
not adjacent to your current lane .
- If you are d riving through a curve . Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is in the same lane
or one lane over from the adjacent lane .
- If side assist reacts to other objects (such as
roads ide str uctures like guard rails).
- In poor weather conditions. The side assist
functions are limited.
Do not cover the radar sensors

stickers, deposits, bicycle wheels or other ob ­
jects, because t his w ill impair the funct io n. Do
not use s ide ass ist when towing a trai ler. For in­

A WARNING
--Always pay attention to traffic and to the
area around your vehicle. S ide assist cannot
replace a driver's atte ntion. The driver alone

Night vision assist
Description
Applies to: vehicles with night vision assist
The night vision assist can detect, highlight and,
if necessary, warn about pedestrians and large
wild animals.
N ight vision assist he lps yo u when it is dark by
u sing an infra red camera to mon itor the area in
front of your ve hicle, w ith in the limits of the sys­
tem . It ca n disp lay objects up to a distance of ap­
prox ima tely 1 000 feet (300 m). The thermal im ­
age de te cte d by t he came ra is show n in t he in ­
str ument cluster disp lay . Wa rm areas appear
li ghter and co ld areas a ppear da rker.

Air suspension *
The air suspension* is an electronically-control­
l ed air suspension and damping sys tem . The ad ­
justment depends on the driving mode selected, steering movements, the driver's braking and ac­
celerat ion, and as the road surface, vehicle speed
and load. The veh icle ground clearance depends
on the mode selected and the speed.
The ground clearance increases s ignificantly
when the vehicle is in the
All road mode . At
speeds from approximate ly 50 mph (80 km/h) to
75 mph (120 km/h), the ground clearance re­
duces in stages . When the speed decreases, the
g round clea rance increases again a utomat ically.
The ground clearance is the lowest in
Dynamic
mode.
Steering
The power steering adapts. Ind irect steer ing that
moves easily as in
Comfort mode is especia lly
suited to long drives on highways. The
Dynam ic
mode provides sporty, direct steering.
All-wheel steer ing*
All-wheel steer ing increases dr iving comfort by
providing add it ional steering ability at the rear
axle. Steer ing in the opposite d irection at low
speeds dec reases the turning rad ius. Steering in
the same d irect io n a t high speeds imp roves the
r e sponse t ime whi le increas ing dr iv ing stab ility at
the same time .
Sport differential*
As a componen t of the all wheel d rive system
(quattro)
~ page 146, the sport diffe rential dis­
tr ib utes the dr iv ing power to the rear ax le de­
pending on the situa tion. The dis tribution of
power var ies dependi ng on the selected mode
from moderate
(Comfort ) to sporty (Dynamic ).
The goa l is a high level of agility and ability to ac ­
celerate on curves . The veh icle is very responsive
to steer ing.
Adaptive cruise control (ACC)*
The behavior when accelerating can be adjusted
from comfortab le to sporty, depending on the
drive select mode . Adaptive cru ise control a lso

responds to the driv ing behavior of the vehicle
ahead in a more conservative or sporty manner.
Engine sound*
T he eng ine sound adap ts to the c urren t mode
and can be subtle to sporty .

-Make sure there is enough clearance above
and below the vehicle when pa rk ing. The
height of the ve hicle (gro und clea rance) can
change once it is par ked due to temperature
fluctuations, changes to the load conditions
and changes to the dr iving modes.
- When transporting the vehicle on a car car ­
r ier, train, ship or by other means, o nly tie
the vehicle down at the runn ing s urface of
the ti res, which is the outer c ircumference.
Sec uring the vehicle at the axle compo­
ne nts , sus pension str uts o r towing eyes is
no t pe rm itted because the pres sure in the
air suspens ion s truts ca n change d uring
tr anspo rt . The ve hicle may not be secu red
sufficiently if this ha ppens.

General information

Depending on your vehicle 's equipment , various
parking aids will help you when parking and ma­
ne uvering.

