- When swit ching the ignition o n, the need les
i n the instrument clus ter swi ng upward
b rief ly .
- The ill umination for the inst rument cluste r
li ghts up whenever you switch on the igni­
tion with the
vehicle headlights off . As the
day light fades, the instrument cluster illu­
mination likewise d ims automatically and
will go out completely whe n the o utside
li ght is very low. This feature is meant to re­
mind you to swi tch on the headlights when
outside light con ditions become poor.

Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge ¢ page 10, fig. 3 CD
only works when t he ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the follow­
ing important points :
Engine cold
If the needle is at or close to the bottom o f the
gauge, the engine has not yet reached its operat ­
i ng temperature. Avo id h igh engine speeds,
heavy engine loads, and heavy thrott le applica­
tions .
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operating tem­
perature, the needle will move to the middle of
the ga uge and rema in there. I f the engine is
working hard at hig h outs ide temperatures, t he
needle may move higher on the gauge. This is not
a cause for concern as long as the. warning
li ght i n the inst rumen t cluste r display does no t il­
l u m inat e. If the . warning lig ht in the inst ru­
ment cluster d isp lay flashes, th is can me an one
of two th ings : ei th er the coolan t
temperature is
too h igh, or t he coo lant
level is too low

A WARNING
-Always observe the warning in¢ page 187,
before open ing the hood and check ing the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment. You
cou ld burn yourself. Let the eng ine cool off
first so that you cannot hear o r see any
steam o r engine coo lant.
0 Note
- Mount ing additional lights or accesso ries in
fron t of the a ir inlets reduces the cooling ef­
fect of the radia to r. A t high outside temper­
atu res or high e ngine load, the eng ine could
overheat.
- The front spo iler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the veh i­
cle is moving. If the spo iler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author­ ized Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo­
lutions per minutes).
If engine RPM drops be low 1,5 00, you should
downshift to the next lower gea r. T he red area at
the end of the scale indicates max imum permis­
sible eng ine RPM after the break-in period . Be­
fore reachi ng this area, move the selector lever to
position D/S or ease your foot off the accelerator
pedal.

should o nly briefly be in the red zone: you
co uld damage your eng ine! The beginn ing of
the r ed zone varies depending on the engine.

The lsET j button performs the following func­
t ions:

Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system constantly monitors cer­
tain individual functions and components of the
vehicle when the ignition is turned on and when
the vehicle is moving .
With the ign ition turned on, you can start the
"Auto-Check sequence" by pressing the
I SE TI but­
ton. You can perform an Auto-Check sequence
when the vehicle is sta tionary and the ign it ion is
tu rned on o r whe n th e vehicle is moving slowe r
t h an 3 mph (5 km/ h).
In add ition , the number of keys init ia lised for
your vehicle is disp layed .
L2 3/3 means that
th ree keys have be en initialised. This feature ena­
bles used car buye rs to make sure they have r e­
c e ived all of the keys.
If you are g iven only two keys, for instance, you
should take the vehicle and the existing keys to
an a utho rized Aud i dea le r to have the miss ing key
disabled.
It i s also important to no tify your insur­
ance company abo ut the loss.
Setting the sp eed warning
By pressi ng the !SET ! button briefly, you can set
th reshold 1 of the speed wa rn ing while you are
dr iv ing ¢page 78. By ma intai ning pressure on

Indicator lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or mal­
functions¢ &.
Messages may appear with some indicator lights .
A warning signal will sound at the same time.
The messages disappear again after a short time.
To display a message again, press the
I SE TI but­
ton ¢
page 11. If several malfunctions occur,
each of the indicator/warning lamps will be dis­
p layed in succession for about two seconds at a
time.
Some indicators lights in the display can turn on
in several colors.
8_ WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other im­
portant vehicle information may resu lt in
serious personal injury or vehicle damage.
- Whenever sta lled or stopped for repa ir,
move the vehicle a safe distance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the emer­
gency flasher¢
page 45.
- The engine compartment of any motor vehi­
cle is a potentially hazardous area. Before
you check anything in the engine compart­
ment, stop the engine and let it cool down.
Always exercise extreme caution when work­
ing under the hood¢

Some indicator lights turn on briefly to check the
function of that system when you switch the igni­
tion on . These systems are marked with a./ in
the following tables .
If one of these indicator
lights does not turn on, there is a malfunction in
that system.

