Follow the requirements set out in the Maintenance Guide.

Use CITROËN-approved products wherever possible.
Capacity: See “Capacities”.
Engine coolant
T h e fl u i d l e v e l s h o u l d b e between the marks MIN. and MAX. on the header tank.
Engine hot, wait at least 15 minutes.
Quality: See “Maintenance Guide”.
Never do anything relating to the cooling system of an engine that is hot.
Poles “+” and “-” for starting with a slave battery (only on V6 HDi engine)
See “Starting with a slave battery”.
Engine oil
Check the engine oil level on horizontal ground with the engine having been switched off for at least 15 min-utes.
Quality: See “Maintenance Guide”.
Pull out the manual dip-stick.
The level should be between the marks MIN.and MAX. on the gauge.
It must never exceed the maximum.

If opening the bonnet when the engine is hot, even if it is stopped and the ignition is switched off, remember that the cooling fan may operate at any moment.
Between routine servicing visits, check the level of engine oil frequently as well as before going on a long journey.

Topping up engine oil

Checking the level and topping up w i t h fl u i d m u s t a l w a y s b e d o n e w i t h the engine cold.
Engine hot
Wait 15 minutes or for the tempera-ture to be lower than 100 and then carefully unscrew the cap so as to allow the pressure to drop, protect-ing yourself with, say, a cloth.
Topping up the coolant
The level of coolant 1 should be between the MIN. and MAX. mark-ings on the header tank.

Protective cover for HDi 138 engines: R e m o v e t h e p r o t e c t i v e c o v e r b y fi r s t u n c l i p p i n g a t 3, then 1 and 4.
Unclip at 2 by pulling towards you, then lift up. T o r e fi t t h e p r o t e c t i v e c o v e r , fi r s t l y c l i p i n a t 2. Lower and centre the cover.Clip in at 3 and 4, pushing vertically and gently from the rear. Clip in at 1pushing vertically.
Protective cover for HDi 110, HDi 173 and V6 HDi engines:Pull the protective cover upwards to remove.

In the event of running out of fuel:
HDi 110, HDi 138 and HDi 173 engines with priming pump A f t e r fi l l i n g ( m i n i m u m 5 l i t r e s ) a n d r e m o v i n g t h e p r o t e c t i v e c o v e r , a c t i o n t h e m a n u a l p r i m i n g p u m p , u n t i l s o m e resistance is felt.
Operate the starter motor while depressing the accelerator pedal slightly until the engine starts. I f t h e e n g i n e f a i l s t o s t a r t a t t h e fi r s t a t t e m p t , w a i t 1 5 s e c o n d s b e f o r e t r y i n g a g a i n .
If the engine fails to start after a few attempts, action the priming pump again and then try to start the engine.
When the engine is idling, accelerate slightly to complete the bleeding of the circuit.
V6 HDi engine with priming pump
After adding fuel, turn the ignition key to position M, wait for a few seconds, then operate the starter motor unti l the engine starts.
If the engine fails to start after several attempts, contact a CITROËN dealer.

Starting the engine after disconnecting and reconnecting the
battery1. Turn the ignition key.2. Wait approximately 1 minute before operating the starter in order to allow the electronic systems to re-initialise.
After the battery has been disconnected for a lengthy period o f time, it may be necessary to re-initialise the following functions:The anti-pinch on the windows.
The parameters of the multifunction display (date, time, language etc).
The Radio stations.The NaviDrive. See NaviDrive instructions.
Starting the engine with an assisting battery (except V6 HDi engine)
If the battery is discharged, it is possible to use either a separate emergency battery or a battery on another vehicle.A. Dischargedbattery (Under the bonnet).B. Assisting battery.
C h e c k t h a t t h e a s s i s t i n g b a t t e r y h a s s u f fi c i e n t v o l t a g e ( 1 2 V ) .
If you use the battery on another vehicle, stop the engine on the latter. The two vehicles must not come into direct contact with each other.
Connect the cables according to the order indicated in the diagram. Check orderthat the leads are well secured (risk of sparks).
Start the engine of the assisting vehicle. Let the engine run for around 1 minute at a slightly accelerated idle.
Operate the starter on the vehicle being assisted.
It is essential to follow the indicated sequence correctly.