-Always look for t raff ic and check the area
around your vehicle by looking at it direct ly
as well. The parking system cannot replace
the driver's attention . The driver is always
responsib le when entering or leaving a park­
ing space and during similar maneuvers.
- Please note that some surfaces, such as
clothing, are not detected by the system.
-
-Sensors and cameras have blind spots in
which people and objects cannot be detect­
ed . Be especially caut ious of small children
and animals.
- Always keep your eyes on the vehicle 's sur­
round ings, using the rearview mirror as
well.
- The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the radiator gr ille, bumper,
wheel housing and the underbody . The park ­
ing system may be impa ired as a result .
Have a n author ized Audi dealer or author-

ized Audi Service Facility check their func ­
tion .
@ Note
-Some objects are not detected or disp layed
by the system under certain circumstances:
- objects such as barrier chains, trailer draw
bars, vertical poles or fences
- objects above the sensors such as wall ex­
tensions
- objects with certain surfaces or structures
such as cha in link fences or powder snow
- If you continue driving closer to a low ob­
ject, it may disappear from the sensor range . Note that you will no longer be
warned about th is obstacle .
- Keep enough distance from the curb to re­
duce the risk of damage to the rims .
(D Tips
-The system may provide a warning even
though there are no obstacles in the cover­
age area in some situations, such as :
- certa in road s urfaces or whe n the re is tall
grass
- externa l ult rasonic sources such as from
cleaning vehicles
- in heavy rain, snow, or th ick vehicle ex­
ha ust
- We recommend that you practice par king in
a traffic -free location o r parking lot to be­
come familiar with the system . When doing
this, there shou ld be good light and weath­
er conditions.
- You can change the vo lume of the signa ls
and the display ¢
page 140.
-Please refer to the instructions for towing a
trai ler located in

-What appea rs in the infotainment d isplay is
somewhat time -de layed.
- T he sensors m ust be kept clean and free of
snow and ice for the parking aid to operate .

-If a tire pressure of 29 psi (200 kPA) cannot
reached after inflating for 6 minutes, then
the tire is too severely damaged. Do not
continue driving .
- If the t ire cannot be repaired with the tire
sealant, see an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Aud i Serv ice Facility for ass istance .
(D Tips
Do not operate the compressor for more than
six m inutes continuously, or it can overheat.
Once the compressor has cooled, you ca n con­
tinue to use it .
Completing
"'Adhere the sticker that says "max . SO mph
(max. 80 km/h)" that is p rovided w it h the t ire
mobility kit within the dr ive r's fie ld of vision.
"' Stop the vehicle afte r driving for about 10 m i­
nutes and check the tire pressure .
"' If the tire pressure is lower than 19 psi ( 130
kPA), then the tire is too severely damaged. Do
not cont inue driving.
A WARNING
Pay attent ion to the following after repair ing
the t ire :
- Do not drive faster than SO mph (80 km/h).
- Avoid hard acceleration, brak ing sharply,
and fast cornering.
- The vehicle may become more difficu lt to
contro l.
- If the tire is too severely damaged, see an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility for assistance.
@ For the sake of the environment
You can give the used tire sealant bottle to an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility for disposal.
(D Tips
Remember to obtain a new bottle of sea lant
from an authorized Audi dea ler or authorized
Audi Service Facility after repairing a tire.

steep hill or offroad, you must take extra pre ­
cautions to prevent the vehicle from rolling .
Use su itable objects to block the front and
back of t he wheel t hat is diagonal from the
whee l with the flat t ire.
A WARNING
You o r yo ur passenge rs could be injured while
changing a whee l if you do no t follow these
safety precautions :
- I f yo u have a flat tire, move a safe dis tance
off the road. Turn off the eng ine, turn the
emergency flashers on and use other warn ­
ing devices to a lert other motorists.
- Make sure that passengers wait in a safe place away from the vehicle and well away
from the road and traff ic.
- To he lp prevent the vehicle from moving
suddenly and possib ly slipping off the jack*,
a lways f ully set the park ing brake and block
the front and back of the wheel diagonally
opposite the wheel being changed. When
one front wheel is lifted off the ground,