If the brake warning light doe s not light up
when the engine is cranking, there may be a malfunction in the electrical system . In this
case , contact your authorized Audi dealer.

- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety haz ­
ard. Stop the car and get professional ass is­
tance.
- If the 1111 (USA models) . (Canada mod­
e ls) brake system indicator light turns on to­
gether with t he ABS and ESC ind icator
lig hts, the ABS/ESC regulat ing funct ion may
have fa iled. Functions that stabilize the ve­
h icl e are no longe r available. This co uld
c a use t he ve hicle to swerve and increas e t he
ris k of s liding. Drive carefu lly to the neares t
author ized Audi dealer or other qualified
wo rkshop and have the malf unct ion co rrect ­
ed.
- If the b rake wa rning/in dicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the pa rk­
ing brake is released, or lights up wh ile you
are driving, the fl uid level in the brake f lu id
rese rvoir is too low. If y ou believe t hat it is
safe to do so, proceed immediately at low
speed to the nea rest authorized A udi dealer
or qualified workshop and have t he b rake
sy stem inspec ted.
- Always keep in min d that after s evera l brak e
a pplicat ions, you wi ll n eed gre ate r pr essure
o n th e br ake pe dal t o s to p you r ve hicle . Do
no t rely on st rained bra kes to respond with
maxim um stop ping power i n cr itica l s itua ­
tions . You must a llow for increased braking
d istances. The extra d istance used up by
fading brakes could lead to an accident .

EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the elec­
tronic power control .
The (m warning/indicator light (Electronic Power
Control) i llum inates when yo u switch the ignition
on as a function check.
(D Tips
If this warning/indicator light ill uminates
while you are dr iv ing, then the re is a malfunc­
tion in the eng ine electronics. Have the mal­
fu nction corrected as soon as possible by your
author ized A udi dealer or a qualified repair fa­
cility.
o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfu nction Indicator Lamp (M IL) is part of
the On-Board Diagno stic (OB D II) system . The
symbo l
('4 lights up whe n the ign ition is switch ­
ed on and will turn off afte r th e engine has star t­
ed an d has sett le d at a constant idle speed . This
indicates that the MIL is working proper ly.
The warning ligh t illumina tes when there is a
malfunct ion in the engine e lectronic system .
Contact your authorized A udi dealer and have the
malfunctio n corrected .
An improperly close d fu e l fi ller cap may also
cause the MIL li ght to il lum inate ¢
page 185 .

The engine speed is automatically lim ited to the
speed d isp layed in the dr iver information system.

The eng ine speed limita tion deactivates once the
engine is no longe r in the critical temperature
r ange and you have re leased t he accelerator ped ­
a l once .
I f the engine speed limitation was activated by
an engine contro l ma lf u nction, the indicato r light
(m also turns on. Make sure that the speed does
not g o above the speed disp layed. Dr ive to your
authorized Aud i dea ler immediately to have the
malfunction cor rected .

Introduction
The Driver information display inside the instru­
ment cluster provides you, the driver, with im­
portant information.

Cent er dis play
With the ignition on, the display in the Driver In­
formation System shows the following informa­
tion :
- CD* inserted or Radio * station set
- Outs ide temperature* : At temperatures below
41 °F (+S °C), a snowflake symbol appears in
front of the temperature display¢&. .
- Wa rning if one of the doors, front lid o r engine
compartment lid is not closed.