Emergency situations
General
This chapter is intended for trained emergency
crews and working personnel who have the nec­
essary tools and equipment to perform these
operations.
Starting by pushing or
towing
~ Note
Vehicles with an automatic transmission
cannot be started by pushing or towing.
Starting with jumper
cables
If necessary , the engine can be started by con­
necting it to the battery of another vehicle.
If the engine should fail to start because of a dis­
charged or weak battery, the battery can be con­
nected to the battery of
another vehicle, using a
pair of jumper cables to start the engine.
Jumper cables
Use only jumper cables of sufficiently large cross
section
to carry the starter current safely. Refer
to the manufacturer's specifications.
Use only jumper cables with
insulated terminal
clamps which are distinctly marked :
plus(+) cable in most cases colored red
minus(-) cable
in most cases colored black.
A WARNING -
Batteries contain electricity, acid, and gas.
Any of these can cause very serious or fatal in­
jury. Follow the instructions below for safe
handling of your vehicle's battery.
-Always shield your eyes and avoid leaning
over the battery whenever possible.
- A dead battery can freeze at temperatures
around 32 °F (0 °C) . If the vehicle battery is
frozen, you must thaw it before connecting
the jump start cables. If you do not, this in-

creases the risk of an explosion and chemi­
cal burns. After jump starting the vehicle,
drive to an authorized Audi dealer or author­
ized Audi Service Facility immediately to
have the vehicle battery checked.
- Do not allow battery acid to contact eyes or
skin . Flush any contacted area with water
immediately.
- Improper use of a booster battery to start a
vehicle may cause an explosion .
- Vehicle batteries generate explosive gases .
Keep sparks, flame and lighted cigarettes
away from batteries.
- Do not try to jump start any vehicle with a
low acid level in the battery .
- The voltage of the booster battery must also
have a 12-Volt rating . The capacity (Ah) of
the booster battery should not be lower
than that of the discharged battery. Use of
batteries of different voltage or substantial­
ly different "Ah " rating may cause an explo­
sion and personal injury.
- Never charge a frozen battery. Gas trapped
in the ice may cause an explosion.
- Never charge or use a battery that has been
frozen. The battery case may have be weak­
ened.
- Use of batteries of different voltage or sub­
stantially different capacity (Ah) rating may
cause an explosion and injury. The capacity
(Ah) of the booster battery should not be
lower than that of the discharged battery.
- Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, always read and heed all
WARNINGS
c>page 319.
@ Note
-Applying a higher voltage booster battery
will cause expensive damage to sensitive
electronic components, such as control
units, relays, radio, etc.
- There must be no electrical contact between
the vehicles as otherwise current could al­
ready start to flow as soon as the positive
( + ) terminals are connected.

-When connecting jumper cables, make sure
that they cannot get ca ught in any mov ing
parts in the engine compartment.
- Do not bend over the batteries - danger of
chem ica l burns!
- The battery cell lock ing screws must be
t ightened sec ure ly.
- Be fore you check anything in the e ngine
compartment, a lways read and hee d all

The fo llow ing information is to be used by com ­
mercia l tow tr uck operators who know how to op-

-Never wrap the safety chains or winch cables
around the brake lines .
- To prevent unnecessa ry damage , your Audi
must be transported with a flatbed truck.
- To load the vehicle on to the flatbed, use the
towing loop found in the vehicle tools and at­
tach to the front or rear anchorage

A WARNING
-A veh icle being towed is not safe for passen-
ge rs. Neve r allow anyone to ride in a vehicle
b eing towed, fo r any r eason.

Vehicles with a trailer hitch*
"' Attach the towing bar or the towing cable to
the trailer hitch.
Vehicles with a factory-installed trailer hitch* are
not equipped with towing loop threads at the
r ear.

If the towing loop is not tightened until it
stops when installing, the threads may be
pulled out when towing the vehicle and that
could cause an accident.
A WARNING
Applies to: vehicles with trailer hitch
-Only use a special towing bar to prevent
damaging the ball hitch. These towing bars
have been specially designed for trailer tow­
ing h itches.
- Only use special towing cables.