Auto Che ck Control
Some functions and vehicle components are
scanned for their operati ng status when you
switch the ign ition on and whi le you a re driving.
Malfunctions or required service procedures are
s ignaled audib ly and ind icated by red and yellow
illuminated symbols and rem inders in the dis­
play.
A WARNING
-
- Never rely exclusively on the o utside tem­
perature display to determine if a road sur­
face is icy or not. Keep in mind that road sur­
faces, especially bridges and overpasses, could be ice covered and slippery even at an
outs ide temperature above 41 °F (+5 °C).
- Always remember, even i f the "snowflake"
symbo l (ice warning) does not appea r in the
display, black ice could be on the road.
- Always reduce your speed and drive with
specia l care in cold weather cond itions when
the chance of encountering icy road surfaces
increases.
(D Tips
If the vehicle is stationary, or if you are driv­
i ng at a very low speed, the temperature
shown in the disp lay m ight be slightly higher
than the act ual outs ide temperatu re. This is
caused by the heat being radiated from the
engine.

Evaluating times and continuing or
resetting timing
You can evaluate the fastest, slowest and aver­
age Lap times.

proximately 2 seconds. The number of laps
traveled, the fastest lap"+", the slowest lap"-"
and the average lap time "0" appears in the dis­

... To reset the timer to zero, press and hold the
I RESE T! button again for approximate ly 2 sec­
onds .
... To switch the lap timer off completely, press
the
I RESE T I button briefly.
(D Tips
-Saved lap t imes cannot be ind ividually de­
l eted from the total results.
- The saved lap timer values will not be lost
after turn ing the ignit ion off.
On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢.ij in the
instrument cluster is part of the On-Board Diag­
nostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when the
ignit ion is switched on and goes out after the en­
g ine starts and the idle has stabilized. Th is ind i­
cates that the MIL is working properly.

If the light does not go out after the engine is
started, or i lluminates while you are driving, a
malfunction may exist in the eng ine system. If
the light illuminates, the catalytic converter
could be damaged .
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoiding
sustained high speeds and/or rapid accelerations)
and have the condition corrected. Contact your
authorized Audi dealer.
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate
c::;, page 185.
On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the components
of your emission control system. Each monitored component in your engine system has been as ­
signed a code. In case of a malfunction, the com­ ponent will be identified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory.
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery system.
If the l ight illuminates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop­
erly closed
c::;, page 185.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can only be displayed using special diag­
nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD).
In order to connect the specia l diagnostic equip­
ment, push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC). The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release
c::;, fig . 17 .
Your authorized Audi dealer or qua lified work­
shop can interpret the code and perform the nec- essary repair . .,,_

Warm and cold Climate control system
Description
The climate control system warms, cools and
adds humidity to the a ir in the veh icle inter io r.
It
is the most effect ive when the windows and sun­
roof are closed. If there is a build-up of heat in ­
side the vehicle, ventilation can help to speed up
the cooling process.
I n all heating mode functions except
defrost, the
b lower only switches to a higher speed once the
engine coolant has reached a certain tempera­
ture.
Condensat ion from the cooling system can drip
and form a puddle of water unde r the vehicle.
This is normal and does not mean there is a leak.
Pollutant filter
The pollutant filte r removes pollutants such as
dust and pollen from the ai r.
The air pollutants filter must be changed at the
intervals specified in your Warranty & Mainte­
nance booklet, so that the a ir condit ioner can
properly work.
If you drive your vehicle in an area with high air
pollution, the filter may need to be changed
more frequently than spec ified in your Audi Wa r­
ranty
& Maintenance booklet. If in doubt, ask
your authorized Audi Service Adv isor for advice.
Key coded settings
The climate control settings are automat ically
stored and assigned to the remote control key
that is in use.
_&. WARNING
Reduced visibility is dangerous and can cause
accidents .
- For safe dr iv ing it is very important that all
windows be free of ice, snow and condensa­
tion .
Warm and cold
-Comp letely familiarize yourse lf with the
proper use and funct ion of the heating and
ventilation system and especially how to de­
fog and defrost the windows.
- Never use the windshield wiper/washer sys­
tem in freezing weather until you have
warmed the windshie ld first, using the heat­
ing and vent ilation system. The washer solu­
tion may freeze on the windsh ield and re­
duce visibility.
(D Note
- If you suspect that the air conditioner has been damaged, sw itch the system off to
avoid further damage and have it inspected
by a qualified dealership.
- Repairs to the Audi air conditioner require
special techn ical knowledge and spec ial
tools. Contact an authorized Aud i dealer for
assistance.
@ For the sake of the environment
By reducing the amount of fuel you use, you
also reduce the amount of pollutants emitted
into the air.
(D Tips
- Keep the air intake slots (in front of the
w indshield) free from ice, snow and debris
in order to main tain the proper function of
the climate control system.
- T he energy management system may switch
the seat heating * or rear window defroster
off temporarily. These systems are avai lab le
again as soon as the energy balance has
been restored.
- Air escapes through vents under the rear
window. When placing items of cloth ing on
the luggage compartment cover, ensure
that the openings are not covered.

Switching the ignition on /off
If you would like to sw itch the ignition on with­
out start ing the e ng ine, fo llow these steps:
"' Press the
!START ENGINE STOPI button with -
out pressing the brake pedal.
"'T o sw itch the ignition off, press the but to n
again.
If the engine sho uld not start immed iately, the
starting p rocess is a utomat ically stopped after a
short time. Repeat sta rting procedure.
When starting the engine, major e lectr ica l loads
are sw itched off temporar ily .
After a cold engine is started, there may be a brief period of increased noise because oil pres­
sure must first build up in the hydraulic valve ad­
justers. This is normal and not a cause for con­
cern.
_& WARNING
- Never allow t he engine to ru n in co nfine d
spaces -dange r of asp hyxiation.
- Never turn off the engine unti l the vehicle
h as come to a comp lete stop.
- Always ta ke t he key with yo u w heneve r you
leave your vehi cle. Otherw ise, the eng ine
c ou ld be started or ele ct rical eq uipment
s u ch as the power w indows co uld be operat ­
ed. This can lead to serious injury.
- Never leave ch ild ren o r persons requ iring as­
sistance unattended in the vehicle. The doo rs can be locked using the remote trans­
mitter, preventing peop le from escap ing
from the vehicle on their own in the event of
an emergency. Depending on the time of
year, people inside the vehicle can be ex­
posed to very high o r ve ry low tempe ra-
tu res.
(D Note
- Avoid high eng ine rpm, fu ll throttle and
heavy engine loads until the engine has
r eached operating tempe rat ure - otherwise
you r isk eng ine damage.

Do not let the engine run while pa rked to
warm up. Begin dr iv ing immediately. Th is re­
d uces unnecessary em issions.
(!} Tips
- After starting a col d en gine, t here may be a
br ie f per iod of increased noise because the
oil pressure must first bui ld up in the hy­
draulic valve adjusters. This is norma l and
not a cause for concern.
- If you leave the veh icle with the ignition
switched on, the ig nition w ill switch off af­
ter a ce rtain period of time. Please note that
e lect rical equipment such as exte rior lights
wi ll switch off as well when that happens.
Switching engine off

Steering lock
The steer ing lo cks w hen yo u tur n the eng ine off

I START ENGINE STOP I button a nd open
the d river's doo r. The loc ked steering helps pre­
vent ve hicle theft .
Emergency off
If necessary, the e ngine can be switched off with
the se lec to r lever in the R or D/S posi tions. The
engine s tops if you press a nd ho ld the
I START ENGI NE STOP I button at speeds below
6 mph (10 km/ h) and press the brake peda l.
_& WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop. The full func­
tion of the brake booster and the power
steer ing is not guaranteed. You must use
more force to turn or b rake if necessary. Be­
caus e you cannot stee r and brake as you
usually wo uld, this cou ld lead to crashes
a nd se rio us in juries.
